Twenty years ago, I knew a journalist with 'The Age' who used to catch a cab to the city and back again, from his house in Warrandyte, (near country for those in other states) every day.

The first thing he'd say to the driver after giving him his destination was, "If you don't say a word during the journey, there's an extra five dollars in it for you." He reasoned that the three hours work he could do in transit was more important than pretending interest in some asinine convo. with a cabbie.

Also, barbers should be compulsirorily gagged. Even though they too have a captive audience, they have nothing significant to contribute to public conversation.
 
I take it that journo was milking an expense account for those trips?

A book full of cab vouchers is a wonderful thing. It also made it possible for him to have a session at 'The Golden Age' pub after work. Unlikely that such a thing would still go on. Maybe it was he who sent Fairfax into a downward spiral.
