Does climate change actually matter?

So it's not worth worrying about too much then. The only way you can force change is with your vote (presuming armed revolution is off the table) and when your choices are a shit sandwich and a giant douche..

Hey now let's not pretend they're both as bad as each other. They're completely different, poles apart, in no way similar at all.

The boomers don't think it matters, that's for sure. Possibly the first generation who as a whole are actively making life worse for their descendants, rather than trying to improve it.

Personally, I'd rather listen to the thousands of scientists who say that it matters, rather than the opinions of the selfish generation whose lifestyle will possibly maybe suffer 0.01% if action is taken to limit climate change

I disagree. There is your vote, there are protests, there is social change, hell there is actually prioritising listening to scientists.

Change has many paths to being forced.

I already said there is my vote. I could go to a protest I guess but I don't know if there are any scheduled in my area. I also doubt it would do anything other than make me feel like I'd done something which would be laughable in the greater context. The rest of what you said makes no sense. How do I social change? How does me prioritising listening to scientists do anything? That's something the politicians should do not me.

My thoughts (not just on climate change). I studied science a long time ago at university and remember a lecturer banging on about populations.

His point was that ANY population that grows exponentially, nature will find a way to right things. For example. Locusts will grow at this rate...destroy everything in its paths until its food source is exhausted...and die out. Disease in living organisms is the same...multiplies rapidly then either the body wipes it out or it kills the host. Anyway he went on to list many examples of this.

Human population over time has reached this point. Of course we are smarter than locusts and will manage things, fight disease, develop technology etc...but are these band aid fixes? I feel we are headed down a path, which I probably wont witness, that is pretty dire. Will something right the ship?...disease, war, environmental chaos? Unfortunately governments prefer us living in an economy...and that is number one priority. Until this changes I am not particularly positive about our kids futures..or generations later. Actually I cannot see it changing. For any healthy economy things need to keep expanding but this IMO is the problem.

I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You're a plague and we are the cure.

I'm not talking politically. It's impossible to get billions of people on the same page to make any difference and while the population continues to grow things are only going to get worse. Until it gets really bad like 50 degree days and regular wild weather there wont be a unified change to minimise climate change.

Just my 2c worth. Been living in Adelaide all my 42 year life and the last 5 years I cannot recall how regularly we have been getting heat waves in excess of 40 degrees consistently. Before 5 years ago our heat waves has consisted of extended periods up to 2 weeks of low to high 30 degree days with the odd 40 thrown in.

13 years ago Al Gore release An Inconvenient Truth.

The inconvenient truth today is that the majority of people who make it known how much they care about climate do meaningfully nothing about their own impact.
Gore was a Florida recount (and a SC ruling) away from being president, how different would the world have been had he become president?

Ok H.G.

Climate change matters if it leads to the extinction of mankind. As an optimist I do not believe it will. There are all types of things that might get us first. DYOR on that matter. Humans will have to make changes/adjust to whatever weather/climate comes our way. If 4 or 5 Billion have to die so the planet can continue to sustain human life that is ok. Pretty sure the ... I am too foolish to read the site rules will not survive..it will always be someone else's fault. Ie The government the capitalists that flew off to another planet etc. Climate definitely matters when I am playing golf going fishing or other outside pursuits not so much on BF forum.

People said the same thing about Obama. Great speaker, loads of charisma but ultimately didn't achieve a lot. Don't get me wrong, I think Gore would have made a good president but with the US constitution it's difficult to bring about big change.

If there was a Chinese version of Al Gore (in place of Winnie) then I would have some hope for the future. Only a benevolent dictator has the power to change the world.

It's pretty lame for an urban myth. I mean everyone still has power to their house, you can buy a car and petrol for it, you can fly all over the globe, you can eat beef every meal if you want... All that is really happening is governments and large corporations are slowly moving away from fossil fuels to other technologies.

Sure we had a horrible fire season and we have droughts, floods etc. but we've always had those and people will argue it's 0% or 100% the fault of climate change anyway. From a practical perspective most people's lives aren't affected at all. If we get to 2030 or 2050 or whenever and have 100% renewable power and everyone is driving Teslas that won't be because of individual sacrifice.
