YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was actually telling a friend from Pittsburgh that we had a stadium I would like to see blown up, LOL.
And my Lionstrike (who, as many of you know, is also from Pittsburgh
) told me that they had a raffle so one lucky winner could push the button. They could do that for Waverley, I would buy hundreds of tickets!!!!!!
LOL

Did you hear what actually happened, why those stadiums are going??? Well one was falling down (I think the one for the football team) and they got a new one. Sooooooooo the baseball team cracked 'em and wanted a stadium of their own or they would leave the city, or something. So yeah. I was told this ages ago, so it may be kinda foggy, but that's the basic story anyway.

Yes you have got it mostly right, Lioness.
The stadium was shared between a baseball team and football team. The baseball team wanted a new stadium and they got one built a year or two ago. The football team also "asked" for a new stadium to be built and approval was given to built a stadium next door. Since no one's going to use the facility anymore they blew up stadium so they can use it for carparking space.

But I'm not sure if the clubs threatened to relocate to another city.

Three rivers is much like Waverley and around the same age well. They both have sight line problems and not enough corporate boxes and luxury suites. So that's why two new stadiums were built.

I'm glad that they are starting to get rid of those bland multi-venue stadiums. They're horrible.

Cincinnati's Riverfront Stadium, St. Louis' Busch Stadium, Philadelphia's Veterans Stadium and Pittsburgh's Three Rivers Stadium, were all built roughly at the same time (circa 1965-70) and look identical in design and shape (round). Baseball is still played at the first three, and Football is still played in Philadelphia. I think all of them are set to be replaced in the next 2-3 years.

For many years, these stadiums hosted football and baseball at the same time, sometimes simultaneously (particularly when the baseball teams made the playoffs, as all four did frequently).

Worse yet, they were all AstroTurf and still are (except Busch which has grass now). For gridiron games, they took the dirt out and filled the Astroturf in with "cutouts" of newer, less worn Astroturf (which for those who don't know what the stuff is like, is much more difficult to cut on, your feet get grabbed). And worse yet, Astroturf for baseball is much harder than for football, because there's no padding between it and the CONCRETE. OUCH! Consequently, blown-out knees are common.

If anyone here knows about the way baseball diamonds are setup and compare them to gridirons, you could see how they clash in terms of sight lines.

Baseball stadiums are horrible places to watch gridiron. Imagine watching gridiron played at the MCG.

Good riddance.

I've watched soccer at the MCG and it's actually quite alright watching matches there, and since a gridiron field is of a rectangular nature, the MCG would probably be quite suitable in hosting a gridiron match.

I think more suitable anology would be watching baseball at he MCG. Now that would be a shocker.

Note that the stadium was demolished because the tennants had moved to new stadiums NEXT DOOR.

They havent been forced to move to a stadium 25km away on the other side of a major city (via an expensive toll road to boot) the way that people in the SE suburbs have. While Colonial is excellent for the Bulldogs it is very poor for Hawthorn supporters (even though we keep winning there)

If they had built a new stadium on vacant land next to waverley I would agree with you. It may be all over now, but it doesn't stink any less for the passage of time...

Bulldozing it would be much more fun. It would also be more democratic. The league could sell people the use of a bulldozer for five or ten minutes and everyone could have a go at knocking a bit of it down. Heavy machinary kicks ass. Heaps better than explosives.

The new stadium/s didn't need to get built 25km down the road since they were already in a good position close to the city centre.

While the football stadium is being built next door, the baseball stadium site has moved, albeit a few blocks away.

I know that the situation between both facilities isn't exactly the same. However, both stadiums do have many of the same problems.

Anyway, since Waverley is just sitting there doing "nothing", why not put it out in style. It would be quite a show infact.

Some options ...

1. Blow it up as part of a movie spectacular - possibly with a script based on a Hansen style world takeover after holding the AFL to ransom / or meteor hits sports event . The demolition could be subsidised and the Bobby Skilton Bar would end up orbiting Mars

2. Berlin Wall style demolition - take a brick / seat / sod of earth as a souvenir.

3. In true regional Australia mode, jack it up , put it on the back of a truck and move it to where it's required. Danger Wide Load !

4. The alternative to Ashmore Reef - first point of contact for our refugee brothers and sisters to show us if they have any athletic ability and, if so, gain immediate entrance. It's our Ellis Island.

Why not blow up Colonial Stadium, the MCG, Football Park, Kardinia Park, Princes Park, the WACA, Subiaco, the Gabba and the SCG as well.

In fact, why don't we blow up the whole frigging world.

Short sighted stupidity is alive and well.
