I heard it was something like a four hour drive but I guess you're right if you're in the neighbourhood.

I only found this out a few years ago, before that I was always under the impression you could see the rock from your hotel balcony. Assuming Alice even has a double story hotel.

Meh, just cause we played in a gf doesn't mean we'll suddenly draw a crowd in Melbourne. And let's face it the afl make all their decisions based on crowd sizes and how much sweet money they can bank.

The problem isn't that we can't draw a crowd in Melbourne. It's that Melbourne can't draw a crowd in Melbourne.

With us playing against the hawks in the GF there was no way the AFL would've scheduled the GF rematch in Tassie in 2014.
Vlads next best scenario was to send us to Darwin. Lucky it's not the Cook Islands actually.

Take Darwin over Tassie all day, especially considering the opponent and the capacity to manage (rest) players. Considering we are certain to go to Detroit and Sydney (play them twice), I'd be ****ing pissed if we lob North in tassie.

Of the Melbourne based sides you'd most want to play the Demons at a secondary location, so there's not problem there. Big game experience against Hawthorn/Collingwood/Richmond at the MCG is more important.

The real problem with this is that it entrenches the fact that Fremantle has a small supporter base in Melbourne. Less exposure for Fremantle in Melbourne results in fewer Melbourne based fans, meaning clubs like the Demons, Kangaroos, etc have to sell these games in the future, as they draw such low crowds. And all this does long term is undermine the exposure the weaker Melbourne based clubs have in their own city.

I would have thought the most sensible long term strategy would be to try to capitalise on Fremantle's relative strength and help the club build a support base there. That way long term they may not be required to sell as many home games in order to keep their head above water.

We can also build on what's in the NT already. You see purple around the traps, on cars, at the footy, downtown, that support perhaps relating back to Freo's strong Indigenous contingent in the early days.

Unless there's a Darwin based team then it doesn't help much with building the club's strengths in a football state. Melbourne will most likely lose interest in the deal with the NT or eventually return to Melbourne for other reasons.

So long as there are nine Melbourne based clubs and the grand final is hosted in Melbourne, building Melbourne based support is the one of the most important things for the club. IMO that's why the club was so peeved at the qualifying final being shifted to Kardinia. You have to have a strong presence in football's most important city.

Valid points. But let's not forget that football clubs are more than just business entities concerned purely with the bottom line.
