Hi GD board,

I have a question for any of you who have knowledge of plants and such things. This plant, pictured below, has sprung up in our driveway and I would like to know what it is. At first we thought it was just a weed (and perhaps it still is) but it's kept growing, and as you'll see is flowering. But what on earth is it?

Duritz my man, I am 99.99% certain it is called Kangaroo Apple (Solanum laciniatum). It is native to your area:

Why is it called Kangaroo Apple? Well, it's leaves are shaped like a kangaroo foot and the fruit resembles an apple.

It is in the SOLANACEAE family and is thus likely poisonous unless you met a fellow Indigenous bloke from the area who could tell you how to eat the berries safely.

When it flowers, confirm that is is similar to the image in the link above.

Thanks yids!! Great help. If it's poisonous, then best I be rid of it?

No problems mate. :)

Yeah, if you have young ones, then I would get rid of it. It's not just the fruit that's poisonous (only when unripe), but also the leaves. You wouldn't want the kids to be curiously picking at any part of it.

Agreed. Looks like I'll be getting on the shovel tomorrow then. I'll probably wear something very manly like a singlet, to show off my manliness. Oh the women will swoon. It'll be like Desperate Housewives down here.

You'll put a singlet on, walk outside and ring Jims Gardening.

I won't even have to ring. There's a Jim's mowing guy who lives on my street. I'll just have to yell out. His name isn't Jim but I'll call him that.

Wear a grey singlet, preferably a Bonds chesty one. It will highlight your golden, tanned skin and at the same time be subtle enough to look as if you're not wearing one at all. The ladies will be all over you then.

A Jims mowing place not run by Jim. False advertising.

Aboriginal people retain an extensive amount of detailed knowledge about the edible properties and medicinal uses of many different plants. The sourcing, harvest and preparation of these plants is important knowledge that is shared between older and young Aboriginal people, and many local Arrernte people still harvest plants regularly for bushfood and medicinal resources.

Bush tomato Solanum ellipticumThe roots of this plant are used by Arrernte people to treat toothache. The roots are baked in ash and then peeled and placed on the aching tooth. The fruit of Awele-awele is also an important bushfood, but can act as a laxative if too many are eaten

Wearing a tank top against pasty white skin will only accentuate the fact he's a Fanta Pants.

If it was pot it's a useless male plant with no buds.

Straight to the bin...or boil it up and make some resin.

Would it be suitable for a brownie or cookie ?

Have cut the whole thing away, just stump remains, will get that and roots out tomorrow with shovel, sweat glistening on my rippling biceps.

Remember, grey singlet not white.

Grey singlet clinging to his bulging pecs, Duritz plunges the shovel into the ground once more, his bulging muscles the gears that drive this massive machine. He pounds into it over and over, bang, bang, bang, in, out, in, out, without pause and without tiring. Morganashlee looks on, playing with her lip.

"That'll sort it," he says, in a very manly way.

Farken lol.
