Docklands Stadium (Marvel Stadium) - Discussion

Keep noticing North home games, why are the conditions so dewy/slippery at the beginning of games? And towards the end of the game the better team starts to dominate i.e crows on the weekend.
Do sprinklers come into play? Any insight into this surely I'm not the only one who has noticed this. Even against port, conditions were slippery during the beginning of the game and then as the game went on, port began to dominate.
Apprantly they water the ground before the game sometime. Ross Lyon mentioned it on radio a couple of weeks ago.

Havent paid attention to North games yet. So day or night games? Roof open or closed?
The roof is shut for all AFL games this year as par the AFL policy.

Does anyone know what the tarp on the top deck seats (left of screen) is for? It seems to be there for every match no matter who is playing.

The redevelopment of Marvel Stadium will start at the end of this AFL season, with a builder appointed for the $225 million Docklands revamp.
Spectators are set to be seated at a new-look stadium during the 2023 season, with a new public plaza, function spaces, fan zones and giant screens among the upgrades.

The AFL and state government on Monday is to announce construction giant John Holland as the builder for a stadium and precinct upgrade they hope will turn the area into a year-round hub for sports and entertainment.
The AFL is confident the redevelopment will not affect the ability to host games at the stadium during construction, with normal fixturing and spectator capacity to remain.

The bulk of construction work is to take place outside the venue, so some areas of the concourse will have building works but minimal disruption for fans and patrons in the stadium and precinct.

New giant scoreboards – twice the size of the screens used at the stadium – will be installed once the footy season ends this year.

State-of-the-art LED lighting mean teams can take over the venue with club colours in and outside the stadium.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said the upgrades would deliver the best experience for fans in the stadium and visitors to the precinct.

“We have great, innovative designs that have captured our desire to amplify the stadium’s ability to host multiple events across a calendar year and ensure fan experience has been front of mind when designing the upgrade,’’ he said.

“By renovating the existing structure of the stadium, it will provide a more environmentally sustainable way of building, as well as ensuring minimal disruption to fans during the construction period.”

The revamp will see eastern and southern entry points to the stadium improved.

Two levels of function rooms with CBD views will be built on the city side and public open spaces will be upgraded for use as markets and community gatherings.

Major renovations will be made to public food and beverage areas, connections into the arena and more spaces will be added for fans to catch up before, during and after events.

AFL selects John Holland for $173m Marvel Stadium upgrade works

Construction firm John Holland selected as building partner for AFL’s Marvel Stadium and stadium precinct upgrade work.

The Australian Football League (AFL) has selected construction firm John Holland as the building partner of the Marvel Stadium and stadium precinct upgrade.
The $173.7m (A$225m) redevelopment of the Marvel Stadium and Docklands precinct is intended to create a 365-day-a-year sport and entertainment hub for Melbourne.

AFL noted that the works will include revitalised eastern and southern entry points including a new ‘Town Square’ that will transform the space into a seven-day-a-week, as well as an open and accessible area.

It will also feature a new city-side extension that will have function rooms with views of both the arena and CBD.
Other upgrades include renovations to public food and beverage areas, improved lighting and technology and new male and female change rooms for athletes.

AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan said: “The John Holland team will help bring our vision to life, which is to make the Marvel Stadium precinct one of the best and technologically advanced sports and entertainment destinations in the world.

“By renovating the existing structure of the stadium, it will provide a more environmentally sustainable way of building, as well as ensuring minimal disruption to fans during the construction period.”

AFL plans to commence upgrade work following the conclusion of the 2021 Toyota AFL Premiership Season. The work is scheduled for completion during the 2023 season.

Taking Marvel Stadium to the next level

One of Australia’s leading construction firms has been appointed to carry out the upgrade of Marvel Stadium in our Docklands Precinct, creating hundreds of jobs and significantly enhancing one of Victoria’s most important major events venues.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula today announced John Holland Group will construct the $225 million project, funded by the Victorian Government as part of its State-AFL Funding and Commitment Deed.

John Holland Group has a solid record of delivering and upgrading major infrastructure in Victoria, including the Great Southern Stand at the MCG, the Victorian Heart Hospital, and multiple projects for Metro Trains including level crossing removals and works on the Metro Tunnel.

They will play a key role in delivering the upgrade of Marvel Stadium, which is now more than 20 years old.

Upgrades will modernise the stadium, which is a key venue in Victoria’s suite of major event locations that are vital in driving Melbourne’s visitor economy.

The upgrade to Marvel Stadium will better connect Melbourne’s CBD with Docklands, and help with re-energising Melbourne in its post COVID-19 recovery.

Construction is set to start later this year and will be completed in late-2023. It will generate more than 230 jobs for Victorians and give a boost to local suppliers thanks to the Victorian Government’s Local Jobs First Policy and Major Project Skills Guarantee and continued investment in the Docklands Business Precinct.

Key components of the upgrade will include improvements to the southern entrance - ‘Town Square’ - which will transform the Bourke Street arrival experience linking the field of play with the external concourse, connecting the stadium precinct and the city.

Town Square will be a flexible, sheltered, semi-outdoor, accessible space capable of hosting community events and being a place to gather all year round. It will feature a Sensory Room, Changing Places Facility and multi-faith room.

The works will also deliver an expanded eastern stadium entrance - City Edge - featuring an enhanced, flexible concourse space with consolidated ticketing, merchandising and food and beverage offerings. Upgraded function rooms will provide greater versatility for events and take advantage of views back to the Melbourne CBD.

Significant works will also take place inside the stadium, including new video scoreboards, thematic and sports lighting. A refurbishment to the change room facilities will occur to level the playing field for professional women’s sport, plus additional public parking for bicycles.

Importantly, the stadium will remain operational throughout the project, able to host scheduled games and major events that are critical to our economic recovery.

The Victorian Government’s investment into Marvel Stadium is delivering significant benefits for Victorians. It locks in the AFL Grand Final at the MCG until 2058, and also secures AFL matches in Geelong and Ballarat.

Additionally, the arrangement includes a partnership with the AFL to develop multicultural, indigenous and women’s football, and secures an investment from the AFL into professional, semi-professional and community sporting infrastructure. Significantly, it also guarantees ongoing access to Marvel Stadium for other sporting codes and events.

When was there ever any risk of games not being played in Geelong?

Before we started our redevelopment, the AFL wanted to move us to Marvel the same season that Carlton moved from PP. Part of the upgrade has been contracts guaranteeing us home games.

The Etihad stadium funding upgrade was a contractual obligation of the Vic Govt during the last AFL GF deal.

$13.5m AUD is spent on inner city hotels alone during GF weekend.

The GF was estimated to be worth $125m to Melbourne's economy back in 2015.

It's fair to say the Vic Governments investment will pay itself off about 100 x over.

The taxes on revenue etc will help pay for more hospitals, the homeless etc as you put it so well.

So why does the Victorian “government” need to spend $200m of taxpayers money on an AFL-owned asset 16 years later in order to “guarantee” games at Geelong?

The “government” makes it sound like they’ve been the subject of a shakedown/extortion racket by the AFL and are meekly throwing money at it in response.

I passed by on the train on Saturday and it looks like construction sheds and pre works have started on the city side entrances of gates 4 and 5.

Putting a visitor attraction on the opposite side of the stadium from the waterfront ranks up there as a WTFWTT with building an observation wheel between a shopping centre and a concrete raised freeway

Its not just that - it guaranteed regional games at Geelong - where the government has already spent a similar amount - and Ballarat, and bought itself another 20 years of grand final hosting at the MCG, as well as a gaurantee that the stadium would be available for any major events the Victorian Government needs it for, including other sports.

Could say the same with the money used for Linen House and the RSEA Park.

A similar amount of money will be spent by Governments state, federal and local on elite training facilities for professional sporting clubs in Victoria.

Anyone else think that watching footy at Marvel is infinitely better with the roof open than closed. Especially in afternoon games it is always dark, whereas this weekend when it was open it looked better.
NO! Always better with the roof closed.
