Obviously McPharlin and Fyfe would be in strong contention at this stage and you'd think would make the team if it was drawn up right now.

Mundy and Sandi would have been walk up starts due to their early form, unfortunately won't be getting a gig due to their injuries.

Pavlich would probably make the 40 man squad or thereabouts at this stage.. a perenial favourite but his forms been a bit up and down this year. Would have to put in a strong run home to make it.

I'll throw Broughton into discussions as a bit of a smoky - he performed well as an accountable defender early in the season and has been racking up big numbers in the midfield recently, his form has been very good all year and has flown under the radar a bit.

Ballantyne could snag the small forward spot if he has a strong finish to the season

Pav played to much midfield. Won't get a spot there i'd say...

Ballantyne had to many quiet games. Would at least have to play like against North Melbourne for the rest of the season...

McPharlin the most likely, if he continues to do well.

Fyfe if the selector jump on his bandwagon. But I reckon he will just make the 40, lots of other loved midfielder and very young...

A good chance:
McPharlin
Fyfe (will at least make the extended 'squad' of 40 odd)

Unlikely, but might make the '40':
Broughton
Pav

Almost no chance but might squeeze into the '40' if they finish really well:
Mundy (was well on the way to AA before breakdown)
Sandi (had challenges in Mumford, Jolly to name a couple before injury, though they've had their injury problems too)
Balla

Speaking of Balla, the 'small fwd' spot will be an interesting one. LeCras got to be close (should have already had one), but has played up the ground more. Old dog Milne has had some form, Rioli would be a shoe-in if he could stay on the park. A. Krakouer could be a chance base on early form too. There's probably a stand out I'm missing, but will be interesting if they even go for the 'small fwd' this year and just whack another mid in - its been done before.

Fyfe is the perfect candidate for a half forward spot that they usually save for mids anyway! He has been (and is) the prototype for it- dominant midfielder who takes grabs and kicks goals, i reckon he's a shoo in this year

Depends where we finish on the ladder. If we finish top 6, then might see McPharlin and Fyfe make the side. I'd say most likely to be Fyfe on the bench. No other players are even close to being considered. If we tumble to 10th or something like that, wouldn't be surprised to have nobody in the side. These things shouldn't matter, but sometimes they do.

Remember, there has to be about 10 x Collingwood and 5 x Geelong players in the side. Which means they will pick Tarrant-Reid-Scarlett before McPharlin. They also have a number of options to pick as midfielders ahead of Fyfe. If they want to pick a mid/HFF, I can see them turning to some usual suspect like Chapman.

I read in one of the articles in the West Australian today on the derby and Mark Duffield stated that Fyfe was already part of the 40-man AA squad.

Just thought id throw in my 2c worth. AA is bollocks. For mine, Fyfe and Mcpharlin should be in the team. But i wouldnt be surprised if you guys get no representation. Fyfe will find it tough after just one good season, unfortunately AA seems to reward a period of sustained good performance over a couple of seasons. Also working against his favour is the fact they like to just whack another midfielder on a HFF.

McPharlin SHOULD get a gig. but as somebody has already said, selectors are more likely to do the whole scarlett, tarrant kind of people thing like they always do. McPharlin will be up against reid and gibson for the last spot.

Other than these two, no other players will feature. Mundy would have been close also, but obviously not anymore.
