MVP Didaka Award - Round 5 v Essendon

Tough to find 5 players worthy of votes this week.

5: Maynard - kept us in it through 2 and a half quarters of absolute garbage by most of the rest of the team.
4: Daicos - ball use was excellent throughout
3: Grundy - despite the commentators’ ridiculous concerted effort to paint Andrew Phillips as the greatest player in the history of football, Grundy easily and comprehensively beat him.
2: Treloar - made some mistakes but kept getting the ball
1: Pendlebury - was great in the first quarter. Not a particularly good game by his standards but there is literally no one else I can think of that was any good.

5. Maynard
4. Daicos
3. Pendlebury
2. Grundy
1. Stephenson

only the first two really deserve votes.

5. Maynard
4. Daicos

No one else really deserving, so

3. Roughead took a nice mark and was reasonably clean in the wet
2. Scharenberg was okay in his first game back
1. Stephenson only played a couple patches, but at least held some marks and kicked straight

5. Maynard - AA form imo.
4. Grundy - Stunned by the Phillips commentary. The bloke had a bar set by Tom Bellchambers, exceeding that was not hard. He was competitive, but let’s be real, Grundy did as he pleased.
3. Daicos - a shining light, break out year so far
2. Pendlebury - started hot, got shut down but still not many better.
1. Treloar - 30 disposals on return, can’t complain.

The hit outs and clearances tell a story that seems to be happening quite a lot. Hit outs are meaningless if you lose the clearances. Last week, won the hitouts easily and lost the clearances. Clearances from stoppages have been consistently bad for a while. I would argue that if we could manage to win half of them then we would win games.

5. Maynard (Responded well after not his best performance last week)
4. Daicos (Creative, smart, elite skills. Becoming a joy to watch)
3. Grundy (Did as he pleased, despite not having his usual impact)
2. Scharenberg (Solid return, did the right thing in the right moment. Unlucky conceding that Stringer “free)
1. Pendlebury (An almost night for Pendles. Didn’t like seeing him at HFF, he’s the leader of our midfield and we missed him in there at times)

Good point re Andrew Phillips. He laid an impressive 5 tackles but otherwise was comprehensively better.

5. Maynard
4. Daicos
3. Roughead
2. Pendlebury
1. Grundy

5 tackles 6 clearances for Phillips. Not a horror game compared to what we’ve seen by some rucks. But certainly well beaten.
Unfortunately our combined midfield was well beaten. Win the hit outs 41-13 and you should never lose the clearances 28-38. Inexcusable.

5 Maynard - clearly the standout
4 Daicos - just keeps improving, smart player and generally uses it well
3 Grundy - not too much more he can do
2 Pendlebury - below his best but wasn’t embarrassed like some
1 De Goey - tough to find someone worthy of the 5th slot but his game was a vast improvement on recent outings.

Honourable mentions to Roughy and Shaz. Shaz in particular for his 1st game of the season was very solid.
Adams worked hard but just couldn’t bridge the gap between the opposition mids.
We’re lucky Stevo is hitting the scoreboard because he’s giving us next to nothing otherwise.
Tyler Brown started well but then faded, Cal was invisible for the 1st 3 quarters but came home like a freight train in the last.
WHE had his best game for the year but still needs to do more.
Thought Moore had an off night.
Treloar had just about the least impactful 30 possession game I think I’ve ever seen. Hopefully he’ll be better for the run.

Thought the rest lowered their colors on the night.

Must admit I could only find votes for Maynard (even he had multiple goals kicked on him) and Daics jun. who worked hard all night and shows some skills. Treloar tried hard but sprayed it everywhere and kicks it as soon as he gets it or fires out dangerous handballs. Grundy tireless but still not connecting with mids. Moore did not have much damage done to him by opponents but does not offer enough drive when at full back just purely negating. Looked frustrated. Stevo has scoreboard impact but precious little else. Thought Shaz showed some class and did not panic when in tough situations. Browns were shocking except for Callum doing okay when the heat when off a bit. Adams tries hard but gets shown up by classier mids. Jordy better than the past few games but little impact. Wills not up to standard. Roughy pretty solid but under pressure a lot because of our shocking midfield.

Votes for Round 5:

5: Maynard (69 votes)
4: Daicos (56)
3: Grundy (25)
2: Pendlebury (19)
1: Stephenson (13)

The others:

Roughead (11)
Treloar (8)
Scharenberg (5)
Moore (2)
De Goey & Adams (1 each)

Very uniform votes this week reflecting the lack of good performances. Every voter bar two had Maynard 1st and Daicos 2nd. One had that order reversed and one had Maynard 1st and Grundy 2nd with Daicos 3rd.

Leaderboard after Round 5:
