Dogs may well have been a flag contender and be a premiership side if they possessed Buddy in 2008-09 when their side was probably at it's peak. Particularly when a rival in the hawks wouldn't have had his rare talent.

But in another twist for the Dogs picking a 33 y/o Hall in late 2009, was the fact that they had a strong-marking KPF plying his trade at Werribee for years and never went for him. James Podsiadly would have been handy as well i feel for the Dogs, i mean at age 29 now he's probably Geelong's #1 forward.

Tigers though should be pretty happy about Deledio, all the talk late in that 2004 season ws for the 'Deledio Cup'...Franklin and Roughead were barely mentioned. 'Lids was always going to be the #1 pick.

I still wonder to this day, if Geelong didn't kick a profligate 17.21 to the Hawks ultra-efficent 9.4 on that day at Skilled in Rd 22 2004, and say won by just 4 goals more, the Hawks would have finished bottom and have had picks 1 and 4. What would they have done then. Could have changed history i feel.

We should have had at least 3 good players from our first 6 picks. Instead we have one Deledio, only one more still on the list Mcguane (who many feel isn't upto it) and 4 gone. Absolutely shocking.

Find 3 good players taken in the 2004 draft after Pick 7 which we could have taken. You need to cherry pick the players out of that draft.

So other than Adelaide & West Cost, everyone else pretty much struck out after Pick 7.

Just had another look at the draft, and as posted in another thread, it is a very shallow draft, so perhaps I'm being unrealistic.

But we had 6 picks inside 36. We didn't even manage to pick average players. e.g. sherman,slattery,jarred moore,maric or even a monfries! Maybe I ask too much for a better than 16.6% success rate

FWIW, Geelong got Matt Egan with pick 59 or some such that year. Pity he broke his navicular and had to retire at just 25 y/o. Was AA in 2007.

Bit like the 2003 draft though, apart from Cooney there's not too much else of great quality in that, just good-ordinary types like say Sylvia, K.Bradley and co. Brock McLean already looks washed up at age 26, cannot get a game at the Blues now. Some drafts are just proven to be shallow as time goes on, others like 1999, 2001 and 2006 throw up better results. There may be more 'oil' nowadays on what maketh a strong draft before it happens, for the Tigers it was probably an ill-timed occasion to spend up big to get a youngish dual Premiership Crow in Kane Johnson for that season. But in fairness to the Tigers i'm not sure the draft was known to be very good aparta from the obvious top 3 of Judd, ball and Hodge.

Been saying for ages that Lids will spend the second half of his career as a forward who rotates through the middle and wins games off his own boot because of it.

Would easily kick 60 odd goals a year IMO + create another 60 odd.

Continues to be underrated and undervalued by many...

..in '04 we got Jordan Russell with pick 9.. ..he's best 22 for us.. ..otherwise, picked up Adam Hartlett [delisted] with our 2nd pick and Luke Blackwell f/s with our 3rd, [also delisted]..

..we picked up Betts in the pre-season, from memory we were initially after Knobel but you guys took him [and saved us]..

..basically for us we did well with Russell with our first rounder, and bombed til we picked up Betts in the pre-season..

..yeah '03 was another 'shallow' pool to draw from.. ..we got Walker with our PP, and that's about it.. ..funnily enough [not hah hah funny] Brock's now cost 2 1st rounders.. ..pick 5 when drafted, and pick 11 when traded..

judd ball and hodge were 01. incidentally we traded out of that draft which was known by everyone to be a very strong draft indeed, when we traded pick 17 to sydney for an aging greg stafford. 17 ended up with you lot and you used it to get james kelly.

we traded for johnson at the end of 02 we also traded out of pick 28 in 02 for blumfield oh greg miller what a chump. we did this despite finishing 14th with what was an obviously poor list.

to top it all off in 03 we traded picks 6 and 20 for nathan brown. there was very few of us around at that time who insisted the list was aging and crap and that trading out of early picks for these players was wrong.
then like today the over rating of the list kills us.
