Post some of your favorite memories you have of the footy (wierder and bizare all the better!) for the past 10 years (any longer and the post wont hold it all).

Ok so does anyone remember the very first western derby game (West Coast Eagles vs Fremantle) on Mothers Day - where we won by about 86 points? And on that day all the field umpires were Western Australian (Vernon, Garrett and Scroop)

Who can remember when Nathan Buckley wore a Brisbane Bears jumper? Just imagine how well the Lions would be doing now if they had him on the team with Voss and Black in the midfield.

Also, can anyone remember when Carlton - the "old dark navy blues" went M&M Light Blue for 1 game to promote the new blue M&M ? That was a sight to see

Okay, a few memories......

1994...beating the Hawks for the first time in over ten years. You couldn't wipe the smile off my face.

1994 Preliminary Final...I've never felt so down after a footy match. I felt worse after that game than I did after losing the '98 Grand Final. I really did think that I'd never see North play in a Grand Final.

1995 (?) Geelong vs Essendon at the MCG. Michael Long does his knee and the ground goes silent.

1995 Night Grand Final, North vs Adelaide. North fans singing, "Micky is a legend" and "Miiiickeeeee, Miiiickeeeee" at the end of the last quarter after destroying Modra.

1996 Grand Final. A premiership trophy with royal blue and white ribbons on it....I never thought I'd see the day. But my favourite moment was walking out of the MCG, arm in arm with a Swans fan (a stranger) and BOTH of us were smiling. I was so shocked at winning a flag that I didn't even think of going to Arden Street. I went home and just sat down and thought, "North are the premiers, North are the premiers" over and over again. It took ages for it to sink in.

1998 Qualifying Final vs Essendon....just watching Kevin Sheedy being pelted with marshmallows after the game. Hilarious (well, for North fans anyway). Leaving the MCG and seeing so many North fans munching away on said sweets.

The first quarter, North Melbourne vs Essendon, MCG round 16(???), 1999. The single best quarter of football that I have ever seen. Also Lloyd's goal in the 3rd quarter (kicked the ball in mid air) and Carey's goal from the pocket.

Last memory....every MCG night game where you're allowed on the ground. I love walking onto the ground and just looking up at the lights and you just realise how big the MCG really is. I can only wonder what it's like for players to run out onto that stadium on Grand Final day.

Following the Swans during the Edelstein / Capper years of 1986-88 was a bizarre experience to say the least.

We had everything - Cheerleaders, a flamboyant leader, pink helicopters, record winning margins and record high scores, tight shorts, spectacular marks, Tom Hafey etc, etc the list goes on and on.

Behind all the razzamatazz however was a footy club that was so hopelessly disorganised the palyers didn't even have a training venue or club facilities of any sort.

Still it was fun while it lasted ...

My worse memories

No.1) 1989 SANFL Grand Final
The mighty North Adelaide Roosters Vs Port Magots. It was freezing cold with a force 10 gale blowing across the ground. It rained on and off all day (horizontal because of the wind). Port played like it was a dry day & we played like we would rather be home in front of the fire. We kicked 1 bloody goal all day. I have had to take crap for that for the last 11 years.

No.2) 2nd 1/4 1998 Grand Final
Spend most of the 1/4 with my hand over my eyes, squinting between my fingers going "no, no, no oh thank god he missed".
Then spent the 1st 10 minutes of 1/2 time convincing my wife that North had shot their bolt, waisted it & the 2nd 1/2 would belong to us. She couldn't beleive we had spent $1000's getting tickets, airfares & accomadation. I spent the rest of 1/2 time out the back, sucking back smokes & wondering how much we were going to get thumped by.

Best memories

No.1) 2nd 1/2 1998 Grand Final
I couldn't beleive I was right.
I will never forget the feeling I had standing by the fence watching the players do their lap of honour with the cup.

No.2) 1997 Prelim Final
Sat up the back of the GSS & copped nothing but shit from Doggie supporters (woof, woof in my ear all day) until time on in the last 1/4. He who laughs last!

I still remember the day the Footscray player Sasche was parylised in about 1974. I was young but I remember I was playing pool at a mates place and a news flash came on he radio. All the news shows covered it for about 4 days, it was tragic.

Shinboners,

You are right about that first quarter in Round 16 1999, Ess ve North.

It was the best quarter I have aver seen too.

What was it, 8 goals to 7, or something ? Unbelievable ! There were near fights, displays of courage, controversy, great skill, and 4 Carey goals. What a quarter !

The greatest game of all time, however was 1995 Carlton v West Coast at Subi in Round 21. You thought I was going to say the 1995 Anzac day draw, didn't you ? That Eagles-Carlton game cannot be put into words. It was unbelievable. The greatest display of football I have ever seen.

This was an era, where when West Coast lost at home, they were below their best. BUT, this day, they were at their VERY best. Yet, they still lost to a proud Carlton by a point. The skill (both attack and defence was amazing). I still watch that game and I bought it from Australian Football video.

I suggest you buy it. Remember, I ha5te both clubs, so it must be special for me to get it.

I also have fond memories of Essendon v Melbourne in 1992, where we came from 47 points down DURING the last quarter to win by a point

Last years preliminary final was THE most dramatic game I have been to. Sure, there have been some close, drama packed preliminary finals in the 1990
s, but none of them (not even 94, or 96) was as drama packed as last years "tragedy" (from my point of view.

I also remember 1987, as a 12 year old. I was lying on my bed listening to underdog Melbourne who had luckily "snuck" into the finals, narrowly lead hated Hawthorn in the dying stages of the 1987 preliminary final.

Now, Melboure, remember hadn't made the finals at all since 1964. Tat's a 23 year drought. And here they were, about to beat the mighty, hated Hawks. I couldn't believe it ! Then, tragedy. The siren goes, with the Dees in front. Buckenara too far out, but Kim Stynes runs across the mark giving away a 15 metre penalty. In a swirly breeze, Bucky kicks truly, and the "bad guy" goyt up again.

I didn't even barrack for Melbourne, yet I was devastated.

As a Geelong supporter, in the past we have experience almost the highest of high, but certainly have had the lows. But I'll stay positive for this one.

The greatest memory was my Brithday in 1991 when the news flashed that Gary Ablett was coming out of retirement, and to celebrate we beat Hawthorn for the first time since the early 80s, then went on to win the next 8 games.

Add to this the Elimination final in 1991 wwhen Lockett and Brownless had a shoot out of their own, Lockett won the shootout 9 goals to 8, we won the game by 7 points.l

1992 - we were 5 goals behind the Doggies in the qualifying final before Brownless (again!!!!) stole the show kicking 9 and helping us to an 11 goal win.

1993 - Round 22, we beat the Eagles in Perth after winning the past 5 games against sides higher than us. For 2 days we were in the finals, then Collingwood let us down by losing to Adelaide.... BLOODY COLLINGWOOD.

1994 - No doubt the finals series, Brownless goaling after the siren to beat the Doggies in the qual, Having Couch, Bairstow, Hocking and Mansfield out yet still beating Carlton at Waverley, then who could forget Gazza in the Prelim..I CERTAINLY CAN'T.

THEN THERE WAS A LULL

1997 - Beating Sydney in Syndey in round 22 in front of 46,500 still a record crowd in Sydney and I was proud to be there apart of it. This put Geelong temporarily on top, until StKilda beat Port.

1999 - Still as fresh as yesterday in my memory, beating North in round 1 when we were 40 points down at half time.

I think that might be enough with this post.... PHEW

Greatest Memories

1996 Ansett Cup win - I think the celebrations afterwards told the story.

1997 Preliminary Final - Greatest night of my life

1997 Grand Final week - A time when I had never been prouder to be a saints supporter

1997, 1998 Brownlow Medals - Never felt prouder for someone who had given up possible premiership success and hundreds of thousands of dollars to remain with the saints.

Most Disappointing memories

End of 1994 - When Plugger chased the almighty dollar and broke his supporters hearts.

The deaths of Trevor Barker and EJ Whitten. Ted's lap of honour at the G was one of the most emotional acts that I have ever seen.

1996 - The last game of Fitzroy

1997 - Grand Final loss. Took me many weeks to recover from.

Bizarre moments

1996 - St Kilda vs Essendon at Waverley Park when the lights went out. It was hilarious for about 15 minutes until we realised that the game would not continue. Malcolm Blight fronting channel sevens coverage in the dark with a lighter or match was a classic

[This message has been edited by sainter (edited 24 May 2000).]

hmmmm lets see ill go with the classics seen as no-one had said these ones yet.

I think it was Peter Carey with a chest mark in the middle of a dockers game that was a classic.

Plugger kicking the record - unforgettable

92 and 94 premierships of course
biggrin.gif

oh and who can forget that great game between the dons and wc where at the end sheeds came out of the box waving his jacket and created a great football tradition
the jacket game

2000 the year of the eagle

Comes to Long... takes a bounce and goes around one... and then another... he goes for goal... did Silvani touch... I don't think he did... Longy.....GOALLLLLLL!!!

(93 GF - sigh...)

The sound of Dermie's hip connecting with Paul Van Der Haar.

Dermie running through the Essendon 3 quarter time huddle.

Dermie getting up and kicking a goal while his kidney's bled in the 89 grandfinal.

All of these things led to Hawthorn winning games. His is the shadow that even Wayne Carey continues to walk in.

Personal highlights- 92 & 94 (obviously), but in particular, Chris Mainwaring leaping off the bench at the final siren in 92. Still gives me goosebumps every time. Having Glen Jakovich run past me on onto the ground for the first time since that knee injury. Sounds silly I know, it was probably just relief.
I remember that WC v Carlton game too. One of those ones you leave feeling empty for the loss, but knowing you've seen a fantastic display.

Lowlights- First Western Derby loss. Losing to Essendon (getting killed actually) in '96. We felt robbed. Ditto for Carlton last year. Seeing Jako do his knee (why does he get to me so much?). Seeing Greg Williams at his 'best' (dirtiest) on Chris Lewis. All of Sean Rehns knee injuries, Longies too.

Biased I know, but I only get to our home games remember. On TV though, Essendon v North last year was an honour to watch.

Most bizzare would have to be the melee where Sumich was strangled by Southern, and that unfortunate Fraser Gehrig thing from a bit earlier ths year...

89 round 6 Hawks vs Cats princes park. Greatest game in history. Goals Goals Goals.

Stewie Gull right crossing Ronnie Andrews at the lake oval in 77(?) twice and Andrews going down in a broken heap. LOVED IT!

Bucky kicking THAT goal, which he didnt need the 15 extra metres for, just ask him he will tell you he would have kicked it anyway.

Knightsy and Vanders taking hangers on each other way back at windy hill in the late 70's.

Lethal breaking the point post then nearly ****ing myself when the bloody thing fell about 4ft away from where I was sitting.

BEATING CARLTON in the 86 GF.

the sprinklers ar waverly and the lights going out in the Dons/Saints match.

Hugging Andy Collins before the 88 GF outside the "G" I knew then it was going to be a good day.

the 89 state game with 90,000 screaming Victorians going through the roof when Dermie came on.

Crying real tears when Crimmins died, my first real sense of losing someone who I would never know yet felt that I did. Same thing when MR.FOOTBALL was lost to us all.

Having the greatest slanging match of all time with this North bloke at the drawn 85 game, then ending up getting plastered with him after the game and becoming good mates for the next 15 years.

Getting drenched at a fitzroy game and Conlan kicking a late goal for them to win by a point after he had done nothing all day. Then for the tram to go out and having to walk to flinders st from the Junction oval.

Plugger giving Monky the "mad" stare, I though Damien was a dead man.

Bartlett the little *^$&% just doing as he pleased and NEVER getting tackled, how did he manage it???

many many good and bad times.
On the whole the good outnumber the bad, maybe thats why I love the footy so much.

Dan24

Did you remember the *buzz* that went around the ground after that first quarter Roos vs Bombers, rd 16? Everyone in the G that day was just stunned by that 30 odd minutes of football.....there was none of the usual rush for food/toilents/smokes....people just stood, looked at the ground and players, and just talked about what they had seen.

I said suggested to my friend that we should probably leave because they football just wasn't going to get any better. We stayed, of course, and she got the gloating rights in the end.

Windy Hill in the 80's, Leigh Matthews snaps behind post which falls on & breaks boundary umpires foot, laughed myself sick
even though he was my brother, still just another bloody umpire on match days.
1999 PF dying minutes Dean Wallis thinks he's young, fast & a F@#*%!? rover. DOH!

Best Game Ever: Essendon v North 1999, have to agree with everything that has beeen said so far.

Next Best Game: North v Footscray 1998 to decide minor premiership, one of the best tug of wars ever seen.

Best Goal: Friday night (mid 80s) Phil Krakouer tied up against the boundary, fifty out, side stepped two Essendon players and then slotted through the most beautiful goal I have ever seen, before being clean up by a third Essendon player. (there will always be space in my memory for Blight and Princes Park)

Best Goal I did not see: Matty Larkin vs West Coast MCG Friday Night (I think 87-89) he swerved and weaved through the hole west coast team, unfortunately a Car crash stopped me from seeing it.

Worst Feeling Ever: 1994 Preliminary Final, when Mick had held Ablett nearly touchless all day, and then to see Mick only inches away from punching the ball to the boundary, I nearly died that night I still remember no-one could talk to me for weeks after the game, and I wasn't disappointed when WC won the grand final.

Greatest Moments:
Stan Alves in the 77 Grand Final sprinting down the wing, unfortunately too young to really appreciate it.

In retrospect when North gave Sydney $20.000 for a kid named Carey, and $40.000 for Longmire wasn't Bad.

When D.Pagan became North Melbourne Coach.

Making the finals in 1983, remember Adelaide beat us by 150 pts in the night series, we had no sponsor, no coach and no captain.. and at that time no future.

1995 Night Premiership, That was Mick's night.

1996 Centenary Premiership better then 99, at half time I knew Sydney was spent.

1998 Night Premiership, at half time with StKilda leading, most of the StKilda supporters were yelling "Carey is a w***er" well we all know who won the game and who got the Micheal Tuck Medal.

1999 Peter Bell's dance at the Tennis Centre after last years Grand Final. To see the boys so happy made my day.

The 1994 state game

Victoria v S.A

This was something special.

As I mentioned earlier, my greatest ever game was WCE v Carl at Subiaco in Round 21. Closely followed by Haw-Gee in Round 6 1989 (171-163) and last years Ess-Roos game.

But they were club games.

The state game in 1994 tops them all. It was played in perfect conditions, but was low-scoring. It was low-scoring because the defensive pressure and skills were something to behold. It was the most skillful, yet tough game I have ever seen. The final score was something like 74-72 in favour of South Australia. Every goal was vital.

Remember Abletts goal over his head ? I just can't explain how good that game was. it was just the greatest game ever.

It had a dramatic ending too. Ablett kicked a goal, just as time was expiring, but it was disallowed, as he had given away a free kick. What a game !

Besides the Grand Final wins (I think it was Shannon Grant who did the victory dance at the tennis centre last year). Here are my most memorable games in the Denis Pagan era:

1993 v Collingwood at Vic Park - our last game ever at that ground. The winner was going to be outright on top and we won by about 80 odd points.

1994 Elimination Final against Hawthorn (when it was the draw and it is the only final to go into overtime). Two weeks later, most devestating football moment in my entire life.

1995 Essendon game, whereby the scores were close all night, and in about the last 10 minutes of the game, the Rooboys were kicking goals from every possible angle along the boundary.

1996 Preliminary Final - just couldn't believe we made the GF, pinched myself for a week.

1997 Prelim Final WB v Adelaide - can't stand the Doggies..

1998 last two h&a games v Adelaide & Doggies. Two of the best games you could ever want to see.

1999 Definitely the Essendon v Kangas game.

Great thread huh?

Grendel I was there that day with Vander v Knights - think you guys won but it was unbelievable (I was about 7 or 8 and had 18 on the oversized "one size fits none" footy jumper.

Dunstall and Lockett playing for the Big V and murdering SA.

Vander getting off at the tribunal (after the Dermie hit) for hitting someone while concussed - mattered not a great deal in the end.

LEON BAKER'S WHOLE CAREER! (And that blind turn - Grendel you the one I mean....)

Best Geelong games

1. Vs North Prelim 1994
2. Vs Essendon Prelim 1989, the Gary Ablett show at its very best.
3. Vs StKilda 1994 (KP) - Six gaols down at 3qtr time, Ablett kicks six in the last qtr, we win by 3 pts.
4. Vs North 1999, another great comeback.
5. Vs Collingwood 1999, after 9 losses, to come back from 26 pts down at 3 qtr time was something special.

Non-Geelong
1. The ANZAC day draw in 1995, still the best game I have ever seen
2. 1997 preliminary final - I hate the Bulldogs, great to see them stop even though it was against Adelaide
3. 1997 preliminary final - The nervousness of StKilda supporters when North got 2 goals late in the last qtr to put them within 6 goals was a sight. To this day, I have never seen so much relief at a six goal win. They thought they would lose.
4. North V Essendon last year, what a sensational game.
5. Pluggers record, worth watching over again, and to do it against Collingwood, that was the ultimate.

WORST MOMENTS - Geelong
1. Umpire Vernon not payong Leigh Colbert THAT mark in Adelaide in 1997. Officially the most heart breaking moment I can recall, this cost Geelong the game, knocking them out of the finals and allowed Adelaide to go on and win GF. It should have been ours.
2. 1989, 1992, 1994, 1995 - obviously
3. Gary Ayres and Leigh Colbert walking out, we thought it was the end. Thank god for Brian Cook.
4. Losing to Hawthorn by 2 pts round 21 1999, this put us out of the finals race when we had come good at the end of the year. Aaron Lord kicking the goal made it even worse.

Non-Geelong
1. watching Adelaide run all over StKilda in 1997, heartbreaking.
2. seeing plugger kick that point in the prelim agaist Essendon in 1996, I had already made plans to go to the GF with an Essendon supporter and it became too heartbreaking for him to attend.
3. Watching David Schwartx go down for a third time
4. Add to that Joel Smith of StKilda
