Dismissal of "Headcase" Players

Oh sorry. I forgot that you and HBF KNOW 100% that a 17/18 year old kid couldn't possibly change

I really would have thought that this would be a pretty simple decision here:

A player who works his backside off to get himself in the best possible condition to be drafted by an AFL club.

A player who has that certain X factor, yet lets himself down by not giving himself the best chance of being drafted by an AFL club.

Once you get past the top 10, the spread of players are pretty even, and will go as deep as that particular years draft will allow it. On my estimates for 2007, the top 10-15 will be pretty good, and then after that, 16-40 could go in any order.

Even have a look at a thread that consumed this board for ages this year: Jetta vs Grigg.

Jetta was touted as a high draft pick this time last year, and went to Essendon at 18, and Grigg, who wasn't though of that highly, went the pick after him at 19.

Jetta has that natural flair and skill that most Aboriginal footballers have, yet has had some off-field problems this year, culminating in him being suspended by Essendon during the year.

Meanwhile, Grigg doesn't have that natural flair, and certainly wasn't ranked as high as Jetta last year. And finished the year in the Carlton team, looking like he will go onto bigger and better things next year.

Now I ask you, who would you prefer?

Uh oh, here we go. You know what happened last time somebody asked that :p

They estimate that a each draft pick is a 200k investment. Clubs don't just get rid of players of Collards ability after 1 year for small indescretions.

You can bet he has some serious issues.

People can change but we've tried hard enough in the past with a few and we still have Fev who just about needs a full-time minder and doesn't look like changing after nearly 10 years in the system. Character is something that should strongly be taken into account when you spend as much money as AFL clubs do on their players.

Thus it seems like the UCRT are unanimous on this one ;)

Perhaps it's because we've seen alot of the kids this year, and can pick a "headcase" from a "non-headcase", and thus can picture what sorts of problems the club might encounter should we go down the "headcase" road.

Where are we going to fit all these headcases? The irish kids coming over at the end of the week, we have to take 3 in the draft and that is that. I doubt we'll even use our PSD pick.

There is a reason we didn't pick jetta at 17 last year. Collard was a highly touted kid and he slipped to 31. Some people can turn it around, but it's highly unlikely that this kid will last in the afl. We have a good mix of players on our list. It's all about development.

Actually to be honest i think in some respects the opposite is true and it has been a real eye-opener....this year I've seen a few kids I thought would be shoo-ins to be drafted only to hear some things around the traps which makes me think that unless you are in the inner sanctum of an AFL system you would have no idea about these off-field issues (e.g. talking to TAC coaches).
