Do Collingwood need to enter a rebuild phase?

I’m not sure they understand players like Pendles Sidebottom Howe Crisp Elliot aren’t easily replaced.

The only one on that list that we haven't played without is Jack Crisp. For goodness sake, Billy has missed entire seasons, as has Howe. They have all been great players and we love them, but we've been forced to play plenty of times without them all already and have planned on their apparent decline in advance.

Will their replacements be all time club legends? Maybe not, but we've done this all before. We replaced a best and fairest ruckman with a much cheaper version who developed into a best and fairest winner himself. We've replaced a premiership full back lost to concussion with a bloke playing in the SA seconds, when JDG went down McCreery and Long took over, when we had no key forwards we played a VFA fullback as our CHF and a lanky, loud American import as our FF. Our team runs on system, big name personel might look better on paper but we've got plenty of well drilled replacements waiting for their chance as well.

As I posted above I don’t think you appreciate the importance of them.

Is that right?

So if we have a similar year to 2025 where we finish top 4, contend for the flag, but just fall short, that proves we should have thrown the baby out with the bathwater, and gone into rebuild mode in the hope we might be in a position to contend again in another 5, or 8, or 10 years?

Nah.

I want my team to do everything possible to contend as often as they can.
Yes, if you contend for a top 4 spot and then just make up the number it will show many of your supporters(not you because you’re a fundy) that the window has been missed and you’re late with the decision to rebuild… and right when Tassie will be vacuuming up picks and kids.

Funny, that was us until 2020.

But seriously dude, is everything ok? Did some West Coast supporters hurt your feelings in the other thread?
LOl no chance any eagles supporter could hurt my feelings specially the beautiful ladies that i met that were eagles supporters i was with in perf
but the delusion of the ones on this site are just pure gold and the ones like yourself who believe what you just posted is smart is actually a few levels below delusional.

But clearly i have triggered a nerve with you so go lay down and have a bex son :thumbsu:

Some clubs have been happy to play the kids and be a development list for over 20 years and don't look like finishing top4 anytime soon.

Just lazy basic stuff to think having early draft picks equals success in 4-5 years.

Tis 2020 all over again

Oldest list in the competition, came up well short in finals, over reliant on the olds (who aren't good enough to win a flag 18-19 were our best chance) the "experts" claim it is rebuild time.

Why are the eagles fans so invested in this thread ?

1 team is regular finals participants and have proven to be a club that never stays down the bottom for long
the other club won just 1 game and finished last by a fair margin and asked for handouts to assist to be competitive

Why do you keep talking about WCE in a thread about Collingwood?

Desperate for attention?

So if we continue to perform as premiership contenders but don't win one, we have missed our premiership window and should have sold the farm to rebuild, finish in the bottom four for a handful of years, and hope that we return to premiership contention in 6 to 8 years?

You're quite brilliant, SYL...

Good old bigfooty where it is always better to be young with potential to come good at some point in the future, compared to actually being good and winning your way to top4 and playing in PFs

If you haven't stacked your list with first round draft picks, the only kids with real talent, you are going to be rubbish in 5 years time.

Every year your club decides to not go down the being shit and hoarding draft picks route it is delaying the inevitable rebuild.

Your position is top 4 + some old guys = time to rebuild? Would the equation top 4 + perceived lack of class also = time to rebuild?

I don't advise you do this, I think the key to Hawthorn's success is a really good coaching group who get fine footy out of problem children like Ginni and Sicily. Give Mitchell the Gold Coast or Giants list and watch the flags roll in.

I think we get good footy out of our list, because of good coaching as well as huge off field resources. This kid Buller is one of a big list of no names we have jagged, I strongly suspect he's another Cameron/Crisp type. We have got some good footy out of Long, who was too agricultural for even Hawthorn, so you know its true we are good at panning for gold in the tailings.

We are not relying on the 35+ year olds, they are taking the place of 19-25 year old fringe/punt type players. Give the draft has already been compromised since the Suns and Giants came in and the academies fired up, we are actually better prepared for Tassie than draft glutton clubs like North.

There is a lot of talk of Tassie coming in and clubs like Collingwood, Carlton, Melbourne etc being at the bottom for a long time. But personally I think that clubs like North, Eagles and Richmond may be the clubs most affected. Its hard to get out of that slump when you have a full rebuild going and a team like Tassie comes in. Collingwood still has a good core of players who will still be good in 27/8/9 and should only be down Pendlebury, Sidebottom, Howe, Crisp and maybe DeGoey at that point. There is a good chance we slip to mid table if we fail with drafting and get no decent trades but we wont be bottom dwellers like North. The big winners of tassie coming in will be teams like GCS, Brisbane and to a lesser extent Geelong and Hawthorn because it will extend their premiership windows and bottom and mid placed teams will struggle to rise. Also smart trading clubs who can pick up good players will benefit.

Luckily North/Tigers have stockpiled some talent that will hit that sweet spot of 22-29 over the coming seasons. Rising up the ladder with a core of that demographic should make it easier to attract through other avenues outside the draft.
Those trying to get the talent at the top end of the draft over the next few seasons won't find it as easy though.

And now with the AFL's want to reward mediocrity....even if we slip to mid table we'll still play finals! So where's the problem?

ps.....I'm not thinking we will slip that far, but for the naysayers....well even worst case scenario, we're still winners!!

Ahhh....the sweet spot, the very antithesis of the "cliff". Both hypothetical in the extreme.

As expected neutrals are still going with list is the be all and end all. Zero or 100, nothing in between.

'The quality won't be replaced', no it won't, but you're all forgetting is that this club is a system based club that is less 'personnel' reliant than other clubs.

We've brought in supposed spuds since our disastrous fire sale of covid years, for example, Brought in Cameron, lost Grundy.

So after 2021, the cliff was meant to swallow the club, can the neutrals please explain what happened? How did we flag after falling off that cliff?

Your entire gameplan revolves around 'Get Nick the ball/club champion/Brownlow'.

Without him in the side, Collingwood wouldn't be anywhere near it.
