Ah yes, but thats the tricky bit.

Speeding cops are self-financing through speeding fines. All they have to do is sit behind a camera. As a result, they easily pay for their own positions. Its great, the government can say that police numbers are up, protecting your streets (even though the new employment is primarily related to speeding), and effectively make enough money to actually subsidise a couple extra real cops per shift. Its nice.

If they were to be moved away from the speed cameras, revenue would drop and inevitably police numbers would drop because ****, you don't want to put money into that sort of thing. Then the media would report police numbers dropping, and the government look bad, coupled with sensationising a few speed crash because they're scumbag fear-making media. Then the government get voted out.

As for the introduction of unmanned speed cameras, well, its a bit of a tricky one. If you've got them, you don't even need to hire cops to watch them. Which means more money held. But then that money you saved on hiring police means that your police numbers have dropped again, and thats no good, because you get voted out. It also means that when police are on duty, they're always doing potentially dangerous work rather than just sitting behind a speed camera, so then the union complains.....so suddenly you're a government with unions and public perception against you! Just like that! Bye bye career.

Probably the best solution is to get unmanned speed cameras -in addition- to the ones with cops sitting behind them. That way you can make more money -and- brag about greater coverage keeping the streets safe, while also having the inflated police numbers keeping things safe also. Thats good.

I can only imagine how much money they could make off Victoria road with the speed change off the bridge heading south into Drummoyne. Big bucks.

Anyway as far as I can see, suggesting that cops should be doing real cop work is the same as asking for more cops to be fired.

Nah. If they're breaking the law stuff 'em.

I don't agree with petty things like 3km/h tolerance, and hiding cameras behind trees on a downhill road, but generally people who speed and/or drive carelessly don't deserve sympathy or protection.

I'm sick of being tailgated by morons (mostly in Commodores and Falcons - the bigger the car, the bigger the f***wit) who will ride my arse while I'm right on the speed limit.

For those who say that flashing your lights slows people coming the other way, so will getting pinged by the rozzers a kilometre down the road.

Depends what mood im in i guess.

Theyve put up signs that say 'Speed cameras used regularly in this area' on quite a few roads over the last month or so which i would think would slow speeders down.

My headlights are always on low beam. That way people don't drive off the road. You'll learn it's better that way eventually. :p ;)

And then instead everywhere there isnt a sign u speed like crazy cause u know u wont get caught.

I thought the purpose of the camera was to not Catch speeders but for them to "SLOW DOWN IN DANGEROUS AREAS."

If theres warning then they'll slow down before the dangerous area where the camera is situated.

If flashing my lights can save a fellow australian $100 for goin a few k's over the limit then i'll do it.

It is a commn misconception that the police are revenue raising when there is a camera in operation.

In actual fact the people who are speeding are raising the revenue.

Don't speed, won't pay. It is that simple. I hear people whinge about spending their whole time driving looking at their speedometer being more dangerous than speeding.

Any driver with more than a year or so experience should be able to reach then maintain a speed. I can tell without looking whether I am speeding or not.

It all comes down to not wanting to have any authority over one.

Again, if you don't speed, you won't raise any revenue for them.

By the way, civilians man speed cameras, not sworn officers.

But if not flashing lights can lead to a druggy whos going 10km or more over the limit getting a fine, I won't flash them.

Are you certain of that? I've had 16 years on the road and do 60,000km a year. Up till early last year I had a 1983 2L Toyota and didn't have much trouble telling what speed I was doing, partly because of the noise of the car. Since March last year I've had a 2000 AU Ford and whenever I go to Adelaide I use the speed warning alarm in it because I go over the limit regularly otherwise. The car is so smooth and quiet that you don't realise how fast you're going without regularly looking at the speedo. I'm sure the speed warning has saved me from a few fines.

If speed cameras are so effective, then why does the number of people being caught keep going up, but the road toll has levelled out in the last 4 - 5 years. Prior to speed cameras the road toll had been continually falling.

The stats show that the vast majority of drivers being caught are exceeding the limit by just a small amount. They are not driving at reckless speeds. Hence why Victoria started raking the money in big time when they reduced the tollerance to 3km over.

Where's all the money going? It's certainly not going to improve the roads, which is where speeding revenue should be spent.

I do not speed in city or town areas. I have been known to occasionally put my foot down on the hwy, but 99% of the time I obey the speed limit there too. Hence my first and last fine 6 years ago (laser gun). And importantly I will drive below the limit when the conditions are bad.

Yes I flash my lights to warn oncoming drivers because I believe that speed cameras are nothing more than revenue raisers, even though I have never been caught by a speed camera.

A month ago I had my parents in the car and my mum complained that I was driving way too fast (I never exceeded the limit though). My mum has had 5 speed camera fines. What does that say?

The vast majority of people caught as I said are not driving recklessly, just exceeding the limit by a small amount for a short time. The wrong people are being caught and the cameras won't stop the person who intends to drive at excessive speed anyway. And the fine won't arrive in the mail for a few weeks. Imagine how many people the reckless speeder could kill or injure in that time.

Enough rant. It's just that I believe the state governments have too much of a singular focus on speed, to the detriment of other important road safety issues.

now this is a post i agree with!
my mums car doesnt have cruise control, at couple of weeks ago i got pinged twice in about week, during two 4 hr drives, as if you can drive for (well i did have a break) lets say TWO hours, in a 110 zone without going over every now and then. ive always said i wish her car had cruise control cos its too hard to keep it at around about 110 without going over a little bit over on occasions. its just ridiculous getting pinged for 6ks over.
ive had 3 fines in the last few months for 4, 6, and 9ks over, what a flipping crock.
as if going A MERE 4ks over is going to make any difference.

and i would like to know where the fine money goes too, i always hear about how many million they are raking in, but does ANYONE know where it goes?

it ****s me, if theyre so worried about the road toll maybe they should start fixing the roads. as thats where the problem lies half the time. unsealed shoulders, you hit the gravel for 2 seconds and u can lose it so easy its not funny.

Just a question:

Has anyone ever flashed their CAR headlights (Nic) if a car wasn't speeding, but had something on the bonnet or were driving eratically?

yep i flash ppl all the time, if theyre sitting out in the right lane without overtaking people.
and if theyre behind me tailgating for no reason they get the windscreen wiper treatment (ie i clean my windscreen so the water flys back onto them HA).

I like to tap the brakes and watch them **** themselves trying to avoid my rear bumper. Then if they overtake me and give the finger, I'll gun it, overtake them then slow down.:p
