So how does any of that improve Deledio's game by taking him off a front runner because he cant run both ways?

Great way to teach the kids. :thumbsu:

People need to realize 2011 is all about development, nobody learns anything by papering over the cracks, Deledio is a #1 Draft Pick and got towelled up by a front runner in Pearce, does that say more about Deledio or about Hardwick?

OMG:confused: Deledio is not a kid, has played 100+ games and is 24 years old. He had zero impact in the first half tagging. Should have been moved off Pearce or even forward as the front half were horrendous all night. Good coaches make moves, you must be proactive in the modern game it's as simple as that. Try something FFsake, don't let the game unfold and hope it turns!! That game was in trouble after the first qtr and our coaching staff tried nothing:thumbsdown:

gtfo why is he in the team? has shown nothing yet, let him develop in the 2's at the very least why is he starting and tuck sub. in conditions tailor made for tuck.
or hislop,webberly???
cannot get my head around this one.

Wow. What a night.I flew up to this game with my family. And despite my mates telling me it was a 'danger game', filled with the new tiger passion i scoffed at such suggestions. I said 'this is not the wallace/frawley era.We dont't function as a club like that any more, it simply won't happen'. And now, i sit here in my hotel in Darwin with a beer and a nice plate of humble pie.

A few things are on my mind. From the sidelines the ball resembled a hot potato. We could not mark a thing and fumbled consistently. It was not a humid night in darwin, surely no dew issues. However, Port seemed prepared, many players wore gloves tonight (am i looking to deep, or is this a team with experience at the ground , albeit typically unsucessful experience..) Did we underestimate the significance of travellingt to Darwin? We travelled up yesterday arvo and had an arvo kick on the ground. Is this enough? If we sell games, surely we must prepare better. Gee, selling this game will hurt if we finish 9th by a close margin. does the profit we make tonight correlate to a potential final against blues/dons etc?

Mitchell Farmer. I won't waste a paragraph. Its pretty obvious.

Helbig, not up to it YET. nothing against him, he has had his crack etc, but needs a spell for a little while.

Rance/browne - Stunning last week, but that series of turnovers which ripped our guts out in the last Q kind of reminded us all of our pre game apprehension last week. Their skills are undeniably shakey and can be detrimental at times as seen tonight.

All in all, a sickening night. A bye next week could play against us, I feel we needed to come out this week and make a statement. I just hope the pain doesn't die down over the break. This was insipid. This was 'disgusting'. This was simply not representative of whatthis new brand of RFC stands for and I think thats why it hurts so much. We expect better these days (and rightly so, our past month has been a credit to all).

So a 100 gamer 24 year old Deledio who is touted by many as 'Elite' couldn't beat one of the biggest front runners in today's game on merit.

But hey lets protect these guys from actually having to work hard and beat there opponent on merit and move them all over the ground so they don't learn anything

Sometimes a coach has to make moves, I'm sorry but I don't think Hardwick is a guy that will do that and it's going to cost us more than tonights game in the long run. If it's not working YOU CHANGE IT!!!!!!!

Deledio was better than Pearce

Deledio was well beaten by Pierce.

Maybe you forgot but this isn't a year where we are pushing for finals!!!

It is a frekin development year, how hard is it for people to understand????

How does moving Deledio off that front running piece of shit teach him anything about football.

For heavens sake look at the bigger picture for once, if he cant beat that front running how does he expect to go on the big stage when the heat is turned up and players like Deledio who only run one way are found out??

It's best dealt with now while in development year and any flaws he has will be ironed out.

Sure, that may be true for teams that are looking to be a contender come finals time, but for a team still developing it's not the best way to teach the kids.

The best way to teach the kids is to let them play the game out on there direct opponent and beat them on merit, obviously as they learn they will lose more then they win, it's part of there development and will only benefit them in the long run.

It has nothing to do with development as a team, we have other options when it comes to shutting players down and they should have been used.

It has everything to do with his development, this is how Deledio has gotten a free ride from us supporters over the years, he gets beaten, gets moved around the ground and learns nothing from it.

I'm sorry but no one gets a free ride, you get beat, learn from it and work on your deficiencies.

Helbig and Miller were horrendous. It was like the two of them had been paid to screw up every forward drive we made. .

In my opinion (as someone who has experienced playing footy up in Darwin) it was an enormous mistake to take Miller after he'd been out with a virus the week before. He might have seemed well enough and probably would have been fine anywhere else but the flight plus the conditions in Darwin would have seen him stuffed by quarter time.

Miller's no champion but he always gives an honest performance. So when he plays like he did against Port you can be certain he's not 100% right physically. He should have been given an extra week's rest but you've got the bye next week so he'll be right after that.

You win I've given up MT. But if I ever see Hardwick coach another game and make zero moves when players are getting clearly beaten young or old in a game we should win. My membership is in the mail, this is not under 16s local footy. Encouragement will only get you so far!

It's not about winning the argument, everyone is entitled to there opinion as are you, a difference of opinion is what makes the world go round. :)

And as to the bolded part, it has nothing to do with Encouragement, it's about developing, we all know how good Deledio is good running forward, heck any player can be good offensively, it's what separates the good players with the great players in how hard they can run the other way defensively.

Dale Thomas is the perfect example of this, from memory he spent 2 years playing in the backline, people were questioning it, at the time it didn't look like a good move, but as we can see now with him defensively he is a very good player and runs both ways, it's all about development.

Look guys I dont mean to sound condescending but we were in the exact same place two years ago.

We would put in one good performance, get media hype going, and inevitably every time we wouldnt show up the next week. Ratten was criticized over his lack of move making on gameday, senior players wouldn't seem to be trying and youngsters would be constantly stuffing up. Sounds very similar to what u guys go through now.

It is of course incredibly frustrating to see these things happen but u just have to realise supporting an AFL team is just a waiting game. When your players begin to hit the 90 game average mark for experience Richmond will be in a very good place. I think the most important thing is sticking with players that you want in the 22 in 2 years time and only make minor adjustments from week to week. Forget massive changes every week when a team doesnt perform, it doesnt help.

Players receive massive confidence when they know their head is not on the block so I think Hardwick should just stick with the same guys the majority of the time and they will end up being good. U may not think a lot of players out there tonight have a chance of making it but think back to Jordan Russell. He was God awful and I mean God awful. Constant turnovers in defence, leaking three easy goals a week on average and had the Blues faithful up in arms over his continued selection (myself included). But Ratten stuck with him and eventually he developed the confidence and ability to play very well at AFL level.

I just think you may have a few players who can be like that.

Thomas did do that, never had an opponent for those 2 years though. Played loose every game just like Shaw does now.

Everything about tonight was disgusting.....bloody typical, we get good media and then get outplayed by supposedly the worst team in the comp. Disgraceful

Why was Tuck the substitute?
Why is Helbig getting a game over a Nason/Webberly?
Why is Browne playing? He's terrible, at least Gus can kick!

'Development Year' is no excuse for the ******ation that was on display tonight. Why is it teams like Essendon and West Coast can go from a rabble to awesome in the space of a year, yet for richmond it's a painfully slow process.

Sorry, im just shattered after tonight......i dont normally get angry after losses

What i love about this current Richmond version, is they will not be compromised on their initial plan of transition/development/finals. Dimma appears to be a man who has a plan, and will at all costs stick to it.

We have no idea of individual player coaching instructions and the instructions for development they have been sent out with.

Maybe Dimma doesn’t want to make certain moves. Remember Conc on Milne? Gameday thread was screaming Conc should be moved, but Dimma went on record after saying it was for his development he stayed put. Look at Dusty, Dimma seems ok to keep a tag on him, Great learning curve.

Have faith in what takes place in the coaching box. They know more than we ever will .

And look how well that's turned out for both Collingwood and Thomas.

Thomas was labelled as soft and a front runner, he aint that soft kid any more.

cannot get my head around this one.

I'm going to go into bat for Helbig. Posters here, often want Morton or Connors to become a Stevie Johnson type player for us, they won't but Helbig will. It will however take time.

Had a lot of fumbles tonight and kicked a couple of behinds, not a good game. But soon those behinds will become goals and his DE% will improve. For example, in the 1st he put in a poor kick inside 50 to JR who was leading to a pocket. Most just see the kick, I see the hard running and double lead to get the ball in the first place. Plenty to work with here.

Not singling you out criticize as it seems a lot of posters don't see the same upside with Helbig that I do.

Totally agree Bazzar. It's not the coaches that have changed their plan, it's the supporters that have changed our expectations for this season. A sniff of finals and we get more feral than a pack of rabid dogs with sunstroke.

gtfo why is he in the team?

Simple. These days you dont get picked as a third rounder if you are a total spud. Most teams have the luxury of developing draft picks in the 2`s because their team is fairly established. Not so with us.

Hardwick has right from day one told the world he wants games, games and more games into the new picks. Helbig might be patchy now, but he has the hardness and a touch of class that will see him in our best team going forward. This time next year as a 19 going on 20yo will have 25+ games, his second pre-season under his belt, and be an extremely valuable half forward flanker for us. That’s why he is getting a premature gig.

Grigg. Slow, makes bad decisions and shirks the contest.
Helbig. First year player, he clearly isn't ready..his fumbles are beyond a joke, leave him at Coburg for a few weeks give him some confidence FFS.
Not starting Tuck
Browne's kick across ground. Browne in general.
Miller.

To be fair it would be hard to judge Helbig on this game where there were players fumbling everywhere.

My thoughts were that Richmond should have simplified their game plan and got the ball as quickly as they could down to the forward line instead of the trying to perfectly set up the forward play through handball. The conditions didn't warrant excessive handling of the ball. How many goals did Port get
from spillages out the back?

having said that Houli handled the ball really well.

Farmer was fine, many were worse tonight. Helbig should not be playing, it's as simple as that. Dimma needs to get over his crush and play the players who can actually contribute to a win. No knock on Helbig, he will be a great player but he shouldn't be asked to play senior footy at this stage.

Were you watching the same game?

Tottaly unproffesional by the football department as well, i mean all the port players had sweatbands on...why?

Because they prepared for the conditions, little things like that show the thought process, we were prepared for a dry night, the dew came down and we were caugght out, its the same as deciding which boots to wear.

The media darling that Jack has become has gone has gone to his head...very richo like, and that is being disrespectfull of richo
