Nowdays, with all that we know about smoking, why do young people (those born from the mid-'80s onwards, who grew up with anti-smoking campaigns, graphic Quit ads, etc.) still take it up? What positive benefits does it have for them? May as well burn a $20 note every time you buy a packet of cigarettes, as you're not gettng anything good out of it IMO.

I took it up despite warnings, familial history of cigarette related death and illness and the $ factor.

Fact is, some people will, some won't. of those that do try, some will like it and some not.

Don't smoke cigarettes myself, but it really doesn't bother me if my mates/randoms smoke around me or at all. Besides my parents I've grown up around it, the majority of my relatives smoke so it just doesn't affect me.

The concept of 'social smoking' in this day and age baffles me for two reasons.

1. The majority of people now view smoking as a disgusting habit.Then again, 'company you keep' and all that.

2. I'm not sure about interstate, but you cannot smoke inside any venues in SA since a few years ago. Doing something like smoking for social purposes is an attempt to fit into a social setting. As a result of this change in law, if anything, I would argue that it is the smokers who are now under pressure to socially 'not smoke' and thus fit in.

One thing I dislike about smoking and smokers is the ones that think that because they have an addiction they have the right to take a smoko every half an hour. As one of the managers at work said "I have an addiction to sex, does that mean I can go and wank off in the toilet every 30 minutes?"
