Squad list

MVP: Jack Payne

Not the best Championships for the Lions, they finished second bottom on the table with 2-3 record. It was a tale of two halves, winning their first two matches against the Gold Coast and Northern Territory, but followed that with three straight losses. Probably goes to show that while the top talent might be good, they didn't have the depth of the other teams.

Round 1

Brisbane 5.8 38 def Gold Coast 4.7 31

A particularly low scoring match, 168cm small forward Jake Warren kicked two goals while highly rated tall Connor Ballenden struggled to have an impact before going off injured. Best on ground for the Lions was key defender Jack Payne, at either 193cm or 195cm depending on who you believe. He finished with 18 disposals, a third of them being rebound-50s.

Round 2

Brisbane 11.12 78 def by Tasmania 15.12 102

This game was rescheduled by a cyclone, and ended up being played at the end when Brisbane were in a bit of a slump. And once again, Jack Payne was their best performer with his composure and clean skills. In the second half, Ben Sloan (189cm) and Jack Clayton (184cm) were both moved from the back lines into more attacking roles in the forward half and kicked 3 goals between them to make the scoreboard more respectable.

Round 3

Brisbane 16.8 104 def Northern Territory 8.6 54

Against the NT, you usually expect the opposition talls to dominate and 193cm forward Billy Drake did just that with three goals as the deepest forward. While also providing a strong contest for 178cm small forward William Johnson to kick three of his own. Jack Payne once again featured in the bests, showing off his intercept work without a direct opponent of his own.

Round 4

Brisbane 8.10 58 def by Sydney 13.11 89

The talls for Brisbane performed strongly this week, 199cm Connor Ballenden had 17 disposals and 24 hitouts and was backed up nicely by 198cm Jack Tomkinson with 10 disposals and 16 hitouts. Ballenden added a goal up forward, while Tomkinson played down back when not in the ruck, forming a nice combination. 177cm Brock Aston led the way through the midfield with 19 touches.

Round 5

Brisbane 7.11 53 def by GWS 8.9 57

In the final match, a few players showed off their vesatility. Payne proved he could play on both tall and medium sized forwards, Ballenden showed he was equally adept both through the ruck and up forward while Sloan again swung forward to good effect. Underaged forward/midfielder Darcy Marsh was best on ground though.
