Very disappointing finish to the year, however, as I have said all month, it has been a good year for the Magpies, and on the day the better team won. We finished 7-8 (??) and many predicted another bottom 4 finish.

Malthouse outcoached?? Captain obvious, everytime a side loses it is because they are outcoached apparantly .

We lost because

-We got absolutely smashed in the clearances. Burns, holland, obree and licca are our best clearance players and they got a total hiding. Probably as one sided as i have seen this year

-When we had chances we did not take them. I thought Taz was one of our best but he needs to learn to kick the important goals . Bad kicking is bad footy.

-Tackling was woeful. I lost count of how many goals the Dogs scored in pieces of play resulting in broken tackles. I think it has been a weakness all year and today it really cost us.

-Finally the doggies wanted it alot more. They were fantastic. If it had to be any side I am glad it was the dogs. I love the way the play and I hope they can do well although the next 2 weeks is a pretty tough ask.

Malthouse could have swang the midfield around a bit more but I doubt it would have made much of a difference. The coaches had very little to do with the result today.

Spot on.
I would also add - at times we looked like we were more interested in not making mistakes, than we were in taking chances

I have always liked mick malthouse but maybe its time to let someone else have a crack at this coaching caper , it worries me watching mick getting upset in the coaches box that his health is going to be his downfall. Bluey mckenna and mick mcguane would be great.

Doctor?

Well you had a pretty poor day. For once our tall defenders beat their opponents convincingly but from quarter time on we just wanted the ball more than you and had the pace to outrun you. Griffen shrugged about 10 of your tackles and you didn't seem clever enough in the tigt situations that we managed to work our way out of. However, it seemed to be a day where you never really got going and there were positives such as Dale Thomas and Egan in flashes. You guys need a better runner than the likes of Licuria and O'bree pace wise as we outsprinted you easily today.

Malthouse will probably stay and sook for another year. To be honest, any side that contains Reece Shaw, Leon Davis and Lonie will never win a flag. Footsteps.... footsteps... just the mention of it turns those 3 to jelly.
You know what shyts me more then todays loss?
So many people having a go at the likes of Shaw, Davis and Lonie.
Shw has pace, we lack pace, he also showed last year, before injury, he is capable of being a good wingman for this club.
Davis is ELECTRIFYING, he is the heart beat of a dead game, he will light it up and WIN games. We wouldnt nickname him 'Magic' for any other reason. LAY OFF.
Finally, Lonie. He has one of the best kicks in the club. He knows how to read plays well. His delivery is close to perfect. He is in the top 5 in the AFL for shots at goal on the run from 50. He isnt the only soft player in the AFL. Most people saw what Josh Hunt did, does that make him shyt? Id love Hunt at Collingwood, even if he was to do that again, not every player will be as hard as nuts! GET OVER IT! These 3 players are INTEGRAL to the success of Collingwood in the next 5-10 years.

Malthouse got smashed.

- Didn't know what to do with the Doggie forward line once Brad Johnson wasn't up there. Had no idea.

- Couldn't swing the midfield changes to any effect.

- Once forward setup plan A was done with there was no Plan B. Unless it was... and wait for it ... it's amazing... Buckley to full forward!! Wow! That will swing the game. Never see that coming. Malthouse is a genius!

Sure the game never comes down to just the coach, but he has to take some of the blame. Collingwood looked like they thought the game was going to fall in their lap. Spiritless. Heartless. Soft. Etc

I can understand how you feel, and I shouldn't have been so outspoken either. If it was my team I would be devastated. It is such an emotional game, and believe me we have had our share of losses this year too. Hopefully we will have a better year next year..we have to have some hope for the future, no matter what team you support. We all love our own club.

All my old man wants to do is sack Malthouse and give McGuane the top job. It's ridiculous on quite a few levels, but, and it's crazy to say, its got merit on some as well.

Your old man has no idea!!! Ill tell you why we lost today, first of all Speed is good but not most important as the media blow it up to be something it aint!!! When you play a team like the dogs and hesitate with the ball, you give them time to put numbers in their defence and FLOOD! and eventually after you stuff around with ball your kicking to a flooded fwd line, you turn the ball over and the dogs run it out....it happened over and over again all day!!!!!

LONG AND DIRECT FOOTY!

Poor finish to an improved year.

Nonetheless do you think we have established a platform from which to launch further next year?
In what areas did we improve? We moved up the ladder a bit but we blamed injury for our ladder position. We had a much better run with injury but beyond that we did not improve anything. Thomas was the bright spot and Pendlebury showed promising flashes. Didak often looked like a gun. I’ll forgive his final at this point. He has delivered under pressure before. Fraser showed he is a classy player although very limited as a pure ruckman. They are literally the only positives I can take from the year.

Which part of that isn’t the coach’s fault? The list building or the game plan?

McGuane is an interesting one. As you suggest Murray, there are negatives. He could be a very good coach though. I have no idea, but I'd love to know how he has handled himself in the last few years.
