Outstanding article. Thanks for that. It gives a great understanding of how a doctors day unfolds. I'm always in and out in 5 minutes and never really require anything serious so it's hard to picture.

I have so much respect for doctors and I would never complain about them being late. They need to make sure they are thorough and follow protocol. If they don't they could lose their license or even face criminal charges. It's completely understandable if they are running late. People who criticise them are usually massive shit sacks.

Avoid bulk billed places and your wait time should be substantially less, one thing I'd never skimp on is paying for medical services. Paying $25 for a 5-10 minute consultation is far better than having to put up with some of the degenerates at those bulk billed places to save a couple of bucks.

Psychologists and counsellors actually do this. Doctors dont seem to give a shit.

That's coz we can spend more time with our punters. Time mgmt within sessions can be problematic for some though

Public Hospital outpatient clinics certainly do overbook, but that's because
-the waiting times are so long for non-urgent stuff that if people need to be squeezed in more urgently because of clinical need , it often means overbooking
-besides , many people DNA (do not attend) anyway

I went to a walk in GP clinic after half time of the Geelong/Port 07 Grand Final. Had enough of a laugh and knowing the outcome I thought I might nick around to get a script while I was thinking of it. Its a place that usually has a 2 hour plus wait time, particularly on a Saturday. But that day I got in straight away and went back home to the 3rd quarter. Goes to show most people will put sickness on hold if a local team is playing the big one.

So true . Applies to the Emergency department too
People also put sickness on hold when there's a weather change!

So every day begins with a brand new patient coming in and having to provide all their details before you can begin?

And if most other patients end up needing more than the time that is scheduled, there might be a hint there for the scheduling.

No, but it's common for the first patient to be late or *just* on time and the part about the limitations of electronic records is so true
Most patients do take longer (and don't disclose all their issues at triage ) so it's not purely a scheduling issue. They do encourage people to book double appointments but this isn't financially viable for the practice (or especially patients at non-bulk billing practices ). The freeze on Medicare rebates is only going to make the situation worse (for staff and patients )

I don't want for my GP to say "right, time's up, piss off, next please". If I run a couple of minutes over time I'm happy to wait for the previous few patients to have done the same too. Book early in the morning or first thing after lunch.

Pretty much. My doctor is always chronically late, but he will always fit you in last minute and never rushes you.

It's not a big deal. I tend to book late afternoon appointments, and ring before leaving work. The receptionist gives me an estimate of how long he's running behind, and I leave a bit later.

Yeah luckily I don't need to go often. Don't mind waiting if it means the doc is giving patients including me the proper attention required.

Wifey was made to wait an extra half hour one time while the GP test drove a car the dealership brought down for him.

I had the day off yesterday to have a medical procedure done that I had been booked in for a couple of months for. I waited about an hour at the surgery. Once I was in the surgery the doctor realised that he didn't have the right equipment so told me that I would have to rebook and come back. No apology or anything.

I do though, becuase I'm one. And most of the people in my life are, and none of us would do anything like that . I'm sure there's more to that story

If there was anything else it certainly wasn't conveyed to my wife and you'd think if there was he would've told her considering she was the one made to wait while he took the car for a spin.

If only I had referenced this anecdote in many other posts it might have been afforded a little more legitimacy by yourself although somehow I doubt it.. or maybe if you just knew me a bit better as a poster you'd realise I don't tend to go around spouting crap about doctors because I don't have anything better to do.
