Does an AFL magic round have merit?

AFL should have a magic round.

Have a magic round at the MCG but instead of all teams playing off over the round, just play 11 a side and spread 18 sets of goal posts around the ground and you play off against the team opposite your goal posts with colour-coded balls. Have 17 10 minute periods so everyone plays everyone once and teams have to play through the teams who are not directly opposite them.

Call is the Magic Moshpit Round or something and raise money for families of those who's loved ones are incapacitated in head-banging injuries at heavy metal concerts.

Most of this thought process was pre-COVID, but here me out.

The AFL bye across multiple rounds sucks. I think we could do a "magic round" in Melbourne in about round 12, with all Victorian-based teams playing home games at the G and Docklands. So you can get inflated crowds at the Victorian vs non-Victorian games, and you can create a huge vibe around Melbourne.

Then after you've shaken Melbourne down for it's money, you have a full bye the following week, and you give a free kick to some other codes - give the Storm, the Vixens, the Rebels, the Victory (depending on whether A-League goes back to summer) a heads up that you're doing it and run some promotions to help them out. Once every 3-5 years you work with the AFL and you have State of Origin during that bye.

There's nothing to lose from being a good corporate citizen. The AFL aren't going to lose any fans to the Storm or the Vixens, but it might help them out.

You could also go the opposite if you're the AFL and work with the arts scene as a "we're helping the rest of Melbourne back on its feet" kind of thing with arts events and gigs all over the city during the week off, with deals for club members. There'd be a great opportunity to do this next year as kind of a "final opening" for all the events and attractions that have been closed.

So it's just double and triple headers. That actually would work for AFL... pre-season games. Something like 1.30pm, 4.30pm, 7.30pm all at Marvel Stadium on a Saturday.

It only makes more sense to play in places like Shepparton and Wangaratta because--no, wait, it doesn't make more sense to play in Shepparton and Wangaratta at all.

Currently the NRL are playing all 8 of its matches this weekend at Brisbane's Suncorp stadium in what is being called "magic round".

The concept originates from the English Super League.

Should the AFL adopt this?

The economic benefits for the host city are obvious. Lots of footy tourists coming in to watch their side, hotels booked, resturants occupied etc
as well as bringing in a nice footy vibe to the host city with people walking round in their club colours of all types.

Poll added.
At least explain what it is in your OP...
How can we vote??

Let me put it this way:

"AFL Magic Round - all the Vic sides come to Perth and play at Optus".

Does that sound like something you'd be happy for your club to do?

Perfectly - McGowan’s head might explode from all the Covid being brought into town though.

As long as we get play at one of our spiritual homes ( MCG or Gabba) I don’t care where the rest of you peons play.

Are they not smart enough to realise 8 matches on the one ground may had adverse effects on the playing surface?

So other than the tourism boost to the host city, what other benefit is there? Did this concept exist in NRL pre covid or only now because Brisbane is getting stuff all tourists? Why Brisbane the city? Why not Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide or Perth?
Yeah they did it at the same ground in 2019 and it was considered a success then. Pre-Covid.

That part sounds fine. It’s either going to be an away game against Freo or West Coast (which we generally get one or both of each year anyway), or a neutral game against another Victorian team.
It’s just there’s no point doing it in the AFL where crowds go to games.
