Difference between AFl & MCC Memberships?

I'm AFL but from what I can gather.

Dress Code: AFL anything; MCC Must have a collar etc.
Grog: AFL can drink at your seat; MCC you can't
Cricket: AFL half price; MCC Free
Membership: $ to Support Club & AFL Club membership acknowledged; MCC keep all proceeds.
Docklands: AFL yes; MCC No.
Other Events: AFL No; MCC Perhaps? Soccer yes, concerts?
Crossover to public area: AFL Most games; MCC Always.

Obviously the MCC is in a newer stand with better facilities.
They are talking of updateing the GSS by building over the railway line to provide more room.
MCC is probably more prestigious but if you are 90% AFL inclined and less for other sports AFL is probably better value for money.

All pretty much true. However MCC dont keep all proceeds, a portion of membership goes back to the nominated home club, depending on attendance. And what proceeds they do keep eventually gets spent on improving facilites in the entire stadium.

Also while MCC Members have no access to Docklands, they can buy Access 1 seats on level two for general admission prices - until sold out

MCC is far better than AFL - except of course for one important factor, the long waiting list. Better bars, better facilities, more food choices, better protection from the weather, better view of the ground, free admission to museums and the library, and in some cases, better seats (if you get the comfy cushioned seats in front of the Frank Grey Smith Bar).

Hell, I have been a full member since 93.. I have only missed a few grand finals in that time.

I Still buy a Hawk membership every year. Do it to support the club, as some of us remember 96.... (And I go to one tassie game with the Boys)

One of the biggest differences is that the MCC has a lot more respect for its members than the AFL has for its members.

im a full AFL member and on the waiting list for MCC and have gone a thousand times as a guest as many mates of mine are members. Both are very good in their own ways, now that the MCC area has finally caught up with times.

They arent 100% comparable though, as obviously the MCC membership is basically a membership for the ground, where as the AFL membership gains you same rights at the Dome and for many clubs that is as if not more important than the G.

Being an Essendon supporter who goes to many non-Essendon games, Id take AFL membership over MCC if I had to chose on or the other.

The MCC has a little too much of an uptight feel for me as well, with the AFL members section a lot more of the "outer" feel, which I like.

Each to their own.

Unless you're under the age of 45, then you're a troublemaker. The MCC is very ageist.
Bulls**t. I have been an MCC member since I was 16 and I am 22 now. I only sit in the MCC area and largely try sit on level 2 reserve when ever possible. I have NEVER once been treated with anything but respect.

Last figures i heard, Essendon have the second most supporters who are MCC members (Dees first). Realising this the club have offered a 7 game home or 10 game (although think there's only 9 this year) home and away package for the dome games. It's great, the money i have saved on memberships (used to effectively have 2 tickets for myself at the g) i can spend on better reserve seats at the dome.

I signed up for an AFL membership today - with no joining fee because of work it was a no brainer.

Does an AFL membership get me into the AFL members allocation only, or can I pretty much go sit wherever there's general admission available? (talknig about the MCG here)

If your club support team is the home team you can enter at any general admission gate, though you won't be able to get into the AFL Members' Reserve.

For any other game you'll have to enter via the AFL Members' Reserve gates and for most games you can cross-over into the GA areas. The only games when you can't cross-over are Finals and H&A games that are going to have large crowds. Every week the AFL's emails will tell you which games will allow cross-overs. If you do cross-over I think can get a 'pass-out' so you can go back into the AFL Members' Reserve.

Thanks for the response, really appreciate it :thumbsu:

In your experience do many games "sell out" the AFL membership allocation? I figure it'd be a problem for the bigger clubs at the Dome but no so much at the G bar ANZAC Day?

Im a new MCC member and i think its good value. As long as you go most weeks and use it for the cricket. Im not sure what the perks of AFL membership is but if your teams home ground is the MCG. Also there are MCC organizations outside the MCG which you can get into (bowls club, MCC baseball club (in box hill))
Also some of the rules are annoying (Must wear collar)

Thank you. Glad to be of assistance.

Every season there there'd be only two or three H&A games that are AFL Member 'lock outs'. There hasn't been many, if any, at TD/ES either.

Thank you. Glad to be of assistance.

Again, appreciate the help. Last question I promise!

On the H&A "AFL member lockouts" that aren't ANZAC Day - i.e. where there would still be seating elsewhere in the ground - can you get in on a general admission basis, or would you need to buy a general admission ticket to get in?

This is assuming it's a, for my instance, non-Collingwood game.

I'm both an AFL Member and a (Restricted) MCC Member. I must admit this puts a strain on the budget, and if (or more likely when) it becomes too big a financial strain I'll be tossing in the AFL Membership.

Among the reasons are:
  1. As I said above, the MCC has a lot more respect for its members than the AFL has for its members.
  2. The new stand is better than the Great Southern Stand - better seating, better facilities, etc.
  3. MCC Members can sit on the wing on level 2, while AFL Members mostly can't get to the wing, Level 2 seats in the AFL Members' Reserve.
  4. Free access to the cricket and discounted entry to other events (soccer, etc.)
  5. I prefer walk-up rather than reserved seating, and the MCC provide better and/or more walk-up seating than the AFL.
MCC Membership doesn't get free entry to TD/ES matches, but we can get discounted entry to Access1 seating and most of the ES-tenant clubs have a membership category for MCC members.

In order to keep your promise, after this I'm not gonna answer any more of your queries! Okay? (At least, not on this thread....)

It more likely you'd have to buy a general admission ticket, as those matches will likely not allow cross-over.
