They will be positioning themselves for a big free agency push, freeing up cap space along the way.

As pointed out previously, in 2020 the top six coaches vote winners on your list were between the ages of 25 and 27. This is simply not the case heading into 2026 and agencies have adjusted accordingly.

Prior to 2024 season Collingwood were favourites to win the flag, they missed the finals.

In the preseason of 2025 Collingwood were between the 4th and 6th line of betting. About right as it turns out.

Heading into 2026 Collingwood are on the 8th line of betting with 3 of the big 4 betting agencies.

Do we even have 4th round picks? At least try not to exaggerate. We also have 1st and 2nd rounder picks that might make a difference. So why the "deluded" hyperbole?
What the obsession with 25-27 year olds in 2020 the year before we fell to 17th? Why not 2022 or 2017 two years right before we made the grand final. Even 2019, 2021 or 2024 where we made prelims would be better. Maybe looking at 2017, 18, 21, 22, 24 as a combined result would be the way to go. Why the cherry pick of one year that suits your argument? In the end it looks like a dumb choice because of the result in 2021 (17th).

All have AFL games under their belt. Plenty of quality as well. That's like 17 players to build a team around. Throw in DeGoey, Cameron, Moore, McStay at 30 Crisp at 31 (who never misses) and we have a starting line up for a few years. The rest is depth but who knows who will step up or fall apart.
Now let's look at negatives:
Injuries could cut us down like it did in 2024 and it does to many clubs. But it's not an immediate cliff. I do really like the way our fitness bloke has performed over the last 4 years since he has come in. Maybe in 2-3 years if our talent sucks and we get no quality trades. Or if we cut deep in the next say 1-2 years by cutting everyone over 31. If we lose all of DeGoey, Moore, Howe, McStay, Cameron, Crisp, Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Elliott and Membrey say next year then we are looking at a North like rebuild.

The way I see it is the plan for the future is more of the same:
The Pies will continue to cut about 2 to 3 veterans a year for the next 4-5 years. For example potentially at the end of:
2026 Pendlebury, Howe, Membrey
2027 Sidebottom, Elliott, McStay
2028 Crisp, DeGoey, Frampton
2029 Moore, Cameron Houston
2030 Maynard, Lipinski

On top of that continue to bring in solid trade and free agency pick ups if possible. Drafting will be the last priority unless we enter a full rebuild.

2020 top 6 were - Adams, Pendles, Moore, Treloar, Maynard and Grundy.

Only 3 of them played in the 2023 GF team, Pies didn't fall off a cliff when having to replace Treloar, Grundy and Adams - who were our best when the last cliff was meant to arrive.
