Diet and nutrition

Not sure about raskolnikov but I am zero carb/fibre apart from the odd baked zucchini a couple of times a week. Still as regular as ever just less waste (sorry for the tmi). All the old science of eat a lot of fibre and wholegrains to be healthy was a myth to line the grain, corn and sugar farmers pockets with intense support by their lobbyists in the US. Ancel Keys ruined public health. Fibre absorbs a lot of moisture and then expels it which depletes nutrients and electrolytes in our body and will often cause gut inflammation and electrolyte imbalance leading to bloating and lethargy.

Protein, which is easily convertible to the essential amino acids is all humans require to thrive. Only animal proteins and eggs can supply the whole spectrum of bio-available amino acids without supplementation and it comes with the right combination of saturated fat to transport nutrients and vitamins.

That's the thing to a certain extent. What works and what substitutes.

There is no doubt that you can survive and possibly thrive on limited carbs or fats as long as you get enough protein.

The issue for me is the fact that we often talk about limiting macros like it's rock paper scissors

I'm happy with my current eating habits ie. moderate LCHF..... but the information out there is so confusing. I'm interested in whether you can consume too much protein? It's so hard if not impossible to find reliable longitudinal studies with human subjects on all things diet related, most if not all are people filling out questionnaires.(I suppose you can't lock humans in cages like rats for long periods of time and feed them exactly what you want them to eat:eek:) People seem to thrive on a diet anywhere from strict raw plant based to strict beef only regimes.

I'd say if you just cut out as much processed crap as possible that is a great way to go about it for the vast majority of people.

I'd suggest you'd need to be sucking down protein shakes all day to even get close to consuming too much.

On the lower end...

IFBB pro Bodybuilder John Meadows maintains his muscle on 100-150g a day.

4 time Mr Olympia Jay Cutler was on 200-300g but consumed 1000g of carbs per day in the off season.

On the extreme end...

Kai Greenes trainer suggested he consume 600 g protein a day, up to 1000 grams on leg day. Maybe he was just trolling for the cameras as I'm not even sure you can achieve that.

To put it in perspective, eating 1 kg of salmon per day is 200 grams protein.

I kg of beef roast per day is 300 grams protein.

500 grams of protein per day is actually a good day of eating. You'd get jacked off that if you pumped the iron.

No wonder the kids in the gym are all twigs. Not enough protein.

tl,dr: If you're eating moderately then 'too much protein' isn't a concern.

Thanks ET.

I went out for dinner last night (I'm not a big beef eater) and had a 400gm sirloin medium rare, mouth watering and delicious, for anybody out there in Brisbane or planning a visit, maybe a footy trip in 2020 The Morrison Hotel which is 500 meters from the Gabba I highly recommend.

Another interesting Podcast from Joe Rogan yesterday on health/fitness/nutrition, with ultra marathon runner Zach Bitter, this snippet on thriving on varied diets is good, the whole Podcast is worth the listen.

Yes he is but not as strict as he used to be, doesn't keep a diary on what he eats as he said he knows what his body needs, carb loads some days depending on amount of work planned, IIRC 30km+ days.

^ Dale Morris was low carb too, quite open about sweet potato being his main carb source and he would drink litres of bone broth daily last year to recover from injury.

Surprisingly, some AFL footballers avoid protein powder - even those who are eating hourly to try and get their calories up (Tim English).

The bone broth helped when he did his knee halfway through his first game back......if he was 26 years old he would of gone under the traditional reconstructive surgery

Players are most likely avoiding protein powders to remove the risk of inducing contaminated products that may have banned substances

Theirs a lot of hype in all dietary choices, but bone broth is the biggest con.
Tastes awesome, and brilliant for cooking, but the only health benefit is its better than sugary juices and soft drinks.

No links, but I'd welcome links to support bone broth being some magical suppliment.

Here's a slightly macabre animal study.

Conclusion: The present study demonstrate that a daily oral administration of concentrated bone broth as dietary supplementation in rabbits enhance bone healing by increase callus density in CT, and improve histomorphometric evaluation of healing.

Healthy yes, magic no. Big difference from it offering health benefits to repairing knee ligaments in record times.

For the record Dale Morris’ ACL never healed full he just played knowing it eas a tickling time bomb ready to go at anytime and it was the last time he would play AFL.

so its just an opinion based on personal experience?
No, some N=1 personal experience, but a total lack of any published evidence.
I went through the bone broth stage some years vack and couldnt identify any change or improvement. (Two realy bad arthritic knees)
If people want it, i have no issue, but it isnt a magic drink.

fair enough, but this is a long way away from saying its only health benefit is that its better than having soft drink.

my understanding is that the bones (marrow mostly) and surrounding connective tissue contain a bunch of really good nutrients and that slow cooking helps extract them.
