Does Danny deserve a go-Poll

But at work and at school, you are expected to perform to a minimum standard, right off the bat. If you show up to the first day of your job, piss in the fridge, shit on the photocopier and then wash you laptop in the sink, I don't think you can expect to be asked back on day 2. I'll leave it to you to make the connection with Danny Stanley's performance.

This Sounds like a pretty stock standard day at the office for me:thumbsu:

you know when i look at stanley i cant for the life of me see what the recruiting guys saw in him to pick him up at pick #20 or so in the draft....that is increadibly high for a guy who is slow, doesnt have great skills and isnt special in ANY way......when you look at other guys that have gone in the 20's in the last 4 or 5 years it is clear stanley was a pretty terrible pick!!.....now that we have him we might as well see what he can do, one more week i say

Look, I love Danny's endeavor, goes in as hard as anyone and is a real trier. Will throw himself into any oncoming contact, he is fearless and fierce.

Too me, he often looks to be trying too hard and lacks composure.

His decision making under pressure is very suspect, too suspect, he let's himself down in this area and it seems the main criteria for his lack of opportunities at the highest level.

This should get better with experience but in today's game very few players get to spend too many years developing on a list (unless your a big athletic lug). That is the problem for Danny as I see it, he has already had a couple of years and I think time is going to run out on him.

Having players like Beams and Sidey coming up behind him and arguably overtaking him could spell the end for Danny at the end of this year.

To all those suggesting he not be given a game - his career tally is a grand total of 5 senior games with 1 this year.

To pluck a random player out of the list for the purposes of comparison..... hmmm... how 'bout Leigh Brown - he has played a total of 187 including 6 this year.

To give him the chance of playing his sixth is not a big stretch for me. His VFL form is first class and if he can translate the confidence he shows at that level to AFL, then I'm confident he can show us more than he's done to date; whether it's enough to become a permament fixture is up to him.

I dont mind if he plays this weekend but his instructions need to be;

1. At clearance situations, ran as hard as you can at the ball collecting any murphys, simpsons, judds etc that are in the way.

2. Any spotfires around the ground (always are) grab people and throw them to the ground.

I am sick of Carlton beating us (like all collingwood supporters) We need to make a statement on saturday.

If I thought his awareness or decision making was as bad as people are saying I wouldn't be so supportive of him. I am happy to call it when I think players VFL form won't translate to AFL. Cook and Macaffer being two players who I think will struggle to have any impact at AFL level with the skills they posses at the moment(although Macaffer building a tank to play futher up the ground could add another dimension to his game.)

Stanley's ability and he did it on a couple of occasions on monday too, to get the ball in tight and fire off an accurate handball quickly to a player in space in stoppage situations for mine shows great quick thinking and decision making under pressure.

I don't see how that same quick thinking and decision making under pressure just disappears when in general play, which is where all the plays people harp on happen. Which is why I think his failure to play even 2 games in a row and resulting failure to adjust to the extra tempo of AFL football means he thinks he has more time then he does when in space.

danny stanley is useless at afl level.
his awareness is pathetic, he is only going to be a vfl player picking up 30 touches a game, he cant seem to make the transition into the afl.
some people cant actually do it and he is one of them

Bit harsh, but i agree with you, i thought he was shocking against the saints.

I think someone else mentioned that no one deserves a free ride, and i agree with that too.

Not getting selected this w/e might be cause Beams is back or it could be the end for DS. But not to be even an emergency bodes badly for mine.

I'm glad with the stance the club has taken with Stanley, we need to stop giving games to these plodders who will never be better than a depth player. I just wish we could be more consistent with the selections as it does seem Stanley is hard done by in comparison to Cook, Toovey etc.

Just a thought, fringe players now clearly rated above Danny Stanley include;

Beams
Wellingham
Corrie
Cook
Barham
Sidebottom
L.Brown
McCaffer

Seems pretty hard for Stanley to get another game with that lot taking up his half forward or midfield backup role.

To be the only player officially 'dropped' after a 15 goal drubbing suggests that Stanley has little if any future with us while MM remains in charge.

I agree with the decision. He shows zilch on an AFL oval. I doubt he'll get many more games at Collingwood, a shoe-in for delistment you would think. Hopefully for him another club takes a punt and he can replecate some VFL form, but I can't see it happening.

would love to see him get consecutive games, preferably with a bit of time spent in the guts where he excels at VFL level.

Maybe we could call him the backup ruckman, we can then ignore any faults he has, just as long as he goes into the ruck to get beaten for 5 minutes a quarter....

Stanley impressed with his hardness and courage, along with some lightning clearances. Maybe pace balance forced him out - Sidebottom, Beams and O'Bree not being fast. Whatever, I'm bored with the same old faces returning to the side, as I am with a lack of game day magic from Malthouse. If Stanley is to move on, Malthouse should also be part of the clean-out.

I am devastated for Danny and as I have said before I have watched him play footy since he was in the juniors. He is a great player and will make it but maybe not at Collingwood.
My mate is friends with his parents and they are so upset by the treatment Danny has received from MM over his time there. He is so hard on him and threatened him before the game in front of everyone that he was playing for his career and yes he looked extremely nervous and too sacred to do the wrong thing. That is why he looks like he tries too hard at that level coz he is usually playing under stress of being dropped. I could not function at work with that pressure. You knockers will say footy is a pressure game and if you can't cop it don't play it and that is true. But I doubt any of the youngsters have been treated as harshly. Danny has so much mental strength to go thru all his disappointments and behind the scene treatment, keep a smile on his face always and battle on. He has done everything he can to improve he works harder than anyone down at Collingwood putting in extra training sessions working on every aspect of his game. His is fantastic at the VFL level, has confidence and his decision making is spot on. It can and will translate to AFL but he may never be able to show it again. MM has shattered and destroyed many kids dreams over his career and I hope Danny will not be one.
For Dannys supporters and I know he has a few I urge that we get behind him and show our support and hope he is given another go.
For all those knockers how about laying off him we all know your thoughts and at the end of the year he too probably will be gone and you will get your wish.
:(:(:(

trade or delist for me.
if he's as good as people seem to think on this board then we should have no problem getting a pick for him which we can use on someone with abit of pace and abit of skill too.

i don't think we'll get anything for him though so he'll probably he delisted by us then rookie listed by another club.

Stanley has'nt had a decent run yet. He needs time to gain some confidence and get up to the pace of the game. Just like every other new potential player. He already has the build so it's his skills and awarness that needs honing. Give him a decent run and if he does'nt look like making the grade then delist at seasons end.

:thumbsdown:That doesn't sound good Makeshift and really hope the kid does get antoher chance as I am one who thinks that he has somehting to offer.

Unfortunately for Danny not making the squad of 25 for Sunday's game, even with all or injury concerns, indicates to me that the coaching staff don't rate him in the top 30 players on the list and that the young tyros in their eyes have already overtaken him.

He is a bit stiff to be the only one (at this stage) to be dumped after last weeks game. The coaching staff have never given him more than 1-2 games in a row before dumping him. Toovey and Cook are in the squad ahead of him so I don't like his chances of being in MM's plans for the future.

I think that Danny's only chance is a change of coach at the end of the year. Although if it is Bucks I noticed a couple of times during last weeks game he was quite critical on commentary about certain aspects of Danny's game. But I couldn't help but thinking that he could see that there was still a potential player there.

Maybe he's other alternative is to see if Bluey McKenna might have a home for him in the new GC team.

I think the only way to truly find out if Stanley has what it takes is to give him a proper crack at it. Give him 3-4 games in a row. If he's not good enough, drop him back to the VFL. If he performs well at the end of it, then good on him & the Pies are the winners. Giving him 1 game at a time, with 6 weeks in between, does not give him an opportunity to settle & show what he can do.
