Fremantle Dockers vs St. Kilda

Sunday 29th June 15:10 AWST
Optus Stadium

Picture the scene. An expectant winner rolls into the arena; within seconds of commencement of battle it is clear the more hungry, aggressive challenger has their number. Soon it is over as blow after blow rain down, and their ineffectual attempts to cause damage are contemptuously swatted away. Nothing but humiliation greets them.

A period of reflection follows. They go back to basics, grow hungry. It is time; redemption awaits. Again the blows come thick and fast, but this time they are absorbed, time after time, until their opponent tires, then they are relentless. Attack after attack leaves their hapless foe out for the count, left in no uncertain terms to rue the day they awoke the beast within.

Rocky III was a great movie, wasn't it? And there's no reason this can't happen (the people that believe sport is staged will think they stole this plot line anyway); admittedly for the analogy to truly work, JLo would have needed to die and be replaced by Matty Pavlich, but who's to say JLo didn't die that day (metaphorically at least), reborn as a dashing and daring, thighs pumping on the beach, coach that is going to take us to the promised land?

First though, he must overcome. In his way stands the mighty Rossco and his (not so mighty) Saints...

What happened last time?

Key Questions:

Can Freo handle the heat?

Last time Ross had his big-bodied enforcers clamp down on Serong & Brayshaw, and the whole team capitulated. Even Bruce was shit, and he's never shit (especially when he's signing on 'til 2029. That's how you do it Weags). Hopefully the boys come out fired up and ready to lay down a percentage boosting beating, though, at this stage, a 6th win on the bounce will do.

Who rucks?
Rowan Marshall is a gun, but is he a brute? Can Jackson handle him alone or is this a course for Darcy's horse? I guess we'll find out soon. For mine, got to say I'd like to see more of Jackson roving and an improving Darcy lay the hurt on his opposition, have your say below.

Will Moose return?
Someone's gotta watch Cooper Sharman.

Will Fyfe play?
He was awful forward last week, amazing in the clinches vs North. Is it sub or bust? Has father time won, or can our greatest champion rise once more?

Can we readjust to our normal timeslot?
Having finally won under the bright lights of Primetime, can the Dockers get themselves for the Sunday graveyard shift?

How are Starlight going to make up the cash?
Freo have faithfully and successfully (pretty sure we usually win in our Starlight colours) raised money for Starlight over the years, and boy I hope they've been making hay whilst the sun shines, 'cos they're being paid by the goal, and I'm guessing grouchy Ross will be keen to make this the lowest total ever raised.

Hopefully Murph can bag another 4, and Vossy can do it for the kids. Maybe Shai will go at 100% accuracy and kick 24 himself. My money is on Treacy and Freddie leading the charge, with Brayshaw getting a brace for his favourite charity.

Are we going to win?
How would I know? Go ask the AFL scriptwriter.

Only thing missing was a training montage, but apart from that Mr Cheese this is Champagne Previewing!

So I guess Jacko gets off the chain?

Yeah, Jackson, Johnson get thirty each. Tackles I mean.

Freo win 0.4 to St Kilda 0.2 - all rushed behinds.

Sean Darcy has 200 hitouts. Two umpires throw their shoulders out from balling it up.

Due to the Windhager Daicos tag copping heat during the week, I expect the umps to be red hot on young Windy as he attempts to hold Calebs hand all game. Hopefully this means a few frees coming his way. If he starts trying to knee Serong's hammy, I expect half of Optus will be ready to go over the fence.

Ross : ****ing tag him!
Assistant 1 : Who Ross?
Ross: All of them dammit. Tag the lot.
Assistant 2: But Ross there's to many to tag.
Ross : So, that was his plan all along, naming 22 good players. You're quite brilliant Justin.

I think it’ll be more like this, and Windhager will be given an even longer leash.

But will they stop the backs from assaulting Amiss every time the ball goes into our forward line?

That's a blue vein (of the cheese variety) preview Mr Cheese.

The image of JLo as a dashing and daring coach with thighs of iorn pounding up the beach is seared into my conciseness. Please let the part about dashing and daring be true.

I was fine with Crowley tagging, I'm fine with Windhager tagging. If the rules aren't breached - all is good, if the rules need to be changed - fine, but as long as ANY player is within the rules, go for it.

Couldn't get the multiquote working... Anchorman said "will they stop the backs from assaulting Amiss every time the ball goes into our forward line?" Exactly. Stuff the rules for thee and not for me nonsense, enforce the rules without fear or favour and otherwise - let the game go on.

And stuff "the look of the game" or a desire for the stars to play bruise free footy, it is a competition damnit!

We have the slowest ball movement in the comp which is death against a Ross Lyon side. It's what makes Lyon a particularly bad matchup for JL. It's not just our pressure and contested footy that needs an improvement from the last time we met but what we do with the footy when we get it. No sideways chipfest please, go fast and direct and give treacy and co as many 1 on 1's as possible and we'll romp home. Having someone like NOD back should definitely help in that area.

I'm fine with us persisting with the two high end ruck combo we have. If it works, it creates a point of difference which a decent coaching strategy should be ale to translate into an advantage for us. On the downside, a good opposition coach could also exploit it, but that is the coaching game.
