of course we will try to win every game, but realisticaly we will not be anything but 15th or 16th. finishing bottom is fine by me, makes next to no difference to finishing 15th. gotta think about the bigger picture here.

Agree peggles except you get pick 4 instead of pick 6 which can be a massive difference.

Easy to lose sight of the fact we need some more superstars in our side after we have just had a win.

Benell kicked 6 yesterday for WA in the wet and WA only kicked 8. Pick 4 may get him to us pick 6 definitley won't.

Can't lose sight of the big picture because of one win.

I never wanted to finish bottom, I just think it's inevitable. If we were to show enough to get off the bottom, I would be happy about it (as long as it wasn't because another team tanked).

Lets not get carried away, we beat Port yesterday because we were more desperate than them in the conditions. As nice as it would be to win games we need to play the system the same way that the Blues and Dees did over the last few years, especially with the compromised drafts over the next 2 years. If we finish last this year with less than 4 wins, we get 3 picks inside the top 30 and outside GC no other side will have the same access as us.

Now I know that this time last year I was on the same side as the OP, I too wanted to win as many games as possible and build a winning culture around the place, but given all the talk that has come out of Punt Rd this year it is clear that you can still build the right sort of culture even when we're a losing.

Regardless it appears as though Hardwick isn't overly fussed about winning this year, instead choosing to focus on development of the players judging on the comments he made on Friday:
"From our point of view its's about seeing which players can take us forward and what positions they're suited to," Hardwick said.

"Sides at the bottom of the ladder generally turn over their players more than top sides - its just a statistical thing you can back up.

"So from our point of view we're just seeing how players go in certain positions and come 2011 we'll settle our side somewhat as well."
With that in mind I hope wekeep rotating the kids in and out of the side as form warrants and work out which sort of players we need to target to continue building the list, if we happen to win games along the way then great as it will prove that we're coming along nicely, if we don't win then I'm not overly fussed as we'll still get the reward of a top 4 kid and another 2 top 30 kids to add to the crop of kids we got last year. Either way its a win win situation.

Yes but how many of our gun players actually want to leave?
..... the culture at Melbourne was that bad players wanted to leave.

DM is now thinking of his long term future. They way we build our club and it's culture now will have a huge influence on DM and all our young players. I'd rather set up us for next season by playing good and winning and creating a winning culture.

We will still finish last. But we should be able to win a couple more games. Which will be enough for our players to start believing. Next year we will probably only win 4-5, but be much more competitive as a whole. There will be much less thumpings.

Then in 2012 we will probably start to rise. Similar to melbourne now stringing together good form.

We have a few seasons before DM would be off to GWS, and by that time we will be well on track.

We are more advanced then Melb in my opinion. Next season I'd be hoping we are in the mix to make the eight.

Have you seen Brock McLean play this year???

No big loss there mate considering we got pick 11 for him. Pick 11 was used on Jordan Gysberts who had 26 possessions in his debut game yesterday against Geelong.

Ha I'm pretty happy with how it all turned out to be honest.

You guys just need to get games into kids.

Midfield looks to be elite. Forward line is coming along very nicely. Draft picks mean jack all, it's about getting a young group together, getting games into them and watching them grow.

We still need to come last and get the best kids on offer.
The thought of Harley Bennell running around in Richmond colours next year makes me drool. Let's not get carried away by one win, we still have a lot of gaps to fill and barring a miracle we will finish last. But the future does look very promising and the addition of more kids like Bennell, Andrew Gaff and Luke Parker will only make it better.
As much as it sucks we will more then likely not win enough next year and have 4 & 6. it's all about building for the future though getting games into kids over the next couple of seasons and injecting more talent but we are on the way.

So, just to be clear...some of you would be angry if we strung a few wins together this season?
If we are playing the kids and string a few wins together then I'm happy, if we're playing the kids and lose then I'm happy as we get the reward of a top 4 pick while at the same time getting more games into them. Either way we can't lose.

I agree. I fully expect us to finish last but if we were to win 5-6 games this year and finish 14-15th, I'd be ecstatic, provided we'd done it with our young players (which is all of them) and that no team had fallen below us by tanking.

We only really have kids playing.... except for tuck, Newman and cuz.... so lets just win.

I know the coaching staff has been hell bent on finding out who and where players are suited.
But if we find the right mix then why not play them and improve as a unit. I dont see the sense in holding them back.

I Really believe we have the foundations now.

We need to stop hoping for draft picks. With Players like Webberly and Nason coming late in the draft it's more about players attitudes.

We need to improve our atitude, and our winning culture and build from what we have now. Not what we might get in future drafts.

2008 was the year we should have put the que in the rack and got a priority pick while we had an ageing list. But we didn't....

Now all we have is kids.... so play them to win.

Hopefully we get 4 wins this year and finish last on percentage. There's a big difference between pick 4 and pick 6 this year.

Bennell, Day, Darling, and Swallow are the top 4 picks. If we could finish up with Day or Darling, we'd be laughing. The rest of our picks should then either be used on ruckmen or medium / tall midfielders.

How can we be more advanced than Melbourne? They are sitting just outside the 8 and should have beaten Collingwood and the Bulldogs.

We have just won our first game of the year, which we probably wouldn't have if not for the once in 10 year conditions.

Reality check.
