Currently parents can receive disability support for a child with a disability.

I propose that this support should NOT be given to parents who voluntarily bring a severely disabled child into the world.

All parents should receive a in utero test for common disabilities. If the test comes up positive for a severe disability then they will NOT get any payments for the child.

Thoughts?

I shouldn't have to support someone else because they made the decision to bring a child into the world that requires constant care and can't contribute to society.

I'm not saying don't have the kid. I'm saying if you have the kid then live with the consequences and don't expect any help.

If this has a flow on effect for higher rates of abortion so be it.

"made the decision" ??

It's their ****ing child. They're going to love them no matter what.

The disability industry is the most undervalued industry in Australia and the government does shit all for people with disabilities.

Can't even believe this is a thread.

Maybe they should've used this all powerful "in utero" test on your parents.

Awesome idea Simmonds. :thumbsu:

.

This.

I remember watching a Four Corners ep, about young adults with disabilities and being forced to live in elderly nursing homes. Just broke you heart, imagine being condemned to live in one of those when you are in your 20s.

Also a mother even moved to ENGLAND ffs to get better care and educational support for her disabled child.

"Made the Decision".

In my scenario they had a test and found out the child would be severely disabled. At this stage they would have a decision to make. Do I abort or not? If they decide to have the child (which is their right) they will know in advance they'll be doing it without gov't support.

Abortion is NOT illegal so they definitely have decision to make.

You're making it seem like all disabled people are useless aliens - and I'm related to someone with Autism so I find that extremely offensive. You're obviously someone that has no connection to anyone that is disabled, or anyone that works in the industry, so you're pretty much a lost cause.

I'm not saying all disabled people are useless. I'm just saying that those who require permanent care and have severe brain impairments are 'useless aliens'.

I have no strong connection to anyone who is disabled.

Have you considered people that have a moral or religious objection to abortion?

So in your world no one should have free will to choose what is right or wrong.

Clown!

Should everyone just get an abortion because there's a chance their children will require Centrelink assistance?

When people reach Age Pension age should they be euthanized?

Completely different scenarios.

In my scenario centerlink dependence can be predicted.

Also most pensioners have contributed to society in some way during their life.

I dont agree with the OP in the terms that he framed it, but I can kinda relate.

I know a family with three kids. All are severely autistic. All will need close to full-time care for the rest of their lives. Why would you make that decision to have that third child? I dont mean they shouldve aborted the kid, I mean they shouldve made the responsible decision (as hard as it wouldve been) not to try to conceive that third child knowing the high probability of the child being born with severe autism and thus a low quality of life.

I'm closing this down.

OP, I don't believe you actually understand the ramification of what you are proposing.

You can't ask parents to make a decision with dollars being the prime decider of whether you terminate a life.

If there is an abortion debate to be had on this board, this is not the way I would choose for it to be framed
