It was a penalty, Salah also made a meal of it and is a serial cheat. They're not mutually exclusive.

Oh, and ****ing hell, "road scholar." :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

#obsession.

Dermot Gallagher disagrees with you:

There's also literally been dozens of challenges that Salah has ridden without going to ground. One happened just in the recent Champions League tie where a Porto defender attempted to bring him down outside the box. He simply isn't a serial diver, at least not compared to the rest of the league.

If Cardiff got exactly the same penalty you wouldn't have complained one bit. Absolutely not a dive, quite laughable to suggest a player who is being held in the headlock and wrestled to the ground can be accused of diving. Infact your golden boy Harry Kane (one of the biggest cheats in the game) did the very same thing in the WC for England against Tunisia. Wonder if you were as outraged by that "dive" as you were over this one.

Obsession? What? Mate I said it was a penalty in the OP. You don't need to be a road scholar to figure that out.

If Salah was playing AFL it would have been holding the ball twice over. Salah kept his feet for a bloody long time
Round the neck and 50m pen.

There’s no reason not to keep his feet. He had arms around him but wasn’t thrown to fall over like he did

lol, in the headlock and wrestled to the ground. Free kick in AFL let alone EPL. Absolutely laughable to complain about a player going down who has been wrestled to the ground with his opponent having him in a headlock while he's trying to control the ball and actually play football. Of course an opponent grappling you will affect your balance, Salah did pretty well to stay on his feet for as long as he did after being virtually molested by Morrision. Pretty much every player goes down in those exact circumstances, I don't remember too much outrage when Kane went down after being wrestled to the ground at the WC against Tunisia for his "dive".

2 things.

1. If it was paid against us, I don’t think anyone would complain...both our supporters and the whinging mob.
2. If it wasn’t in the box, he would have been paid the foul a good 5-10 seconds before he “dived”.

To me it was a foul but also a full on dive at the end of it to make sure it was seen.
Atkinson was in a very good position to call it a foul virtually straight away. But no, he waited and waited. What's he waiting for, too scared to make a decision? Salah is thinking, **** this, i'm getting man handled,he's not giving it,so i'm going down.
He forced that gutless ref to make the call for what was a stonewall penalty.

It was a penalty. However you can still make the most of the contact even if it’s a foul, which I think is the point being made about Salah.
And that's fine. I'm fine with what he did. Because he is being fouled so make sure the ref has to make a decision.

I don't condone no contact and diving. But if there is contact then yeah make sure the ref knows about it. It's just the way football is in today's world.

You guys are 100% right. He's being fouled, was the contact enough to make him fall? No. But it's a pen, as many of you have pointed out. There is an issue in football that encourages diving. Atkinson sees the foul, but doesn't blow it Salah has to "dive" and then the ref can justify to himself that it's a penalty. It's a major flaw in football, across all levels.

You see it all the time, if the contact isn't enough to put you on the ground then majority of refs don't give a foul. The fix is simple, give the foul as soon as the contact is enough, especially in the box. He made the most of the contact, absolutely I can't deny that, but if the ref blows his whistle after the first 7 seconds of him being held then Mo has no reason to go down.

But then again if that happened we wouldn't all be having this spirited and good natured debate would we? ;)

That was a penalty for Salah, but he had to flop to the ground to actually get it which defeats the purpose & makes it seem not genuine.

But good on him for taking the heat off this absolute nonce

Lots to talk about.

Bradesmaen for a person who constantly shit cans his own club, you're now seventh. Surely you've got to be happy with that? Smashing United 4-0 at any time is huge. You guys had a bit of a shit run but have turned out round with some big results recently.

United are in big strife. They need a complete clean out. It would be a huge statement for Ole to drop names like DDG, Pogba, Smalling, Lukaku to show you can't keep wearing the shirt if you play like garbage. They're going to get spanked by City either way, but it would show nobody is immune/bigger than the club.

I genuinely believe Pogba is a big part of the issue. Brilliant when he can be bothered, but terrible when he's not in the mood and it affects the whole team. He should be sold. He thinks he's bigger than the club.

Gary Neville's interview was spot on. I think Ole can do a good job, but he needs to kill the weeds and bring in his own players who want to play for the club and not just collect a pay cheque each week.

Arsenal, ugh. They'll never change.

This.

It was a penalty when you consider he was manhandled, Morrison gave the referee an excuse. He should not have had his hands/arms etc all over Salah like that.

But nobody, nobody on here can honestly say that if somebody was holding you like that, you'd theatrically fall the way Salah did. It was a foul, and a penalty, but the way he obtained it was through a dive.

I don't understand how Liverpool fans struggle to see this.
Nobody struggles to see it. Salah purposely went to ground to make sure the ref had to make the decision. 90% of players do this. There is a massive agenda out there against Salah but who cares... he keeps scoring and playing well and is loved by Muslims, Egyptians and Liverpool fans all over the world.

More power to him.

Still a cheat though

Everybody cheats in football. I watched Cardiff cheat the entire game until they were behind. Then it was the opposite. We started cheating.

Time wasting, feigning injuries etc.
Pretty sure not everyone does. There’s levels of it at least, and Salah is on the high end of it. Least Liverpool fans can do is own that and not make lame excuses

There were plenty of people refuting it.

I like Salah and love the way Liverpool play under Klopp.

It's kind of like a chicken/egg scenario. If players manhandle and the attacker doesn't go down, then there is no penalty. Rock and a hard place.

Salah could’ve done the Macarena on the way down for all I care, as long as the referee recognises he’s been illegally impeded (which he was) and makes the correct decision (which he did).

If he’s simulating contact that isn’t there that’s a different thing entirely imo. That’s my personal interpretation of ‘diving’ and that’s typically when you’ll see the ref produce a yellow.

If referees won’t pay a foul until the player hits the floor then I have no problem with players from any club ‘going down easily’ in response to being held/hacked/wrestled if it means the correct decision is made.

Funny that it’s always that side of the challenge that is framed as cheating, and not the defender illegally holding/pulling the shirt/hacking the shins of the attacker to stop them from having a shot on goal.

See above.

As an aside, do you think people are consistent in their outrage to players diving/going down easily etc?

Absolutely. You see it in football all the time, where someone gets fouled and stays on their feet to try to score but they miss. Then supporters moan, just go down, win the penalty! So supporters moan either way. Unfortunately football has become so results driven, life and death kinda stuff that we all want our team to win at almost any cost.

I dont want to see diving to win penalties that are not there as much as the next guy. That penalty was there though and Salah is just making sure the ref pays it. I have no issue with it. If there was no foul at all and he spectacularly dives to the ground, then yeah, I have issues with that.

For me if you choose to fall to the ground, whether someone has touched you or not, you've taken a dive.

Contact isn't necessarily a foul, and for me you should do your best to stay upright until the contact us so severe that you can't stay upright.
