Pav had a very good finals series before drafted. Hopefully Luko can too...
Seems a longer year these days with the Australia academy stuff and all the U18s trials

Would not surprise to see any of the SA boys drop off a bit toward end of year

In my opinion they've shown plenty so it doesn't matter too much

Kicking 4 on debut in a final last year as a just turned 17 yo tells you plenty

You were at the game today interested in your take on Rankine's defensive pressure, the reason I ask it seems to be a theme with his games of low tackle counts?

It does worry me a tad with Rankine seeing a lack of defensive pressure has been a theme to his game for a good while (seeing this isn't the first time he's hit low tackle numbers).

Gov isn't going to Carlton, so best forget that. Here might ask to be traded to Freo though, we need to consider if we would take pick 6 (current) for him or not. Pick 6 could get us Rankine, so it's Gov for Rankine. That would enable us to package our first and Melbourne's first for Luko. Leaves us a mid short, unless we picked up Rozee or Berry at 19, then Grundy with Carlton's third, McAdam last or rookie, that would be a successful draft.

Yes, especially if we manage to get into the top 8. Freo would want something around a r1 pick back for this year's draft though, so maybe pick 19 if they give us their 2019 r1 pick (which we might be able to use as on-trade collateral).

McCluggage 2016 Pick 3, Berry 2016 Pick 17, Witherden 2016 Pick 23 [Likely goes higher if not coming off a broken leg], Cam Rayner 2017 Pick 1. We need to prioritise getting AFL game time into our higher end picks a lot better than we have IMO.
While I agree to an extent, who would you have been leaving out of our side ?? Look at the spuds that Brisbane now have rotting in the NEAFL for these guys to get their opportunities. Vastly different situations.

Not sure. The talent currently on our list isn’t to that level.
Then Galluci, Milera, Fogarty have been blooded quite well.

Haven't taken much notice of this years draft but is Luko touted as no.1 because he's a key forward or because he's that good?

Also we should trade Walker or JJ while they have value, JJ is a finals Houdini specialist and Walker can't string two games together. If we go for Luko then we can't fit him in with Fog/Gov/Walker/JJ. Would rather keep Gov as he is one of our few players who take front spot in a marking contest.

Due to surplus we never play Lynch as a key forward, before JJ cemented his spot years ago, Lynch was a playing his role very well. Wouldn't mind seeing him play deep, has x factor despite form drop this year.

Although I’d love to grab him now, I feel Adelaide will bring him home after he’s drafted. I’m pretty confident of this happening

I suppose the saving grace is he'll end up at Carlton which anyone with half a brain would be jumping ship from.

Ultimately it seems the price will probably be the same anyway. Established gun players are worth 2x first rounders. Here we are potentially needing to give up the same or possibly even more to get an unproven player. If anything it may work out better for us, maybe able to get him cheaper.

Rankine is a U18 superstar, it doesnt surprise me all that much that his defensive pressure is on the low end. He's probably been better then everyone he's played with his entire life. So he always thought he was an above 50% chance at getting the ball!

He like many under 18 stars will need to learn that facet of his game!

It may not be surprising, but it certainly is worrying. That defensive pressure is what makes a player like Rankine usable season 1. Without it, he's dead weight as a small forward, as his offensive output won't make up the loss in pressure from selecting him (in a league where success is defined by how much pressure a side can put on the opposition).

I get it, sure its not ideal that it doesn't appear to be an instinctual part of his game, but he's fast and super agile. With increased focus from AFL coaches I don't see it being a major ongoing flaw.

Rankine is the best player in this draft by far. Gov is a contracted player and won't be going anywhere especially with walker looking cooked. Would trade out b crouch, david mackay and our first pick (around 8) for pick 1 from carlton. I would throw in atkins if they want more. Rankine will be a better player than andrew mcleod imo.

Oh the number of times I have heard that and it's never materialised.

our forward line needs to go smaller not taller... look at most of the games we’ve gone terrible in this year.. slow and tall up forward with absolutely no pressure being applied in forward 50.

Look at the direction of the successful teams like tiger and Collingwood... mosquito fleets. Speed, pressure and only a couple of talls in their forward lines... not 4-5 talls like we’ve got!

We need rankine way more than Lukosious.. and we should’ve traded lynch but we didn’t, so now I’m of the opinion we should let McGovern, or even encourage McGovern to, go. I’d hate seeing him go but it’s a sacrifice that needs to be made imo.

But rankine before Lukosious please.. and if Lukosious looks like an extremely costworthy exercise as it currently looks like he will be.. then forget him altogether this year and get a Hately, Rozee etc..

As someone pointed out earlier... we’ve got a potentially great forward in slad coming through too... but get in Lukosious’s ear, let him know we’re keen but he’s unfortunately out of reach for us this year and we will trade for him in a year or two because we want him.

I think he’s probably already been informed of this by the club.. that interview he did a few weeks ago showed he was already resigned to the the fact he would be going interstate..

Mitch is really quick though. If Lynch works between the arcs then we can still be plenty quick enough with JJ, Tex and Gov.

I reckon clubs these days are also conscious of taking indigenous kids away from their family and support networks.

This is where that “collusion” I was talking about comes in. St Kilda for example might want him bad, but when talking to him and his family would know that the best thing for him would be to stay in SA and so are happy to let him slide to us and they go for a kid who is more open to playing for them.

Careful, Matt Rendell was basically sacked for suggesting that about indigenous kids. It's 100% correct, but you must keep such thoughts to yourself.

And I am sick of Carlton supporters bitchin about us screwing them over with taking their players.
We gave them Wright for nothing, we gave them Kerridge and a second rounder to get a dud in Menzel off their hands. They could have kept Betts, but chose not to. Sauce was their third string ruckman and we paid market ratea for him. And we over paid for Gibbs to help their rebuild.
They owe us quite frankly.

I really don't think delisting Wright counts as giving him to Carlton. I don't think they took him until final list lodgement.

Of course you brought Tex into yet another discussion.....We got it the 1st time you raised it and we still get it about 100 instances later.

Pretty bloody obvious you're not watching Brisbane's games because it's their youngsters that are a big part of their improvement so bullshit to your "aren't ready for AFL comment. Every chance they'll give us a serious test next week on their current form after overrunning Hawthorn in Launy today. Before today the Hawks had won 24/26 of their games in Tassie. You're fast becoming the most clueless poster on this board.

He'll just pivot to, "our recruitment is the worst in the league". Then you'll get, "hahahahaha obviously you love being competetive. 20 years.".

There’s no doubt our tall forward line has worked because of the mobility of Mitch and lynch as well as JJ... but will it continue to work if we get rid of Mitch and bring in Lukosious?.. or will it work even better if we got rid of Mitch and bought in Rankine?..

On top of this we still need to find a spot for Fog!..

It’s funny isn’t it... saying you have to be more careful with the indigenous lads because they are more family orientated gets you in trouble... when it’s actually a compliment!...

There is certainly no shame in being more family orientated and more connected/proud of your homeland... so it’s weird someone could be pulled up for pointing this out..
