I think St Kilda need to be congratulated for giving them a go rather than us looking at what might have been. Elliot looks a talent and with him, Sinclair, Ugle, Fasolo and Edwards likely to all come through together I believe we're well stocked for that position.

One thing I will add though, and it is something I've harped on about a bit, we need to start looking more closely at mature agers. Horsely is doing some very good things with GC and I for one was a little disappointed when we didn't trade for him as a GWS pre-selected player on top of Clarke and Elliot or go with him in the draft for that matter, but you can't have them all.

The best way to get decent mature age players is to get in first and recruit them before they are mature aged. I'd much rather rely on good scouting and develop a kid on our list than wait until everbody can see the VFL form of some 24 year old VFL player and then its an open lottery whether you get him or not.

Marty Clarke is the best mature aged recruit in the AFL this year. By a mile. I really dont understand what people are crapping on about when talking about this mysterious pot of gold called the mature aged player.

He had exposed AFL form and a history with the club so he's separate to the type I'm discussing. I'm more focussing on your Ben Howlett, Hayden Ballentyne, Bernie Vince and Isaac Smith types who hadn't played at AFL level before being drafted on to a senior list.

We've drafted just 2 mature age players that fit that criteria in the past decade in Perham and Maxwell.

FWIW Giles has clearly been better than Clarke as a mature aged recruit this year....

Of course you would like to get them at 18. Unfortunatley for hundreds of reasons this isnt possible. Over the last few years we have seen some very handy players recruited as mature age recruits. Some of them are rough diamonds that need finishing touches to get them to AFL standard but if you can get four or five good years out of a 25 year old thats fantastic. Theres a heap of blokes playing in strong suburban and country leagues that with the right development can go all the way.

....

For every one of them theres a lot more who come through the rookie list... Wellingham Toovey Maccaffer Maxwell O'Brien Blair etc etc etc....and now Keeffe.

Sure if theres a good 25 year old VFL player who can fill a hole it might be worth a punt if you can get in first.. but if you have snared them already when they are 18 and already have your list at a good level then you dont really need to top up. Slowly developing players through the VFL might not sound as sexy as importing in instant ready made ball magnet, but long term its a much better way of developing your list.

Giles was a listed AFL player last year.

How many matches did GWS play at AFL level last year? They were an NEAFL team in 2011 so their players should be treated as such.

All I'm saying is that some players develop at a slower rate than others. Not everyone is mature enough (mentally or physically) to be an AFL footballer at the age of 18-19. And as we sit ATM unless a player is mature by that age or has previously been on an AFL list they have next to no chance of being recruited by Collingwood.

That's not to say we don't seriously look at them but the odds of them coming to the club are slim.

While we are on the subject of mature age recruits, does anybody know why Kris Pendlebury hasn't been drafted?
He's obviously a handy footballer and also has leadership qualities?

Scodog I think Timmywas referring to Giles being on Port's list for 4 years. I think.

IDK but Timmy said he was AFL listed last year and Giles was delisted at the end of 09 by the Power so I doubt he was referring to that.

The reason I know when it was is because I butted heads with a few people on this board when I suggested that we should have delisted Wood and drafted Giles at the end of 2010. After Giles placed in the Magery medal in 2010 playing for Glenelg or Norwood (I think lol) and should have won it... Ah well shit happens.

No, he probably wasn't referring to that.

Giles was AFL listed last year. He was on the GWS list, and while they weren't 'in' the AFL - if you were listed by them, nobody else had access to you.

Same goes for Steve Clifton and a few other guys. (on that note, wonder why he hasn't played yet)

Ok I am mistaken then, thought Giles was still a Port player last year. Regardless he wasnt freely available last year as GWS had him contracted. He has never been "unlisted". Hence Marty Clarke was the best available non listed mature aged player last year. Hence my point stands....we got the best available mid aged non listed player.

No biggie. Witts and Ceglar will pass Giles in time. As far as 2012 is concerned Wood is a better option than Giles.

See ive always been a fan of looking at the players from the lower leagues. In the past year or so guys like Sewell and Horsley have really interested me, as has someone like Callum Sinclair.

I certainly would have looked closely at Horsley, especially considering how sparce our inside midfielder stocks are.

With that in mind im pretty happy with Elliot at the moment, so i guess these mature age players should be considered when looking to fill a void in the best 22... which currently we dont have
