Docklands Stadium (Marvel Stadium) - Discussion

I understand (and somewhat agree) with the Docklands precinct being generally terrible - I've rarely spent any time there outside of heading to the stadium, and when I have it's got a weird 'ghost town' kind of vibe

but I don't understand the hate of the stadium itself -
It mostly comes down to the fact that Victorians have an alternative stadium the Victorians believe is the pinnacle of Australian stadiums.

Its a chore to get in and out of and there are no good seats in GA.The food is more expensive, the tickets are more expensive. The lack of different stands and closed roof makes me feel lost and out of sorts. The atmosphere is poor, mainly because the lower drawing teams play there, but also because the fans are stuck on level 3 so far away from the ground.

All these things the MCG does better than Etihad, and its much easier to point out its flaws when you have a good example of it being done better.

when it comes to T20 cricket, Docklands is the best, but yes the general admission allocation in the winter is poor

No good seats in GA? For most games just about the entire third level is GA! If you get there early enough you can park yourself on the wing (and even if you don't get there early, any seat in the front 2/3rds of the third tier is a good seat). Craps all over any public seat at the MCG, where the MCC members take all the best seats.
$25 for that is the biggest bargain in the AFL. Equivalent seats at Perth stadium are $800 a year.

Wrong - the front 6 rows of the 3rd level are not GA. Anyone behind those seats can't see the boundary line below them. And having the GA on the 3rd level, even for low attendance games, ruins the atmosphere.

You're also wrong on the MCG, who change GA access for each game depending on the expected attendance. You can often get great level 1 seats at the MCG for 25 bucks.

You're severely underselling the value of seats at Docklands. Row 7 on the wing are incredible seats. Anything on the wing is. Ends of the ground are pretty rubbish if you're in the top third of the third tier, although that's the case at every venue. Top tier behind the goals at the MCG is pretty crap as well.

And those low attendance games are hardly going to be chock full of atmosphere at the MCG. I've been to 20k crowds at the MCG and it's horrible for atmosphere. It feels like about 5000 people there.

Not on the wing. MCC on one side, AFL members on the other side. And seats in the top tier at the MCG are a lot worse than the equivalent seats at Docklands because they're further from the field.

I did mention that most of the complaining occurs because we have an alternative. People from interstate compare it to Football park or Subiaco Oval and think its a great place to watch Football.

There is a decent chunk of each wing that is public tickets in the Olympic and GSS. And any seats not sold before game day get opened up to General Admission. For most games you can walk up and get level 1 seating for $25, or if you want to reserve a seat its usually about $30-35.

Meanwhile at Etihad dynamic pricing means that clubs can charge their own price. For the North Melbourne/Richmond match, seats on level 3 were $45+ and level 2 was almost $90. Level 2 was practically empty and level 3 was packed as 36,000 people came in.

I agree the MCG is better

I don't think Docklands Stadium is bad though
DS has a ROOF, thus no rain affected ground/slippery ball/poor game spectacle, soaked fans. DS amenity 10/10; MCG 5/10!

DS with 35,000+ is a great atmosphere. MCG with 35,000 is just average.

For those saying there is no parkland around DS, you do realise it is in the CBD! Further away, Ron Barassi Snr park is being developed.
DS, next to the harbour & with its multiple direct doorstop train, tram, bus (& possibly ferry) links, is, arguably, the best located stadium in the world.

The Docklands precinct, if the Vic. govt/AFL ambitions are achieved, will transform Melbourne -& will be a 365 day pa day & night attraction. Pt Melb. & Bay St have become very popular -but 30 years ago, they were "boring/unattractive/neglected" & had very few visitors.
Vision people!

And in 2037, when the current AFL contract expires, will the MCC will be feeling very nervous?

Anyone been to a concert at Etihad?

Pretty keen on seeing Taylor Swift later this year but the only tickets remaining are 'restricted view.' Generally I go to games with a fair bit of seating available so park up in a pocket somewhere, but how bad are the restricted views? Are they general things like concourse entries, walls or are they generally music-related.

They're one of those things where sometimes you barely have an issue whatsoever and get a good price, whereas other times you can be ****ed over.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

The restricted view seats for the footy are those on level 3 next to the scoreboard. For concerts, they could be seats that are obstructed by stage rigging....etc.

With concerts, if you get a crap seat, you can just go down to level one and stand at the back of the seating bay.

Wouldn't that... not matter, as there's nothing in the pockets except the crowd? Not like missing out on a quarter of the ground.

These seats are at the opposite third to the stage, at the other end. So not going to be intercepted by anything like that?

Just checked, they've moved the wings in, but behind each goal they haven't for the "kids" zones.

interesting.
Clever though. Bring the good seats closer but also leave enough space for other stuff. Wonder where kids stuff will be in Adelaide and Sydney.

it would be surreal for kids to play and have a kick right next to the players on the field essentially.

thats one thing I reckon kids get deprived of now compared to back in the day when full forwards and full backs stayed at home and kids got to stand right up with them in the ponford stand

Even just having a kick at the same posts that Lockett or whoever did :)

A NEW plan to breathe life into the Etihad Stadium precinct and improve footy fans’ experiences is a step closer.

But any deal between the AFL and the Andrews Government to boost the second biggest stadium in Melbourne through a cash injection of hundreds of millions of dollars is likely to require the league spending more on women’s facilities around the state.

Negotiations over a plan to boost Docklands, which would see new open-air bars and gardens, have progressed, senior sources say.

The government is also keen to expand and improve Southern Cross station, delivering more platforms and better connectivity to Docklands as part of the project.

But if the massive stadium fix is endorsed as part of the government’s May Budget, it will almost certainly kill off a proposal by Collingwood president Eddie McGuire for a $1 billion new ground opposite the MCG and the Melbourne Park tennis precinct.

The Herald Sun revealed in 2016 that AFL chiefs had presented a glossy 32-page document, Docklands Reimagined, to Premier Daniel Andrews and Sport Minister John Eren.

Under the AFL’s $300 million revamp plan for tired Etihad, the arena would open out to Harbour Esplanade and a sprawling waterfront entertainment zone.

A running track would wind its way around the ground, with grassed parkland, including a playground for children on the western side.

A revamped facade, giant rock climbing wall outside and even community yoga classes on the playing surface have also been mooted.
The government has since embarked on a wider review of all stadiums in Victoria.

It is understood the government has suggested that further funding for AFLW facilities must be locked in by the AFL before a deal is done.

Any move to change the Etihad Stadium precinct would look to boost tourism, as well as the night life and options for residents.

Channel 7 last night reported a better deal for tenant clubs, as well as new options for concerts and music events, would be pursued as part of the deal. Open-air bars and restaurants would be built, along with a 1500-seat ballroom, which could host events such as the Brownlow Medal.

The revamp will not add to the 54,000-seat capacity but the stands will be upgraded.
