Tiger Johnson wants players to cop it for coach

Richmond's Kane Johnson, at training for the match against his old side Adelaide tonight, says both teams will be fired up.

Kane Johnson says the players need to win to take the pressure off Danny Frawley. Peter Ker reports.

The Richmond playing group should take responsibility for some of the heat that has been aimed at coach Danny Frawley in recent times, according to Tiger midfielder Kane Johnson.

Frawley was resolute in the face of yet another media barrage yesterday, admitting that critics had been justified in their comments ahead of tonight's clash against fellow struggler Adelaide at Telstra Dome.

But Johnson said the playing group should feel guilty about the pressure being applied to Frawley, who was dubbed "the dead man walking" in the media this week.

"He (Frawley) cops it the most, whereas we are the ones out there doing it and we should be copping more of the flak, but we can't control that," he said.

"Danny can't get out there and kick the ball for us. We want to get out there and win some games to get the pressure off him ... it's not going to take much to get the pressure off, just a few decent performances and hopefully it will ease."

Johnson said it felt as though the "whole state" had been against the Tigers this week.

Frawley was more philosophical about the scrutiny yesterday, saying that many of his side's critics had been "spot-on" in their analysis.

"A lot of what has been written has been warranted; we realise we are a hell of a lot better side than we are playing now," he said.

"Those things, they don't hurt at all because I suppose if you're going to worry about sticks and stones, you are going to become reactive."

With the Crows yet to record a win and Richmond being successful only once this season, a loss tonight would be disastrous for either side.

Frawley said tonight's match was one of the Tigers' most important games for several seasons.

"The pressure is high, probably a little bit higher than we would have wanted it to be," he said. "We thought we would have been in a hell of a lot better position than we were after four games, but we're not."

The match will be Johnson's second against his old club, which traded him to Richmond in 2002 as part of the deal that sent Wayne Carey to West Lakes.

While the scrutiny is always intense at Punt Road Oval, few clubs face the pressure that Adelaide sides do when they fall to the wrong end of the ladder in football-mad South Australia.

Johnson was part of the Adelaide side that Gary Ayres coached to 11th position in 2000. That side eventually returned to the top half of the ladder in recent seasons. Johnson is hoping the present Richmond side can do the same for Frawley.

"Gary (Ayres) was pretty much the same ... he just kept to what he knew and finally the boys started playing the way he wanted and they got results," he said. "I think we can do the same."

Johnson said there was no doubting the class of his old side, which was considered a premiership favourite just 12 months ago.

"They've still got the personnel there to play well; they are probably down a little bit on confidence," he said. "I think they've actually been playing pretty well, they just haven't been getting a win on the board."

Johnson said a lack of confidence - rather than talent - was also the problem at Punt Road. "We've just got a few blokes down on confidence and we're not helping each other out as much as we should be.

"If we can get a decent performance on the field, it's not going to take much to turn it around."

After a meek showing last week, Johnson said Richmond fans could expect a more aggressive side tonight. "I think both teams are going to be quite fired up," he said

Well from what I gather Kane hasn't had many touches tonight. MMM are saying that Coughlan isn't the player he was last year.

He'll come good julz.
He's injured and hung-over from the b&f.
Add to that the expectations of all us prix and
you'd have a lot to deal with.

Its not like he can reverse his growth as a player...................hmmm

coughlan

The fact that he was played in ther forward pocket for most of the first half before being taken off for a spell indicates his still suffering from that injury. Otherwise why play him in that position.

Infact if his reported injury is affecting his ability to have an impact on the game why not just rest him for a few weeks, we cant afford to have a more serious injury happen to his like.
