Getting exciting now that praccy games are just around the corner. I'll have a crack at the ladder (and will most likely fail).
1. St Francis - Had a very strong season last year in the seniors and reserves. Have a new oval now and an affiliation with a junior club meaning 19's which will no doubt help to move up the grades. Doesn't look like they've lost many and a few clearances have come in. Whether they win it all or not I don't see them in D4 in 2020.
2. Latrobe Uni - Very disappointing year finishing on 1 win in D3. Must have lost a lot of players as happens with uni teams. Have a new oval and great facilities which will help with recruiting and will probably get some players back chasing a flag. When Eley Park were relegated and La Trobe were meant to as well as they finished 2nd last they ended up making the prelim the next year in D3 so they can bounce back.
3. South Melbourne - Strong start to the season in 2018 and fell away late. Will win games at home but need to start winning away. Have some strong under 19's coming through that will help. Ladder position based solely on winning home games. Not 100% committed to them in finals.
4. Albert Park - Another team that had a disappointing year in D3. Another team with the chance of getting players back that are chasing flags. Interesting to see their reserves were close to finals last year whilst seniors had 1 win (very similar to South Melbourne coming down from D3).
5. South Mornington - The big question is can they be consistent through all home and away games. They went 8 wins from 9 games in the middle of the season so they can win games but can they do it from round 1 - round 18. I have them as 5th but could easily see them as top 4.
6. Elsternwick - A team that seems to leave their finals run so late in the season. It's nice knowing they will have a redeveloped ground and some better turf this season. Haven't heard much from them in terms of recruiting, how long can their main players keep them alive without getting some quality new blood through?
7. Eley Park - Went backwards last year after losing some handy players. Had some highs but also some lows last season. With a new coach in will we see them tighten up their defence? When they are on they can score but their slingshot mentality can cost them against good teams. I have them at 7 but depending on recruits and new coach can see them up a couple of spots. I don't see them in the finals though.
8. Box Hill North - Started 2018 with a great win against Parkside. Let the season slip away after that but that was rebuilding after a year down from clubbies. I can see them anywhere from 8th - 6th but not higher than that. Hopefully they can prove me wrong. Loving their social media though and great to have them back full time with 2 teams.
9. Masala Dandenong - Another painful year on the scoreboard in 2018 but did show a glimmer of hope late in the season. If they can recruit some senior footballers to fill some gaps (they do have some good players at their top end) they can hopefully win a few more games. If they can get to 5 wins with some new players they can build from there. Wooden spoon seems likely.
I think there is any chance of the same outcome D3 had last season. There will be 1 or 2 really really good teams up the top and 1 or 2 really really bad teams at the bottom. The other 5-6 will fight it out in a close one. Hopefully there are some good games and more supporters down to watch as well. Good luck to all in practice games. Be sure to let us all know how you go.
