Disappointing Melbourne

I don't see anything wrong with what Melbourne has done.

Scully and Trengove have played pretty much every single game since the start of pre-season, so that's about 13-14 weeks at senior level. On top of that, there is the Darwin factor which effects even the most senior players, let alone first year kids. They are due for a rest, and I am glad the club isn't running them into the ground.

McKenzie had a quiet game in Darwin last week, and with some experienced players to come back in, I'm not surprised he was dropped... Looking forward to seeing the Giz running around...

As for resting Trengove and Scully, it was due. The players were out on their feet last week, we have a 6.5 day turnaround, they've played the first 9 straight plus much of the pre-season, I have no problem with them being rested...

We have a good 15 years with the Scull/ JT combo, i'm sure we can all sacrifice 1 week. Looking forward to seeing Gysberts debut and Watts hopefully keep up his good form!

Not surprised or dissapointed they're being rested. Was a tough trip last week so they probably needed it. Melbourne probably had a pre organises plan going back months for them to be rested this week. A plan devised by better, more equiped sports medicos and trainers than the likes of me, so I won't be critisizing.

Don't see what the problem is at all.. The tigers did it with Martin a few weeks back also against the cats at Skilled.

It's a long season for these boys. Playing at level of intensity that they're not used to against some AFL hardened seasoned bodies is bound to take it's toll..

Just good player/list management if you ask me..

This!

I don't see the issue at all. Would love to see them play every weekend, but the reality is that they are both in need of a rest. No harm whatsover can come of resting the two of them. The Darwin game took a lot out of our senior players with many pre season's under there belt. Scully and Trengove have had half a pre season.

My main concern is that we have seemingly rested 3 young kids in Trengove/Scully and Mackenzie. May have been better resting only 1 or 2 this week, then resting the other one next week. But again, I'm not in a position to judge, and neither is anyone on this board who isn't within the inner sanctum of the MFC. There wasn't such an outrage when Richmond rested Martin. The only difference i see is that we are resting 3 of our up and coming kids at the same time. They don't need to get smashed against a strong Geelong side to learn anything. And playing a debutant in Gysberts pretty much dispells the myth that they are protecting the young kids against the bigger bodies of Geelong. It's obvious the Darwin game took a hell of a lot out of the kids.

Whilst Scully and Trengove have both been very good, to suggest that Melbourne is basically conceeding the game is just a rediculous statement. They have played 9 games of footy. It's not like it's Ablett and Chapman being rested.

The club has done a very impressive job of developing players thus far, with Frawley, Grimes and co all coming along very well, so if this is what the club thinks is best for their development, then I'm happy enough with the decision. The game isn't the same as it was when other elite midfielders debuted like Ball, Ablett, Hodge etc. It's much faster, much more 100% running involved. So the young kids are coming into a game that is much more physically demanding. If this move keeps them up to scratch for a longer period of the season then it's the best move. Martin has missed a game, as has Lucas, Melksham, Colyer etc etc. Might have been for a different reason, but I suspect if they had played every game this year they would soon be rested as well.

As for McKenzie - no point sugar coating the reason he isn't playing this week. If his performance isn't up to scratch then he has to deal with that. If he can't handle that then he shouldn't be in the AFL. Loved the kids work this year, and seems like he will be able to handle being dropped rather than rested.

i would like to see them keep on playing. i hope it is an ijury that has kep them out of the game. resting them at this stage of the season. i am not a fan of that

Why we did it with Melksham and Coyler a couple of weeks ago.

Although the fact they've done it when they are due to play Geelong makes it seem like they are conceeding defeat.

Nothing wrong with it at all. Melbourne aren't a top 8 side this year and need to just focus on the development of players which is going along very nicely. If they rest a couple of their young guns because of it oh well small price to pay for long-term gain.

It is a big ask to play an 18 year old every week in his first season. They are coming off a trip to Darwin and are going to play against the best side in the comp that have solid bodies in the midfield so i can see why they chose this week to rest them. I can understand people being disappointed but i think that this week was as good as any to give the kids a break.

I don't have a problem with the "resting" of young players.

However, it is ironic that both now Melb and Rich have opted to "shield" and "protect" their young talent from games against Geelong.

+1 :thumbsu: Some sense spoken there

Every decision the club has made over the last 3 years has been right and for the betterment of the club long term. Make no mistakes about it the dees have bottomed out and rebuilt the entire club (off-field an on) made tough decisions and copped it's share of sh*t in order to build a premiership winning side in 3-5 years time. All evidence suggests that they are tracking perfectly to achieve this so who are we to question the clubs decision to rest kids when they feel it's needed?

I trust the footy department at my club much more than BF posters from other clubs thinking they know how to manage a list better than a professional football department

I'd love to see the reaction of Melbourne supporters if Melbourne lose by 3 points and miss out on the finals by 1 game. Would it be worth it then?

Don't think so.

IF Ricky Pettard had marked the ball, we would have beaten the Pies.
IF we didn't let the dogs kick two quick goals then we would have won the game.

It's a long season..

they are situations that were uncontrollable in the context. Resting players is controllable.

highly unlikely situation, but it makes you think doesn't it.

Whilst we are speculating... what if Gysberts has 30 touches, and Warnock keeps Pods goalless, and Bruce doesn't let Stevie J have a touch? What if then? What if Melbourne wins this game, and after Scully and Trengove have had a rest we win every game for the rest of the year and win the premiership on the back of their flawless, well rested performances?

A season is never defined by a single game or moment, it's the culmination of 22 rounds of football. And who is to say that the guys aren't so stuffed after playing in 33 degree heat and 80% humidity, that if they did play they would be completely uselss, and Geelong would beat us by even more than they are going to already.

Speculation is uselss!

Agreed. Its easy for us to sit here and speculate and laugh at players who are dropped, but the reality is that we dont know the true condition of Scully and Trengrove. Considering Melbourne have beaten Brisbane and should have beaten Collingwood, I dont see why they dont at the very least think they are in for a decent shot against the Cats. They wouldnt have dropped those two players unless it was neccessary.

It was like how the Cats rested Pods, even though he had bene our best goal scorer for a couple of games previous. Because in reality it was his first season and he was sore and they decided that it was worthwhile bringing in someone fresh who wans't going to endanger the game.

If we're talking "what ifs"

What if they didn't rest them and they were completely spent by about round 16/17, this way they give them a rest before the break, then they should be "cherry ripe" for the second half of the season. Maybe they have been a bit sore and the Darwin trip took a bit out of them.

IMO, excellent decision by the club.

The only people annoyed by this would be DT/SC coaches, here's a heads up, you should have cashed one if not both of them in by now and used the cash to upgrade.

Let's expand on this shall we?

We miss out on the finals by one game, but later in the season Scully and Trengove get us over the line in several games. The fact that they were rested mid season helped them towards the end because they were alot fresher.

The result is a good decision by the club and we just missed out on finals because we weren't quite ready :thumbsu:

They are not resting them because they are 100% fit.

It could just as easily be said that if we played them but they played badly, couldn't run the game out or were injured and Geelong over ran us it was a bad decision. If's mean nothing. Again, I think the professionals have a better idea of their condition and are able to judge the situation better than the fans.

Hmm I'm not too pleased with the decision but then again how would any of us know how they pulled up after playing in 35* weather in Darwin???

I'm sure they can rotate on Chris Judd next week

thats what ox said on the radio, they were just shattered after Darwin and really just needed a break. Missing one game isn't going to hurt them, they are going to both be in the top 10 in 3 years. Us making the finals this year is not the aim, its getting all the kids going and Gysberts is getting his first game and he's another in and under midfielder. We will be shyting on Geelong at skilled in 2-3 years
