But the premiers just brought in frawley and o' rouke this year and who knows who'll they get next year. Why isn't there a restraint of trade for them? Swans are playing by the rules and yet are punished? That's just absurd
They'll be in for some hurt when contracts are needing to be renegotiated, COLA as it stands in todays age, is an unfair advantage because it is not being used for what it was intended to be used for, and is instead used as an additional 3rd party payment for being traded in, in effect.

Sydney needs no more enticing to attract players or investment.

They are welcome to trade… just need to stop receiving COLA.

It shows how big an advantage it is when they would prefer not to do any trades over 2 years than cut out COLA.

FFS, these guys have just been handed a top 3 talent draft player at pick 18.

You could call this move by the AFL is a greed/stupidty tax, the AFL have given them a massive leg-up for years which was highly controversial already… and then they have the audacity to recruit the 2 biggest name forwards on obscene contracts… which really just highlighted how absurd their salary situation was.
They probably can't.

They said on the radio Sydney have to reduce it by 800k next year and 600k the following year.

It's a bit strange. They're getting an easy run with the academy anyway. Restricting Sydneys ability to trade players in is odd. Guess that is what happens when you steal a player from the AFL's love child.

AFL don't know what they're doing atm. This and the Essendon FA/not FA?

So let's see, players wanting out

Collingwood: O'Brien, Beams, Martin retired
Essendon: Ryder, Hardingham, Winderlich
Footescray: Jones, Cooney, Tutt, Griffen
Western Sydney: O'Rourke, Jaksch
Geelong: Varcoe, Christenson

Meanwhile

St Kilda: 19 youngsters re-signed

How about that?

They certainly could… just means they would actually have to give something up.

Retire Goodes, trade out Reid, Mitchell & Jetta, and they'd still be a top 4 side.

You can bet your arse this came about because they've had a massive crack at Frawley & then probably Griffen…

They have been just pissing all over the whole competition, enough's enough.

anyone else wondering if we tried to trade them a player?
I really can't understand how the AFL can just come out and say that to the Swans. It screams of desperation and lack of control. I hate the dammed sydney bonus and everything it stands for, but the way the afl have done this leaves an awful taste in my mouth. Imagine how it's being portrayed in Sudney? They afl will look stupid exactly where IT is trying to grow the game.

Griffen & Frawley might have something to do with it.

Not to mention Greenwood wanting out and Malceski walking.

Although we've had out fair share the last couple years and it certainly looks like this is the future for trading. Everyone took notice of the 5 Brissy kids that all got to where they wanted to go last year.

I think the dogs fans are getting ahead of themselves on their board. Pick 4, 19 and boyd for griffen for example.
Oh for ferks sake! The media is buying into it as well now saying GWS are "perfectly placed" to be a major winner this trade period after they snag pick 7 and use 4 & 7 for Griffin. Major winner my ass, that's essentially giving up say a Wright/Laverde combo for the next 12 years for a bloke that will play 3/4 decent seasons when your a not even in contention. They are being swept up with the idea of landing a "big fish", the reality is it is very stupid trade if they go through with it. It is just disappointing that they appear not to be doing a stupid trade with us.......

What a day. Griffin wanting out is unbelievable. So are picks 4 & 7 for Griffin a lock or purely speculation? I would of thought the Dogs would be trying to pry loose a ready made kpp.

It makes a lot of sense for GWS, too. Discussing this with one of their on Twitter, it brings forward their premiership window and they'll be a better chance of re-signing all the youngsters that may want out in the future. While it's near idiotic in the sense that they don't need to give that much up for a 28 year old lacking leadership, Griff giving up money makes it a must-do.

I think the key player here could be Macrae. If Jack speaks up against McCartney, the board would nearly be mad to back in the coach with their next gun possibly on the line.

Their best option might be to sack McCartney and offload Minson, Griffen and go to the draft.

Having a read on the GWS forum they seem happy to give up at least Picks 4 and 19.

He's got 3-4 years left which is a heap of time for them to come into their premiership window (hell, I've got a fair bit of money on them making the big dance by the end of 2017). Plus, he will be their first real big coup. Scully is mediocre, Ward and Davis don't have the star factor. Griffin does.

Will be interesting to see how this pans out.

Hawthorn have done it without unfair advantages. I don't understand it people complain that Sydney are given too much but when something's taken away they say "omg how can they do that!?".

A move like this actually gives us faith that we're not all here to make sure Sydney are in the top 4 every year. Gotta be the Gil factor. :D

He is a good player but definitely not great. Two top 7 picks for him is massive overs, I can't see it happening. Compare it to dal santo (similar age and accolades to griffin) 26, mcevoy (ten year solid ruckman) 18 & savage. He will have 3-4 years left in him, won't contend and gws have given up those two players like you said.

I also thought I wonder if griffin was plan b and pick 1 was plan a and the saints were being tough on them?

No way GWS accept their first pick being in the 40's! Probably wouldn't even use it.

This is really going to drag out isn't it.
