With the Lions delisting 3 young players one thing springs to mind in regard to one of them.
PERSONAL DETAILS
Name: Llane Spaanderman
Guernsey Number: 24
Date of Birth: 10 February, 1986
Birth Place: Perth
Height: 198cm
Weight: 99kg
Family Status: Single
Spaanderman was taken with the Lions’ first pick in the 2003 National Draft at No.18 from East Perth. Now without knowing any behind the scenes stuff , off ground attitude etc. he has played and has shown enough to think he may develop into a player yet the Lions have just let him go for nothing. Interesting.
Compare this to the Cats. Lonergan, Spencer ,McCarthy, H, Blake, Chambers are all around this kids size yet have been given more time to develop. Depending on one's own philosophy this may be considered patient/ diligent or conversely, (espec. if you are in Jacks camp) it may be just a lack of balls to make the hard calls, to cut ones losses on players that will never be the player you are looking for.
We kept Chambers and Street and eventually traded them for picks. The pick for street is now gone because it was used to get Haynes , we are yet to see what P35 can get us. Lonergan has now been on the list 3 years and shows now sign of cementing a spot, Spencer won the VFL B&F but who knows if that means anything. McCarthy has been here even longer , has shown no aptitude for improving his kick, has stuggled to stay fit yet still stays. In 06 we will find out how good this Steady Eddy approach is, Blake must show he can compete in the A's and H must continue to improve or we will slide.
Gennerally who's method is the correct one?. I prefer ours but their the club with success of recent times. Maybe they can make tougher calls because they have JB or they are going to pick up a young tall in this draft like Michael West who will need time or maybe they just know ruthlessness is needed to be a top club. Only time will tell who's correct but remember wasted space and time can not be returned.
