At least once a week using a chat site try to promote Aussie Rules to international people. I do.....I get a few knock backs but there are people who have never heard of it and are very keen to learn more particularly in the U.S.A and in Britain !

If you truly want to promote Aussie rules in the states you need to give us some live footy. Here on the West Coast, we see the Grand Final live and that's it. Without satellite, you don't see any games because it's been removed from the cable systems. With satellite, we can see one taped game on Tuesday nights and the one-hour highlight show on Wednesday.

To generate interest in the game, you need to show more games on television. Most cable networks don't include Fox Sports World, so most people don't get to watch footy.

Just a thought.

i know there was a bit of a campaign over there to "lobby" foxsports to keep their coverage which suddenly dissappeared last year or thereabouts.
I figure its probably all just aussie ex pats who are dying without their footy.
(poor souls).
another thing- i find it embarrassing that that hour highlights package goes around the world. You'd think they'd try and make it a quality show but its shockingly made. (ie every team is called by their ENTIRE name at every possible chance and the score is ALWAYS descibed as (say)- 15 goals 10 behinds 100 points, and the rules have to be explained before every show !!!!!

anyway- why we want to promote the game around the world is a mystery to me.

I would say the ultimate goal of promoting Aussie Rules internationally is that so one day Australia can call itself World Champions in yet another sport.

Basically if you promote it enough it will pay dividends because Australia will make more money from Merchandise, ticket sales, sponserships. the list is endless

If you fall of your horse what do you do you get back on it! (Basically keep promoting it) because oneday this game WILL become a main sport like Soccer, Rugby, Tennis etc..

Look after its future or it will become extinct !

And I dont know about you but I would love to follow Australia I would be so proud of them even if they lost.

Why not promote an even better, faster game above the AFL but which benifits the AFL and other state associations etc..

There are only positives no negatives ???

To help make Aussie Rules more recognised overseas I wore my West Coast Eagles cap all of last week while I was in Malaysia, although 2 locals insisted that I was from Holland !?!

Is there really going to be a 'World Cup' over here next year, with teams from the UK, Canada, US, Denmark etc? There was a story on the radio this morning (JJJ) and I thought that's what they said.
Can anyone confirm?

I thinks thats a true story

It will be in 2002 and feature teams from everywhere the game is played, except Australia.

So I think that means New Zealand, Japan, Papua New Guini, Great Britain, South Africa, Denmark and the United States.

Tournament to be held in October, after the domestic seasons finish and before the International Rules. Final to be played at the MCG.

thats what I have heard anyway ...

I think we have to promote the game properly here in Australia, mainly the Northern states, just ask BSA, before we start promoting it overseas.
Anyway I like it just being an Aussie game, what would it be called if it was an international game, International Rules Footy?

Good one Go Eagles. I am sure your wearing a cap was very effective (not) lol.

The VFL/AFL with all the money they have thrown at it over 100 years cant get much interest overseas except for some dumbarse little local comps run and pushed by ex-pats.

It will never be an international sport. Australia is small fry internationally. There is only one truly international football and Aussie Rules will never challenge that.

Sooky boy, why dont you go back to the sewer you crawled out of and follow soccer your favourite sport.

Kevin_SHEEDY I cant go there, because I dont want to kick you our of your home.

How many people wawtch soccer around the world? Literally billions. Auusie Rules? A couple of million. I prefer Aussie Rules but I also dont deny the facts, unlike idiots like you.

I dont know about the Aussie World Cup final being at the MCG (I hope so !!)

but the Arafura World Cup is in Darwin in 2002

To Sandie: It would be called "Australian Rules Football"

And to the other point about challenging soccer well I and the AFL are not aiming for that just to be recognised and played at a semi-professional or professional level around the world.

If International people got to see a few games regularly then it would take off at a good pace like NSW & QLD.

and one final point Rugby is no where near soccer in popularity is it ? but it has a healthy and successful professional following everywhere in the world that is not that hard to equal in 20 years !!

So the case is closed...... promote it and if you get knocked back get up again and promote it eventually people will listen !!
