Two rivalry games this week. Kew and Hawthorn have an emnity going back many years to when the Hawks first applied to join the VAFA. No love lost here. I' tipping the Bears.

Monash Gryphons v Elsternwick. A friendly rivalry here. The Wicks play ECR pretty well. Games always played in good spirit. The Gryphs, just.

Prahran Assumption to prevail over Mt Lilydale. Probably give the visitors a toweling methinks.

UHS VU v Power House. The House, for sure.

Ivanhoe v Yarra Valley. The visitors have learnt to win away this year and will run the Hoes hard. I expect a tough game.

West Brunswick v Albert Park. Tough one this. Depending which team the Falcons bring, I'm leaning to the home team.
Have a great, injury free weekend gentlemen. :))

Progressive 33 out of 54

Tips round 10
Prahran 60 points
House 15 points
Yarra 50 points
AP 10 points
Kew 20 points
Gryphons 23 points

Yarra Valley over Hoes by 45 Pts (Some on this forum will give Ivanhoe a real chance of an upset at Hoe Park; however, I am not one of them. The Bushrangers destroyed Albert Park away from home last round and impressively finished off the game with nine goals in the final term. I sincerely believe they are every bit as good as Prahran and their fitness is arguably better than all in the section. Ivanhoe, like the Gryphs, simply do not have the firepower to match the top 2 and will fall well short).

The hoes played a little better today and showed a little more intensity. Yarra are clearly a good side - but I thought we matched them in all areas to take the points.

The big plus was 3 x senior guys played well in the twos returning from injury. Just need the captain of the ones to return soon....has only played one game and kicked 7......but he is soft. :p

Chump.

Went to watch Hawthorn and Kew yesterday - forget all the talk about the ressie umps, these two that the ammo's sent in the 1s were disgraceful. Never in my life have I ever thought umpires directly effect the result of the game, that was until yesterday.

Elsternwick Back 6

Gee the EAFC back six looked very tight again on Saturday - miserly - especially the bloke who looks like Kepler Bradley

Great win by the Hoes against a more fancied side. Was great to see our fellas winning the footy in tight and slugging it out. Not a high scoring game, both side's missed chances, so goals were at a premium.

Can only see Ivanhoe improving having seen the players on the sidelines injured etc.

I don't know much about YV and injuries etc, but I think they lost a few during the game. Was good to see them in the rooms for a beer too.

Fair to say the top 4 is probably locked in now... fingers crossed, so should be a battle for 5th!

nearly forgot to mention how good Francis was. playing his bullocking half forward role, was a bit of Aaron Hammil about him.

Witnessed the massacre at Toorak Park and like many others was disgusted with Mt. Lilydales' onfield conduct. Understand they have many injuries but no excuse for the completely undisciplined display they put on. Getting thrashed is one thing but at least show a little dignity during the process. The umps must have suffered with whistleburn given the no. of downfields given for verbals and hits after the kick. D4 beckons for this club unless they can re-group and get their act together but from what I saw it's a big ask.....

Look for the positives Torp - at least it wasn't at the scumdale sh*t farm.......

Mr Chump,

You always have some much LOVE for the captain. Is he your BUDDY?

where is BUDDY LOVE????

Mitch - have you been on the Crack Pipe again? The final 4 is far from done yet - IMHO.

Prahran Assumption 10 0 0 40 229.04
Yarra Valley 8 2 0 32 178.67
Monash Gryphons 7 3 0 28 108.29
Ivanhoe 6 4 0 24 107.61
UHS-VU 5 5 0 20 102.68
Kew 5 5 0 20 96.37
Elsternwick 4 6 0 16 83.70
Hawthorn 4 6 0 16 73.76
Albert Park 3 7 0 12 91.23
Power House 3 7 0 12 77.30
Mt Lilydale 3 7 0 12 66.70
West Brunswick 2 8 0 8 72.27

Still 8 games to go and some teams just starting to get thier acts together.

* Massive game at Kew this week and is a real '8 pointer' for the Hoe and Kew boys.

* UHS-VU , Elsternwick and Hawthorn all in very important games for 4th and 5th spot chances.

* AP's and the House - can not drop another one you would think or it could be all over for any finals action. That being said both these sides played finals last year and if they get on a roll - could come flying home.

* Mt L's and West Brunny - don't look like they can get up - on current form - but I don't have the courage to say 'all done' with 8 games still to go.

There is still ALOT to happen in this season .......

Chump.

I reckon top 4 will stay the same. Could be wrong though, as you say there's plenty of footy left.

possibly 1 to many crack pipes... but we'll see!

I was one of those Quassi that gave the Hoes a real chance last week although it's easy to say that after the event. Yarra are a good side but my read on them is that they are significantly below Prahran at this point. Kew and Elsternwick are coming, Uni High have the wobbles and Mt Lilydale have some real worries.

Still a long way to go and for the Hoes it is a tough draw but we are in their punching (metaphorically of course).

Progressive 39 from 54.
Monash Gryphons v Elsternwick - 34 points.
Ivanhoe v Yarra Valley - 56 points.
UHS-VU v Power House - 14 points.
West Brunswick v Albert Park - 9 points.
Hawthorn v Kew - 3 point.
Prahran Assumption v Mt Lilydale - 87 points.

Progressive 42 from 60.

Consistently tipping 50% at this stage and some results shocked me on the weekend. Well done to Ivanhoe. They did what most teams would have thought very unlikely. With only 8 games till finals this will instill some confidence in the 2nd tier teams. Will be a great week for footy with two very interesting games that I couldn't split so have two matches of the round this week.

Yarra Valley vs Mt Lilydale - 88 points. Yarra Valley will be determined to get back on the winning list. They struggled up forward last week with their main goal kickers unable get their regular big scores but was due to Ivanhoe limiting the options out of the middle. Mt Lilydale have struggled with the climb in grade and will be lucky not to be relegated at seasons end. They have a good core group but the bottom 6-8 players is where they are let down.

Albert Park vs Prahran Assumption - 55 points. I'm sick of commenting on how good Prahran are. I would have been interested to see how they would have gone in D2 this year with this team. Just waiting for someone to knock them off their perch but it wont be this week. Albert Park suffer from the same problem as Mt Lilydale in the bottom half of their list needs to improve before they go anywhere.

UHS-VU vs Monash Gryphons - 8 points. MATCH OF THE ROUND 1. Very important game for both teams. UHS wanting to stay in the 5 and the Gryphons wanting to get a game clear. Will be some interesting matchups with Watts v Baxter, Wells v Kirk and Pearce v Molloy. This game could go either way and noticed they are playing on a neutral ground at Princes Park(surely not the main ground :) ). Due to UHS inconsistency I have to go with Gryphs as they've been a bit more consistent and I don't know which UHS team will show up.

West Brunswick vs Hawthorn - 23 points. A win to Hawthorn here will really put them in contention for finals. They have a good run home from here not having to play Prahran or Yarra Valley again. Will be smarting from the loss last week and should account easily for West Brunswick who have really failed since bursting out of the barriers.

Power House vs Elsternwick - 34 points. I said from the beginning Elsternwick are slow starters and they are now starting to hit their straps with the likes of Grace and Healy being regular performers. Whilst I think they will shape the finals they have a slightly tougher run so may just miss out. Power House needs more goal kickers than almost 40 year old Eddo who doesn't look like slowing down. They also need to stop kicking to Burside every time on a kick out or free kick. It get's predictable and whilst he is a gun a simple game plan like that is easier to stop.

Kew vs Ivanhoe - 10 points. MATCH OF THE ROUND 2. I could almost rewrite my other game of the round here. Very important game for both teams. Kew on the verge of top 5 and Ivanhoe wanting to get a game clear. Will be some interesting matchups with Brough v Collins and not sure who Ivanhoe will play on Brazzle(Tonge?). Both teams are in great form and it is hard to split the two. Even though it's a Kew home game I have to go with Ivanhoe after last weeks effort.

Yarra Valley over Mt Lilydale - 40 points, Yarra may have a few injuries, but will be too good at home.

PA's over the AP's - the two blues still the stand out team in the comp, but have a gut feeling that AP's will be in this for a while. PA's by 23 points.

I like the Gryphs as a team, but UHS-VU at home is a tougher gig. Flip.... Gryphs by 8 points.

West Brunny in an upset over the higher placed Hawks. The hoes were very lucky to get a win against West Brunny and as such I will tip them at home to upset the more fancied opponents. WB's by 10 points.

House V Wicks - massive game - if the House lose - they are done for the year me thinks. The Wicks can play some very nice footy when switched on....flip...Wicks by two points.

Kew v Hoes - Kew in a close one. Kew are playing wel & it's at home ....lets keep the run home interesting. Kew by a point.

Good luck all - Chump.

Power House vs Elsternwick - 34 points. I said from the beginning Elsternwick are slow starters and they are now starting to hit their straps with the likes of Grace and Healy being regular performers. Which Grace? Kepler or everyones favourite Scotty?

PA's over the AP's - the two blues still the stand out team in the comp, but have a gut feeling that AP's will be in this for a while. PA's by 23 points.

I hear AP have a few out/unavailable, could be a cricket score kicked.

Round 10 Preview

Gryphs over Wicks by 21 Pts (Elsternwick will be buoyed by their better performances over recent weeks and always find something extra for the Murphy-Wells Cup, however, Monash simply do not lose at ECR to teams below them and you can’t see that trend ceasing here. Expect Kye Cherian to amongst the Gryphons best).
House over UHS-VU by 13 Pts (I will undoubtedly get this one wrong, but how could anyone select Uni High with any confidence at present? Powerhouse have not been much better, but there is a finals berth available for whichever team 5th to 12th that finds some form late in the season. Picking who that will be is difficult thing. Paul Edwards played well up forward and down back last week and should do enough to stretch the UHS defence. The combine will look to Patrick St John for some inspiration but will fall just short).
West over AP by 3 Pts (Strange to call a wooden spoon battle match of the round, but this has the potential to be the most passionate affair of the weekend. The loser – especially if the Magpies – has one foot in D4, yet the winner still has realistic, yet faint finals hopes. As soon as I get off West, they will win, but I doubt anyone in the VAFA would bet ‘London to a Brick’ on either of these two. Willy Wood to get the home side over the line just…).
Hawks over Kew by 6 Pts (the third ‘flip of the coin’ for the round. We will see just how good the Bears are tomorrow, as if they can comfortably beat the Hawks, they are a real ‘smoky’ for the finals. Ivanhoe will most likely lose meaning the winner of this will be equal 4th and right in the mix. Hawthorn may bring in some bigger bodied players in order to win the contested ball and may have to put Richard Ogge forward to secure the points. The Rathmines Rd faithful on ‘Sill Hill’ may do just enough to see the home team salute.
Four Blues over Rams by 55 Pts (If Prahran take this one seriously they may win by 100, but I feel they may use this game to rest a few of the weary and allow some of their emerging youngsters to acquire a taste of senior football. Even with that being the case they should win comfortably. Matty ‘Cardinal’ Pell to be best afield).

Round 10 Review

1/6 (36/60 cumulative) has me contemplating giving the ‘pseudo journo’ game away for good. However, that is not my style and all I can say that one has to move on.

Frankly, I am more confused than ever about D3. The key to this season is selecting those teams that are hitting form, but the trick is predicting who and when that may be. The two biggest upsets were unquestionably at ECR & Hoe Park. The Gryphons and Bushrangers lost on the same weekend for the first time this year breathing new life into the double chance. Full credit to Ivanhoe and Elsternwick who handed their respective oppositions a football lesson against the odds. I remarked last week that I gave little chance to the Hoes and if this were played again I would most likely do the same, however, never take away the old fashioned terms of ‘guts’ and ‘determination’ when it comes to winning contested footy. Ivanhoe’s defence was stoic all day and Damon Wood proved elusive up forward. Yarra Valley had a day they would like to forget and will no doubt look to atone in the near future. Considering the Hoes could only beat West by 13 points two weeks ago makes their performance all the more remarkable and with the likes of Eilan Healy firing, they are the most likely to oust the Gryphs for the third place. Speaking of Monash, to say their performance was lamentable was one thing, but that would take away far too much from the Wicks who played the percentages and adhered to a rigid gameplan of accountability and risk. I have not rated Elsternwick all year, but they have certainly turned things around in the month of June and with Damian Richardson starring across half back they may be the one to slip into fifth spot (will need to improve their percentage though). A twenty-eight goal turnaround in the space of 7 days should come as even a surprise to the ardent Uni High fans over the years as the magnitude of their destruction of Powerhouse was so brutal. This was the UHS of April that had many pundits in raptures and if they can keep this up, they they’ll surely be a challenger. The Bears are the final club that continues to elude my senses. How they deposed of the Hawks with such ease indicates that they must be taken seriously as a finals threat as well. Where that leaves the Hawks is anyone’s guess. The Falcons beat West in another one I misread after they powered away in the second half thanks to the likes of Nathan Dallas & Dylan Muscat. Too many teams probably stand between them and the five, but who knows? Oh yes, and a team from the Municipality of Stonnington managed to fall over the line against the Rams by 162 points. It was tough work picking that one…

Round 11 Preview

Yarra over Rams by 92 Pts (Perhaps last week was the loss the Bushrangers had to have – a la Paul Keating – but if they have their kicking boots on, this could get ugly. Tough luck for the Mountain Men, playing the top two in consecutive weeks and it’s not like their percentage can afford to drop any further. Whatever the margin in this match, you can bet your life Stoney put his chargers through hell on the track, so I expect Yarra to come out firing and have the game in the bag by quarter time. Xavier Nowicki to be prominent).

Prahran over AP by 53 Pts (The Four Blues have yet to have had a ‘down’ game all year and this seems to be the difference between the Top 2. What motivates them week in week out is the secret potion all clubs are striving for, but no doubt they have the best depth going around so they are able to rotate weary bodies with much aplomb. The Falcons had a strong away win last weekend but are eons behind the Blues in talent. Surely they cannot provide an upset, but after last week, what do any of us know?).

UHS-VU over Monash by 2 Pts (Who knows which Uni High will turn up? The power finals side we saw last round or the rank relegation threatened outfit that played for them for most of June. For that matter, Monash have been out of form lately themselves and cannot afford to drop this one. A win to the Gryphs will place them three wins plus percentage ahead of 5th, so the stakes are high. Monash will be buoyed by the return of Dan Baxter across half-back. It has been no coincidence that their two worst performances for the season have been when he is not present. Wells v Kirk will be a crucial battle. Neither likes having their colours lowered so I expect a Carey vs. Jackovich style nullification. Therefore, like most contests the game will be won by the victor of the contested ball, an area that Monash were crucially poor at, against the Wicks. UHS just in this crucial ‘8 pointer’, but this was a flip of the coin in the extreme!).

West over Hawks by 3 Pts (Another one that is impossible to pick. All logic sits with the Hawks knocking off the cellar-dwellers, but I have selected the Magpies for weeks now and as soon as I get off, they will undoubtedly win. Both teams struggled to kick a score last week so on the current D3 logic, expect a shootout 21 goals to 20! Chris Germon to be amongst the best for West).

Wicks over the House by 21 Pts (I am now unofficially a Wicks fan after canning them all season, so expect them to start losing again. However, if they can stop Paul Edwards – or at least his supply – they will have no trouble here. Powerhouse are heading for the dreaded relegation zone in a hurry, whereas the Wicks could out of the five only by % come Saturday night, something beyond even their wildest dreams a month back. Declan Healy to star for the visitors).

Kew over Ivanhoe by 3pts (What a game to finish round 12! A month back and the Hoe’s would’ve pencilled in a victory, but the Bears – like the Wicks – are a team on the rise and may do just enough at home to win. The Hoe’s were magnificent in defence against Yarra Valley, but may not be able to contain the likes of Andrew Brazzale who is the centrepiece of an emerging potency up forward for the Bears. Should be a thriller and once again is an ‘8 pointer’ for the away side. Mick Cochrane to be best afield).

Good luck to all

Now we are starting to get to the business end of the season and a couple of interesting game sthat could shape the ladder in weeks to come:

Round 11.

Yarra Valley vs Mt Lilydale
Albert Park vs Prahran
UHS-VU vs Monash Gyphons
West Brunswick vs Hawthorn
Power House vs Elsternwick
Kew vs Ivanhoe

Which Grace? Kepler or everyones favourite Scotty?

I was referring to Dave. Scotty has been back only a few weeks from what I've heard so he is obviously making a difference and getting a couple of goals. Dave must like playing with his brother as his form appears to have been better since Scotty is back.

Yarra Valley 100 points
Prahran 72 points
Monash Gryphons 12 points
West Brunswick 14 points
Elsternwick 23 points
Ivanhoe 21 points

The last 4 games are very tough to pick.

Ivanhoe have no chance after the mental scarring from seeing that messed up shit on the TV Thursday night during meals. I beleive it was a women giving birth in a bath... or litteraly shitting her guts. either way, the whole club will be suffering the effect of that.

Yes Chump, the cotton wool is very soft. Just saving myself for a little cameo finals appearance, along with a number of others hopefully. Any chance of you getting out on the track soon old man?

I must say it was rather difficult finishing my lasagne after it.
