I love nothing better than taking the boat out, relaxing and throwing a few lines in. If Labor gets in recereational fishing as we know it will be no longer. We know that Labor are so far up the lunatic Greens and their huge push to turn a large amount of the OUR coastline into marine parks will see what is one of the best hobbies in tatters.

By 2012 at the very minimum 30% of where we can currently fish recreationally will be completely off limits. Then they plan to expand the Indigenous Protected Areas program and then add to that what will be the majority of the coast within 10 years will be off-limits to recreational fishing.

I fish and I vote !:mad::mad::mad:

Surprised this issue doesn't get more mileage. The fishing public is a huge segment of the population. Fishers and hunters should join up and form a large lobby group if they haven't already done so.

Marine parks aren't some weird lefty predelection. They are vital to ensuring that those fish stocks still exist in 10 or 20 years time.

I should also point out they were created by the Howard government.

Howard govt indeed - they had a strong record on this:

http://blogs.crikey.com.au/rooted/2010/08/19/the-tide-turns-back-towards-labor-on-marine-parks/

The Howard Government delivered the world’s first Oceans Policy and major marine parks in the Great Australian Bight, Australia’s south-east marine region around Tasmania, around our sub-Antarctic islands, and greatly increased protection of the Great Barrier Reef. A number of Australia’s major fisheries were rationalized and restructured, underpinned with a multimillion-dollar package to provide the necessary graceful exits.
And, as I understand it, the federal jurisdiction only starts about 5 km off shore - the area from the shore to that 5 km limit is in the states' control.

I don't have a problem with it as long as the areas they put aside arent going to cost people their livlihoods.

We've got a big enough coast that these "parks" could be assigned to areas where there's minimal to no recreation fishing

If they try to prohibit people from traditional recreational fishing areas then they are nothing more than pandering to other interest groups.

Do you think the Howard government prohibited recreational fishing in those areas just to be annoying?
How much recreational fishing is there >5km off shore? Genuine question, not being a smartar$e.

(I'm led to believe that the Great Barrier reef park starts at the coast - although I could be wrong there)

Im sure you'll survive op, just drive a cple more ks up the road, besides its about conservation of a resource which is in great need of protection. isnt the figure like only 5% of australias coastline apart of a mnp? far too small considering how many % of us live along the coast. Its not only about stopping you fish, its about the protection of biodiversity and green infastructure which is affected when you fish aka, bank erosion, oil leaks etc

lol - rec fishers causing bank erosion/oil leaks

1 ship spilling its load of oil would do more damage than all rec boats in aus put together in a year, if you want to go down that path ban boating in general... and shipping!

seriously, the greens are a joke, read somewhere that bob brown said the other day marine parks are needed to save tuna and marlin.
1. marine parks are stationary, both species are pelagic and wont be affected by marine parks
2. who kills the tuna and marlin?? its not recs thats for sure!

over here they want to lock up a 16000 sq km stretch from perth due west to the rotto trench... to protect whales of all things??? WTF

ive fished my entire life, and want to see stocks protected but the arguments these greenies come up with are absurd.

you want to protect fish stocks? stop the pros fishing the oceans, make the FARM fish. iirc dolphinfish take 2-3years to maturity and are supposedly one of the best fish to eat taste wise, why cant someone build a fish farm for them.....

if sanctuary zones are so important how about they dont lock up sections forever but rotate zones between years. some fish stocks dont move at all so whilst they may be surviving in one zone they will be extinct in another? move the zones annually and theres stocks present right around the coast.

and how do marine parks protect areas that are very rarely fished??? they want to lock up an area near eucla ffs? and gulf of carpentaria where you would be lucky if 100 boats fish......

oh and i still laugh (and cry) at the article in a western angler not too far back about these conservationist groups... supposedly one hosting a dinner about conserving fish stocks in wa served up dhufish and crays as the meal (for those not in the know they are both under heavy pressure here)
practise what you preach??

ill be voting liberal this election
1. because they aren't sleeping with the greens
2. because abbott has committed to investigating all marine parks

....thats my thoughts at a non WA level, i wont even get started on the govt here creating a rec fishing license to cut down on fishing pressure and now wanting to introduce rec quotas for demersals so we can take sweet F/A whilst some pros rape the ocean!

Well said BigApples. It's the extremism and lunatic faction that go wayyyyyyyy overboard. If the Greens get power they will run with this like the wind and it won't be long before the pressure is heaped on the states as well. The 5km zone will be irrelevant and it will be into the shorelines around our coast.
