Disappointing Melbourne

At least they protected their egos by telling the world they have been "rested". A bit suspect, didn't even pull the "general soreness" card - they are being protected from Geelong. Not sure how young Mckenzie feels, he's just not good enough and got the arse accordingly.

"Resting" Trengove and Scully for this week against the Cats. Shocking decision really as it would have been such a great learning curve for them.

Soft really

I'm disappointed but only because I love watching them play and will be deprived of that pleasure this weekend. I'm sure they're disappointed as they would love to compete against the best. However if you'd seen Trengove's last couple of last quarters, he has been absolutely out on his feet. He's well due for a rest. Scully not as obviously knackered but I guess coaching & conditioning staff know what they're doing.

It's not soft, it's not about Geelong, it's about the effect of the game last week in Darwin. No matter who we played this week I suspect those two boys would be rested.

They should be cherry ripe & champing at the bit next week though. Must look up the fixture & see who we play !

Bullshit. These kids are 18, this game is not made for 18 year olds putting their body through torture week after week as they fly around the country.

It's a struggle for many players who have been in the system for 8 years so I cannot possibly see why some people expect these kids to be able to get through it.

I can understand where Melb are coming from - seasoned bodies against tiring youngsters - it's a recipe for injury.

Unlike a lot of first year players - these two have been right at the coalface of the midfield - so it's fair enough.

The only thing that surprises me is to rest them in the same game - i would have thought one last week, one this week might be more appropriate. Would be great to Scully up against Bartel etc

It is disappointing but they are 18 and 19 and haven't had a rest this year. Playing in Darwin last week definately meant they needed a rest sooner rather than later but it would have been good to see them running with Ablett and Bartel to see how it's really done.

I think it's a pity to have both of them out at the same time. That can't be great for team cohesion. Wish it were one at a time so the setup doesn't completely change and throw the team off.

As much I would love to launch into a diatribe about how this indicative of Melbourne's soft as butter culture and question if snow has fallen at Hotham, its not the Bay so I won't.

There may well be very good reasons they aren't playing - fatigue, fitness etc. They are huge investments and if they've reported soreness etc then you'd have to think of the long term.

It is an interesting one. Our first game all year was an NAB Cup against Geelong that had a full strength midfield. Despite training the house down, Ryan Bastinac was not selected. Yet was selected the next week and hasn't missed a game since.

My honest view is Scott didn't want his very first game to be against the best, most battle hardened unit in the comp.

But by the same token, since Ben Cunnington has been fit enough to play seniors he has played every senior game and every week Scott has named the centre line of Ziebell - Cunnington - Bastinac.

I think Scott is clearly sending a message to the youngsters, who don't have anywhere near 50 games experience between them. You're the future, I'm putting my faith in you.

So it is six of one and half a dozen of the other.

Team lineups mean nothing though. Last time I checked Ziebell was the turnover king in defence.

You obviously don't check much. JZ had a dog of a game against Collingwood. Had a few mates too.

The next week he backed it up with a quality game with 75+ per cent disposal efficiency. Cost Mr Rude, one of your Bay13 types, a bet.

The point of what Scott is doing remains though: he's cementing in those young blokes minds they are expected to provide elite results.

Trengrove was the match winner in the last minute of the game. He was the best player in the second half and in the last quarter. You are just making up stuff to justify this selection.

This is the opposite end of the spectrum were a Geelong would rest Gary JR in a game they think they will definitely win. It appears Melbourne do not give themselves a chance to win this game.

Is this a serious post or are you taking the piss? McKenzie has been as good as Trengove and Scully. I'm blown away that he doesn;t get mentioned in the same breath when they talk about those two.

I've watched a reasonable amount of him. I think that people had too high expectations for him this year though, especially with returning from injury. Many times was it said that "he only has to stay fit to win the rising star"...

I think that if Melbourne thought that these guys needed a break at some point during the year just to recoup, they wouldn't have done it for the same week. Since they are both out this game, I'm sensing that they really were heavily affected by the tough game on Saturday.

We're giving our kids as much exposure as North. We don't play them though if they aren't fully fit.

Yeah, dropping 3 mids and bringing in a debuting mid (looks very promising though), half back flanker and full back is interesting. McKenzie was poor last week but has been very good in other games.

He's not mentioned in the same breath because he doesn't have anywhere near the same potential but in terms of 2010 performances, I'd have McKenzie at #2 just behind Trengove and just ahead of Scully.

No that's my point. He was simply "omitted" while the other 2 were "rested". Thought Melbourne could have at least made some shit up like they did for the other 2. (general soreness etc) Basically telling the kid/public they are being rested, you are being dropped. Thought it was a bit harsh.

If you read my original post, I wasn't having a go at Melbourne or the kids at all.

Or its just that there isn't anyone better?

Ah yes, okay, apologies. Thought McKenzie was 'rested' too. Interesting they took that approach.

Nah nah I know mate. I met a young Jack a couple of times and he's a quality young bloke. I don't know however what position Brad Scott thinks he's best in. He's gone from centre half back to centre half forward and with runs in the midfield over the whole year. Hopefully Brad doesn't do a Brad Miller to him.

Yeah I don't quite get it. We're all very excited to see Gizzberts debut tough.

He doesn't haven't the fitness to run out whole games as a midfielder. Was very good as a forward against Adelaide making Bock accountable.

My own view remains that by 22, when he's got the fitness base, he'll be massive midfield unit who swings forward.

Everyone responds differently to different situations. They might have identified that this is the better approach with McKenzie to get the best out of him.
It could also be that his GPS has shown his workrate and distance traveled has dropped recently and they don't want him to feel too comfortable.
I know he is highly rated around the club so ill have to trust them.
