When is the AFL going to wake up and start a division 2 competition. What the league needs is for 2 divisions off 12 teams. This way teams like Fitzroy could have survived in a division 2.Also sell division 2 rights off to optus. You could also bring in teams from Hobart,Launceston,West Sydney,Canberra, Darwin,Bendigo,Albury and Cairns and make this a truely national competition.Even more teams from Adealaide or Perth wouldn't hurt.Let the strong survive and scrap your salary caps and drafts. The AFL will only get weaker unless it can expand. How Tasmania doesn't have a team is a absolute joke.I've never been to Tasmania by the way but they have produced some great players. If we can't have 2 divisions the i say Kangaroos to Canberra and Hawthorn to Tasmania Or Richmond to Tasmania because if they stay in Melbourne they will go broke. There is simply not enough money or fans to keep 10 teams alive in Victoria, just go ask Fitzroy what they think. Also getting rid of Waverley will turn out to be the AFL's biggest mistake.Just like it seems hiring Wayne Jackson will be aswell.

a good idea at face value but the Carl the problem is that it takes around 12 million dollars a year to run a footy club at AFL level.

Places like Cairns and Albury and Hobart just don't have that kind of money.

Besides we already have a second tier of Aussie Rules in Australia, its just that this second tier is organised around local leagues.

cheers

The only thing i agree with you here is that selling Waverley is a huge mistake.
First you tell us we need a second division then you tell us 10 sides in Victoria cant survive, well which one is it, if there isnt enough money to go around how could we possibly finance a second division? Whos going to pay for Bendigo to fly to Tassie and Perth etc! I love Tassie and its a great Footy State but im a realist, i travel to Tassie alot and they just couldnt afford there own AFL licence, there best bet is to have someone like the mighty Hawks playing a couple of games a year down there. Cheers

So you are suggesting we hang to a white elephant that no games are going to be played at.

Wake up and smell the roses, the venue is a shambles, has no capacity to be upgraded to suit corporate style entertainment in the same fashion as the G or Colonial, and that is where all of our precious Melbourne clubs obtain the bulk of their funds.

So think before you go off half cocked jumpoing on the AFL bashing wagon.

The clubs are spewing they can't sell the thing, as it will provide valuable income for them at a time hwen they are struggling.

And I now you will say this is a stop gap measure but there will always be something that comes along that proviced some form of cash windfall in a business sucvh as the AFL, the most lucrative code in Australia.

Whether it be new club licences, new television sponsorship, new corporate dollars, internet rights, these lump sums will continue to come in as it is the nature of big business.

Waverley is antiquated and those people who claim to love football so much out there can pay 4.40 for their ticket to the G to watch ALL of the Melb clubs run around OR keep that stinking ground and watch six, seven of eight Melbourne teams run around.

The choice is frigging obvious

A 2nd Comp!

I dunno about that. There isnt enough talent out there for a 2nd league!

The nsl are considering this for the league which is most likely going to happen next season!

Well a second division side would need less funds to run the club, that's why there in the 2nd division because at this stage in time they can't compete with the big clubs. But once they get bigger themselves they will most probably move up a division. Also more interest in teams at the bottom of the league who may be relegated.Plus teams that may be struggling financially will have somewhere to go until they rebuild, instead of just going bankrupt and never seeing again.
Also on the waverley issue.Melbourne has 3.5 million people with 9 teams(forget geelong). They have 3 grounds at the moment all within a few kilometres of each other. Our only other ground is out by itself in one of the fastest growing areas in the whole of Australia.Yes Waverley might need some kind of upgrade. But with all this tv money going around it would have only needed a fraction of that.Yes the AFL doesn't regret it yet but in 15-20 years down the track the new managers will think the managers of these days were idiots. The ground is only 30 years old. Also don't forget the amount of fans that have been lost to AFL footy because of the closure, not everyone live 30mins from the city.

Carl...BSA is right,
with the advent of the AFL. we NOW have two second tier State competitions
the SANFL and Westar rules.

Down from those we have the NTFL, TFL, AFL Q {qld } VFL and SFL
. what the two premier state competitions cant handle eventually find their level in these leagues.

Are you suggesting we field teams from all these comps in a nother 2cnd tier ?

I see the merits in allowing Fitzroy to survive, but the teams you want to bring in??

Tasmania can't support two teams and the richest club outside the AFL is Southport in Queensland, not a Cairns club (although there is a strong AFL comp up there).

Where is the money though. The AFL won't give up their o/s trips to major supporting events to give the clubs money.

My god, some people don't think when coming up with supposed utopian competitions.
So let's say we went to 2 divisions. What then of the salary cap and the draft. Do we keep them? The draft would be a real tricky one. What happens for the 2nd division clubs? Surely you can't have the top young kids going to 2nd rate leagues. And if the draft is restricted to the 1st division sides, then surely the gap would just continue to widen, the relegated clubs would take 1 season to get promoted again, and the promoted clubs would get dropped the next year. And then we look at the salary cap? Do we keep it? If so, we could have the ridiculous situation of clubs with strong support bases and plenty of money going to the 2nd division. Look at the last few years. Collingwood and Brisbane would have got the arse. You might think thats funny, but what would happen to footy in Queensland if ther was no AFL Division one side? It would die in the arse. Let's face it, North and the Bulldogs are 2nd division sides, at least in terms of support, yet due to the system they would not be, and far more important clubs to the league in terms of support would get relegated. So we go with no salary cap and draft? Then we would quickly see player payments inflate rapidly, and a few clubs buy up all the top players and begin to dominate. Look at the European soccer leagues. Money rules, only 2 or 3 clubs ever win the league. Does that make for a good competition? Hardly. If anything, it would send clubs broke far quicker, as the pressure would be on to put a competitive team on the paddock, meaning increased costs, while the revenue would at best stay the same.

While I think the idea of a national 2nd division league is a good one from the point of view of the smaller cities which can't support AFL clubs, I would think that a system without relegation and promotion would work better, i.e another league. Maybe a league with teams from Tassie (maybe 2), Gold Coast, Cairns, Darwin, Canberra, a couple of Victorian country areas (such as Ballarat and Gippsland), with the possible incentive of entry into the AFL if results and support justified it. But I acknowledge that it would be bloody expensive to run such a competition, and would probably require AFL support to help fund it, as I doubt it would get the crowds required. I think the current setup with the state leagues being the 2nd tier works well. The only thing I wouldn't mind seeing is some form of champions competition, maybe a knockout between the 8 champions from each state league (although the probable setup in Tassie next year would make it hard)with the final played as a curtain raiser to the Grand final. Who really gives a shit about some Victorian under 18's comp?
