**** this is such a hard thing to define and everybody will have a slightly different view on it. Let it be known though, that there is NOTHING wrong with supporters celebrating a win, ever! Sport is all about winning (yes, it's all about how you play the game but ultimately we support our team and want them to win) and as a supporter you go to the game or watch on tv hoping for a win. When the team wins you celebrate. Celebrating a win does not mean you are accepting mediocrity. I'm very happy with last night. I've checked out this year because I'm sick of the constant letdowns with Richmond but I'm still happy the boys turned up last night, showed some intent and beat one of our biggest enemies! Does it make up for the bad season? No, of course not. But it makes up for round 2 just a little bit.
I can remember a few years ago our supporters getting criticised for celebrating beating Hawthorn in one of those round robin NAB Cup games with 3 teams and shortened games. FFS, it was all a bit of fun, we beat Hawthorn and had a bit of a sing. It doesn't mean we were reading too much into it ... it was just a bit of fun on the night. When we beat Norf in R23 last year we knew it was very meaningless but we had a 9 goal last quarter and it ended up a fun night at the footy, IF taken in isolation. And that's fine! The letdown the next week was massive and that's a lot more important.
I'm inclined to walk away from some wins feeling flat and disappointed if we don't play well, particularly against a low side. I don't always celebrate wins because of that but I'll be damned if I'll accept anyone telling me or any other supporter that I'm accepting mediocrity if I'm happy with any win at any time.
As long as we're aware of where we stand in the bigger picture we can enjoy some of the little steps along the way.
Cheers and be happy everyone, we beat Collingwood!!!!!
