Does anyone know the AFL's compensation algorithm?

The AFL say they have a highly complex compensation algorithm that calculates what teams get for losing players. They have denied just making things up as they please.

Now that we know there is due process in place, does anyone know or can anyone guess what this highly complex formula is?
Formula is whatever Steve Hocking deems to be in Geelong's best interest, and what enhances their chances of winning the flag.

Ty Vickery was Pick 26 :)

Jack Watts Pick 31 in the open market with Melbourne paying his salary

Vickery > Watts

I like the AFL compo system!

I personally enjoy how any mention of the AFL's compensation algorithm immediately turns the thread into a comedy.

Its beautiful seeing the Bigfooty community united on an issue.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-10-...-to-earn-firstround-free-agency-compensation-

It was revealed that the AFL adds all the base and additional services agreement (ASA) payments of players aged 25 or older, of whom there are about 270, to determine where the free agent's new contract sits.

AFL.com.au understands that if a free agent's new contract puts them in the top five per cent of that group at the time the free agency offer is lodged, then their former club is eligible to receive a first-round compensation pick.

The AFL also explained that if a player's contract offer ranked in the next 10 per cent band then he would command compensation at the end of the first round, the next 15 per cent earned a second-round pick and the next 20 per cent earned a pick at the end of the second round.

Anyone having any info that contradicts this? If not, why complain?

Geelong playing finals at the G was the recipe for the greatest dynasty of the modern era. Not sure what it has to do with free agency compensation though...
How did the cats playing finals at the G help hawthorn be the greatest modern dynasty?

Quote from AFL material "In applying the formula, an expert committee reviews the formula outcomes. The committee has the power to recommend alternative outcomes to GM – Football Operations where the formula produces a materially anomalous result."
LOL when have the AFL ever hired experts for anything.

The complicated formula used is the one that nets the AFL and their franchises the most money aswell as satisfying a typically cliche` sporting narrative.

I was going to go with this! :

But only if they aren't happy with the pick they get on their first spin.

I believe it's conducted in front of a live studio audience at AFL house with Gil and the respective clubs recruiting manager.

Hamish is in the duck suit.

The clubs obviously have a pretty decent idea of it, as we saw with the Vickery deal. Hawks offered him three years, the clubs crunched the numbers and figured richmond would get compo. However, it was announced we'd get none and the contract was restructured to two years at a higher rate.

Whilst it seems dodgy on one or both parts, it shows the clubs have a fairly decent idea of what to expect, although not perfect.

The Motlop shock is that he doesn't seem good enough to be worth pick 19- but the AFL compo doesn't ask how good the player is subjectively, rather it does objectively via length of contract and pay. So if Vickery was worth a second rounder at his pay for two years, and Motlop is on similar pay or more for double the length, it's not that unbelievable to jump up to the next band

Age seems to be very important. An average 26 year old will draw far better compensation than a good 29 year old. Which in some ways is fair. For a 26 year old you carried them for the first 3-5 years of their career then get a return on the last 3-5 before missing the next 4 prime years. For a 29 year old you got most of their prime.

The other thing to consider in the Rockliff and Motlop situations is Rockliff had Carlton and Port bidding for him, with the reality that Carlton would trade Gibbs and leave Rockliff in a side that can't win a flag in the next few years I'd say (I like Carlton's prospects but they're a while off). So really all Port had to do was match 90% or so of what Carlton offered and they probably had him. Motlop had GC very keen for his services and then the Crows backing up the truck. Port probably had to pay up to make sure he didn't take Adelaide's offer which itself was probably inflated by GC interest.

Motlop being on the same money as Rockliff would not surprise me at all and if that's the case the AFL didn't have a choice.

It's the same algorithm they use for nearly everything they do - first they decide the outcome they want, then they work backwards to invent a rationale to get there.
100% spot on.

1. AFL deny Geelong a proper home final.
2. Motlop leaves.
3. AFL board crippled with guilt coupled by overwhelming grief for causing the deserving premiers to miss out on the 2017 flag, gift Geelong a 1st rounder to bring back Gaz and make amends.
