East Burwood will field a new-look line-up this season as it takes on a new division following a grand final berth in 2019.

The Rams played off in the Division 4 decider in 2019 but fell to Fairpark. East Burwood was subsequently promoted to the Division 3 competition for 2020 following league approval for its request.

But up to half of the players that took the field for the Rams in their last outing have either retired or moved on.

Leading goalkicker Adrian Gileno has retired alongside Steve Perri, while Scott Davis has crossed to the Glen Waverley Hawks. Also among the key changes are a raft of players that had returned to Knox with Brett Kay, Troy McGown, Ryan Lepore and Nathan Canning among the key names landing back at the Falcons.

East Burwood senior coach Stuart Wynd said the 2019 grand final loss wouldn’t serve a motivational purpose for his side taking on a new division due to the long lay-off between seasons and the vast change in personnel.

“That (grand final loss) was two seasons ago now,” Wynd said.

“We’ve probably got half of that side that won’t be playing come Round 1. I think out of the 22 that played there might only be 10 or 11 players that will be playing in the Round 1 side.

“That’s a pretty big turnover of players – we had a lot of retirements and we’re going to be a lot younger this year and hopefully a fair bit more exciting.”

The Rams brought in a swag of players from Premier powerhouse Balwyn ahead of 2020 headlined by two-time premiership defender Ed McCutchan, while James McCutchan, James Baren, Jacob Polka signed on where they’ll look to establish themselves in the senior side.

They’ve also added 2016 Balwyn premiership player Shaun MacDonald who will bolster the midfield.

Meanwhile, fellow Balwyn recruit Matt North has since moved on while young forward Hannin Mundy has linked with Division 1 outfit East Ringwood.

“We think we recruited pretty well for last season – we picked up four players from Balwyn and a few others that we think are going to replace those guys and hopefully fill their shoes,” Wynd said.

“Those players (that retired) were 30-plus age whereas the players we’ve picked up are around that 25-year-old mark.

“All our young players that played in that grand final were 22 years old, and they’re 24 now, and we’re hoping they’re coming into their best footy.”

2019 Division 4 competition best and fairest Matt Mariani is also set to go around again, but he’ll be among a refreshed midfield group according to Wynd, as his side takes on Division 3.

“Our midfield’s certainly going to look a lot different this year – I don’t think anyone that played through our midfield in that grand final team will be going through there except Matt Mariani,” he said.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge of going up (to Division 3), it’s not going to be easy but I think we’re going to competitive.”

East Burwood opens its season at home against the Whitehorse Pioneers in a night match on April 10.

Thank you. Didn’t expect Gileno to retire. They’re going to be very young!

Great, do we know venues and times yet ?

Details of First Practice Game
Sunday 14th March v Ashwood at Wantirna Reserve, Wantirna South. I think that is Camel Corner.
Under 19's at 10am with Reserves at 12pm and Seniors at 2pm.

Great to get back to Local Footy. Rams u19's won comfortably. Reserves with a few u19's playing won by a few goals. Seniors lost by a few goals. Ashwood looked bigger and won many contests due to their physicality. Rams came home and looked fitter. A really good hit out for all. Great to see so many smiles on faces. I will add I did noticed a few Donvale people watching the game. Dunno if you can take much away from the game though.

Rams this weeks practice matches 3 games at Koonung West Reserve, Springfield Road, Blackburn North.
10 am Under 19's, 12pm Reserves and 2pm Seniors all games against Bentleigh Football Club

East Burwood won all three games. Seniors was only 3 quarters due to Bentleigh having a few players unavailable. Solid hit out. Next weeks Practice match against Forest Hill is to be at East Burwood on the Saturday.

Rams U19's will play in the Premier League this year.

Any idea what Premier league sides will be not fielding u19,s this season. Also heard U19,s will be 16 players each on the ground, not sure of number on the bench. And U20 players can play, not sure how many allowed per club.

Looking at the Fixture it appears Doncaster and Doncaster East do not have a u19 teams. Surrey Park and East Burwood are in there as they have competitive squads and to make it 10 team division. Div 1 and 2 U 19's are only 8 teams. This looks to be the norm going forward as some teams will field U19's and some won't. If you look through the juniors some clubs don't have u17's so they will struggle to field u19's next year. As for players and bench numbers I have no idea. I will try to find out or maybe someone else will add to this.

Doncaster East playing U19,s in D2 looking at the fixture.Realise there will be difficulties about 4 or 5 away games approx where these sides will be playing at different venues to their senior group but I think a good move.Perhaps Friday night games could be looked at for some of these games especially at East Burwood with those new lights.

As I understand it, at the moment Whitehouse Council will only allow 2 night games a season at grounds that have lights. It would be great if this could be increased, but I do understand what that would mean for local residents.

Sorry missed Donny East in D2.

16 players on the field.

Unlimited number of U20 players but they have to have been registered with the club (or junior affiliate) in previous years - ie you can’t go and recruit 20yos who’ve never played for you.

My understanding in the past it was no more then 6 U20 players in a team, not sure what it is now but you have said unlimited. So for example you are saying that say Vermont have 20 players over 19 but U20 and registered within their junior club all these players can play U19,s if no spots for them in the seniors. Not sure I like that one if true.BUT realise it can work the other way and lets use Doncaster as an example as they are struggling to field a U19 side and it seems they will not be and this could be beneficial for them perhaps.

That’s the way I understand it. Basically allows anybody who was due to play U19s last year to play U19s this season.

A lot of clubs struggling for numbers.

It’s basically an U20 competition but the top agers have to have been with your club prior to this year.

If you haven’t had 19s for over 3 years that will be of no benefit. How will they have been previously registered. May help some but not those that have an annual battle.

The whole situation has been an issue that has been mounting for years. But at least the private school footy programs are at all time high levels. Must be extremely satisfying for those at the AFL & AFL Victoria.

Ridiculously low salary caps handing players to VAFA, while the school systems football that feed the elite in the same competition get stronger each year.

Who would have thought......... Such visionaries running the game & yet our league accept this situation. It will only get worse.

Realise U19,s has been a real issue for a long time and will most likely will continue.Have been told Mitcham have 36 players so basically R1 at least 12 of those players will not get a game.

Fully understand where you are coming from.As you most likely know I am involved with Mitcham Cricket Club and junior wise we now have nearly all our sides playing RDCA as junior cricket west of Mitcham on a Saturday morning has just about been killed off in BHRDCA junior cricket because of private school cricket.

This Saturday 27th is the final practice match for East Burwood V Forest Hill FC at East Burwood Reserve. Reserves at 10am followed by seniors. no u19's.

The private school issue isn’t the AFL’s fault. They’re just so incredibly flush with cash. They have more money than they know what to do with.

It results in endless development of facilities, shitloads of “sporting scholarships” and “staff” of ex AFL coaches on bulging six figure pay.

We simply have a government who keeps pouring more and more money into private schools despite the enormous fees they collect from parents

Bunk was more making a point that those within the AFL wouldn’t be upset with the current situation given their own background. Boys club, private schools, etc.

The whole setup is very detrimental to non private school VAFA grass roots junior football and has a significant flow on to senior football.
