Do GWS have issues with trading for older players?

I love GWS fans having a go at last year’s premiers.
Whoever wins it this year, it won't be hard for their fans to be classier winners.
The GWS chip on their shoulder makes me wonder how often they rewatch the prelim vs the GF.

On topic, SJ was done and Deledio didn't play enough this year to warrant selecting

This cost them as they couldn't run with the tigers rebound game
Kennedy and smith in and you have a better team to play the G

Number of times SJ tried to be clever and turned the ball over killed them

Shaw - he is less the player he used to be but still good. Playing one on one with martin - most players would lose. I've only ever seen tippa close him down

I don't think so. I think GWS targeted the right mature age players as opposed to GC. Shaw has been one of their best so I don't think GWS can cop flak over him. Mumford, Ward have been good. I know a lot of people hate Stevie J, and yesterday he wasn't his best (not many were), but he has been good for Giants. He kicked 43 goals last season, ok he had tapered off a bit this year but I definitely would not class his recruitment as unsuccessful. Deledio..well you may have a point with that one but he has only played, what, 6 games?

Yeah
We're over the trolling from Bulldogs supporters with a chip on their shoulder. It's not the same thing. Feel free to struggle with the difference though.

From where I stand it’s mostly one way, from GWS fans desperate for legitimacy.

Now back to the topic, which ageing star will they recruit this off season?

Should have clarified that I don't think you struggle with the recruiting aspect at all.

You've recruited good mature talent. But a bit too much faith was placed in a couple of them.

Surprised smith was left on the bench and both lids and sj played.
Unless it was injury risk to play him?

Yeah he wasn't right. His does seem to be a chronic sadly. Je took time off in 2016 for surgery and Leon has commented it's not a simple fix. 100 per.cent right he plays. I think Deledio's spot is actually safe but Stevie J mmmmmm. He's retired so no point in sinking the boots in. He's a great player and did a great job for us last year. The decision to play on this year questionable but it's entirely feasible Leon asked him to so I would be criticising him.

No criticism of Steve either. He doesn't pick the team. So he can only do what he can do. Was always going to go one way or the other
A risk picking them both in my opinion. An underdone lids and uncertain prospect in SJ.
I guess there was also the risk smith wasn't ready either.

GWS never looked like it all season and were summarily dispatched against the big boys in this year's finals - they really blew it last year (when they were the best team in the comp) and they know it.

How they thought they could carry the dead weight of 2 cooked players in the finals is mind-blowingly stupid. You absolutely need 22 contributors in finals. For mine Deledio is even more of an indictment than Stevie J - he showed absolutely nothing for 2 months and yet they persisted with him.

I'm more worried with Smith a solution to his knee is needed. I'm sure the club has the medical help available. Honestly it wouldn't sirprise me for him to take a season off if it would help. These things are usually announced around now.

Harsh on Stevie J. Not surprising his came from a hawks fan. Had a good game last week vs West coast. He Also kicked 4 goals each in the 2007 and 2011 grand finals in which geelong both won.

Johnson is a type of player teams need in a GF: Only needs 10 disposals and that is enough to get him 3-4 goals. Had GWS made the grand final this year, he is the type of difference make GWS need.
2011 is ancient history and he lobbed in five against a cooked West Coast. Before that he was struggling to get in the 22. At his best, he was a devastating player but that best is long gone - hence Geelong getting rid of him. Sure, you should have one or maybe two experienced campaigners but the point of the thread is have GWS gone too hard in recruiting older players?

The point now is GWS didn't make the Grand Final with Johnson and Shaw in the team. It is also totally true that GWS had an awful injury list so I'm not going to put all of the blame on older players but at the moment it does like an approach that has backfired.

So it's got nothing to do with me being a Hawthorn supporter - more a comment on that he was a champion player but not so anymore. Anyways it ends up being a moot point, as he's retired which I didn't realise was on the cards until today.

1st off I didn't think Stevie J was a bad Addition to the side.

I laughed when people bagged out mumford when he was playing badly yet, he was injured and is a vital cog in that team.

Shaw wasn't a bad addition when the Giants got him at the time. It was 2014 and Giants had a lot of young kids at the time. It could of been easy for GWS of doing a freo and trade top 10 picks on average players.
