A bunch of ordinary young mids are lightly tapping on the door.

Prindable the Lions academy mid that they took looks promising though..
So the guy with no AFL experience from the Lions academy looks promising while all the others that you have no idea about, both with and without AFL experience must be duds.

And they handed back Beams for plenty
What did they get? Was it the gun that was Ely Smith at pick 21? Maybe another late 1st round pick they traded to Port.
We got DeGoey and Crisp 2x 200 game players and the pick that got us Quaynor probably another 200 gamer.

In the end Beams cost us:
Pick 29 in 2008
pick 21 in 2018
pick 18 in 2019

but in return we got
Beams 100 plus games
Crisp will get close to 300 games
DeGoey will get over 200 games
Quaynor will play over 200 games
Greenwood played 86 games

That's a big net positive although Pick 21 and 18 for Quaynor wasn't the best deal. But still solid overall.

Don't forget a visit from the bikies at training a few times, a monstrous payout of his contract and Eddie paying a huge sum of cash to help with his gambling debts.
Agree the contract payout ended blowing up our salary cap which in turn lead to us winning the 2023 grand final. So I guess we could credit Beams with both the 2010 grand final and the 2023 grand final.
Eddie deserved to loose a bit of money and the bikies got Beams out of the club so a few more wins with those as well.

Don't think it's unreasonable to suggest their list is approaching a cliff, but it also isn't unreasonable for pies fans to claim this has been said before and they proved it wrong.

I won't write them off just yet but they'd want to unearth a few solid role players in the next year or two. I think them being a destination club is a little bit of a myth, if you look at the players they've attracted over the past decade Houston and Treloar are probably the only guys they brought in that were seen as blue chip talents. Pies strength has always been an excellent system and getting the most out of the list they've got.

I wasn't entirely sure Pies got most out of Houston the way he was played this season. There's probably team dynamics im not across, but he is an elite kick yet didnt really get much licence across half back the way he played at Port

Yep, I'd hope/expect to get more from Houston in 2026 and beyond.

Pies coaching staff have had a season to see how he plays his best footy, and he's has a season to become familiar with the Pies system.

They didn't, I'm unsure why they brought him in then had Josh Daicos play his role. Would have thought in 2026 Daicos moves back to wing or midfield and Houston plays his natural role.

Are you concerned about the F50 in 2026? Elliot was superb this year but he's 33 and who knows what's going on with Hill. Cox was average but did play a role that needs to be replaced. Does JDG play more forward than previous years?

Losing there best key forward won’t help.

Finishing 9th in 2024 and 3rd in 2025 isnt a rebuild folks not even a mere cliff some people keep talking about.
2026 still bullish again like this time 12 months ago.
Top up on the go.
Fly isnt interested in rebuilds he never was all the while hes coach be competive still for say 2 years.
Say 2028 then things get leaner and maybe its time.
Kind of coinsides with tasmania entering the AFL.
Still going to be handy team in 2026.
And win most games as well.
Got a much more favourable draw which helps.

Not concerned for 2026, still strong senior quality and will want to give some playing time to a few new options after moving on WHE, Mihocek, A.Johnson and Cox who played important roles over last few seasons up forward.

Elliott just off his career best year
Schultz has settled in well
McStay hopefully will be fit and give us better output than 2025
Hill should give us more than 2025

Membrey still an viable option, I think will see Sidey used more forward
Hayes and C.West kids who may be given opportunities.
Buller brought in and will expect him to get a chance to prove himself and expect HHarrison to return as half forward who pushes into the middle.

DeGoey can be used down there too

Still a good dangerous mix of forwards

Who thinks alot of the say general success was born out of Collingwood winning the 2023 premiership.

I do.

If lions won it in 2023 you could say another false dawn and time to rebuild again see Carlton.

2023 had a feeling of if not now when.

2018 was different i think we were a semi final team at best in 2018.

A few other teams alot better like west coast richmond gws lets say.

Really never meant to make that gf in 2018.

2023 had a sense of 1990 about it

Now or never.

Had missed out on it Pies would still be searching for 16.

2023 meant alot in the fortunes of the Pies.

In a way was the foundation for the modern times we are now in.

Kind of the flag that set things up.

Actually forgot we got Mihocek :$

I don't think any of that is outlandish, but probably fair to say McStay definitely needs to have almost a career year in front of goal for you to contend (His career high is 28 in a season, so not hard to beat that you'd think).

When Pies have done well, we just have an even spread of goal kickers

02 - Tarrant lead our goal kicking with 38
10 - Didak with 41
18 - DeGoey with 48
23 - Mihocek with 47

The club could use DeGoey more as a forward (although if fit he is our 2nd best midfielder) and a forward-line of DeGoey, Elliott, B.Hill, McStay, Schultz and HHarrison will cause some headaches.
