Should delete thread - He was U18 all Aust Capt, he is in our leadership team and performs a role - he was on McVeigh in prelim and shut him out first 3 quarters till he was subbed (he copped a heavy knock tackling Maljeste). I reckon he is one of a few who may replace Pav as capt...
Too bad this isn't the kids league any more, When the whole team starts displaying the pressure he does - what else does he have to give? He's not the only disciplined player on our list.

I think 2 years ago there were many who saw Matty as future captain material. We all love the way he goes about it. I think it would be a bad decision now, to make someone who is borderline best 22, a captain of the club. I want our captain to be a certain starter and star of the comp not a Nick Maxwell, Nathan Van Berlo, Kane Johnson type - Fyfey will do!

He is a solid player hard at it.

But being blunt i dont think he has alot of talent(top4 AFL standard).

With the team looking to make improvements it's about who would come out of the side.
My 3 players that come into question are:
1. MDB
2. Sutcliffe
3. Suban

IF we picked up say Lolin Sylvia, he's a very good midfielder that can go forward. Instantly up's our scoring threat and another talent to rotate through the middle.

I totally rate MDB, but it just becomes a question of 'Where can we improve?' or 'Where do we need to improve?'

EFA

I spoke to Sylvia for a long time at various airports on my way to Melbourne. I don't feel like elaborating on anything to do with his future, but he was very friendly and seemed like a genuinely nice guy. Maybe he has had some discipline issues in the past, but as long as he knuckled down, I think he would easily fit in amongst the playing group.

Hard, strong, can kick goals. He's never really played in a truly good team. He often has a high tackle count, so he could fit into our high pressure gameplan. I think he could be a good option if we can't land a top KPP in the trade/FA period.

By saying De Boer is in the team 2014, you're saying a) our young kids won't make it and b) we won't bring in new players through trade/FA.

List management is a zero sum game. For De Boer to stay others have to lose (our kids). It will not be a good sign in 2014 if he's still in the team (baring a miraculous improvement in form from him ofc).

The players who would be rated 15 - 25 and even higher are a pretty even bunch, and I think de Boer is in that group. For me it is a bit the same as with Broughton who was a decent player for us but far from must keep at all costs. Highly doubt he will be traded, but I think it would be possible.

Into the GF team I want us to add Ibbotson, Morabitto and Crozier. For sure Mora and Crozier may be optimistic, but if they are ready to play the significantly improve us. D Pearce becomes a difficult one to automatically include for me as well.

Add to them Tabberner (maybe Smith) and Sheridan who I think may be a fast-tracked a little bit if they demand it with strong pre-seasons.

Realistically, de Boer could be pressured to hold his place along with others. That is a good thing.

Colin Sylvia would be a good pickup and would be an instant upgrade on De Boer. Look how Moloney turned out for Brisbane. He's an unrestricted free agent aswell. Provided we could sort out his discipline issue.

I like the idea. It would allow Fyfe to move forward.

There will be a few interesting trades this year IMO. Last year we had Broughton, this year who knows :) I bet there will be a shock list management decision or TWO (or more).
We need to get tougher, stronger, more skilled.

Form this season hasn't been spectacular but I don't think he is delist material. If our younger players start to show a bit more than him and push him out of the side next season then so be it. It's up to the young players to do that and once/if they do, he would be good depth at least.

Always like to have Deboer in the side he brings that hardness never flinches in a contest wouldn't be surprised if he was carrying injuries this year dont like trading hard nuts. In saying that would like to see Sylvia at the Dockers would be suited at Subiaco will always be injuries so some guys will naturally miss out like Clancee Pearce who is another automatic selection for me.

I'm not sure that Neale or sutcliffe would have come out of side if clancee or ibbo were fit. We need to give crowls at breather by training up another run with player .is Marty de boer the one not sure.

yes
Plus becomes a FA next year. Captaincy for a few years may have some appeal.

yes, Mundy for Captain to help him decide to stay when he becomes a FA

2 great posts there :thumbsu:

I was thinking more like Barlow or Mundy as captain for 2 seasons after Pav is gone but back on the Topic...

Lets get one thing straight... Our mob just made the Grand final for the 1st time in our history. As for Matt De Boer.... He is 22/23 years old and Freo have invested 5 years and 100 games in him now all of a sudden he should be traded?

Look lets be honest there is one more guy that has played 100 games and was also from the 2008 draft like Do Boer and that is Stephen Hill. Hill is a required player as well.

Im am going to say one Very important thing on here... Look at the teams that have won flags in the last 15-20 years. How many of those Premiership teams have traded their best 22 players to help get them to a flag? I say close to none of them. They traded their draft picks to get players they need to win the flag.

Go look at Port from 2001-2004, They traded heavily to get Premiership players from other clubs like Damien Hardwick and Byron Pickett to Port and they won a flag in 2004.

Another example is Ironically the hawks their 2008 and 2013 flags. In 2007 they got Stewart dew out of retirement and he played a key role in the 2008 grand final. Also he is from Ports 2004 side. After the 2008 flag, Hawks Also recruited other players as well like David Hale, Brian Lake and Shaun Burgoyne. Burgoyne is another Port Player from that 2004 premiership side.

I hate to say it. We might need to trade our 2nd or possibly our 1st round pick to get a decent player t improve our flag chances.

De Boer is so over-rated on here. Yes he is hard as nails. Yes he can limit his opposition players effect on the game. Yes he is a solid player.
However, there are a few valid points to trade him off.
1. He has currency. A young fearless leader type with 100 games and finals experience. We are not going to get anywhere by talking about trading Crichton/ Lower types, we need to trade decent players.
2. Bond has stated that having too many players in one age group isn't ideal for the list management model. Out of the remaining 2008 group, he's the one we can afford to lose.
3. We need to improve in the forward line. Take out DeBoer out of the GF team, replace him with a medium/ key forward and we are a better side.

I think the point you guys are missing is that we have more than 22 players in the side. Should Crozier, Michie, Morabito, Sheridan etc just play WAFL until De Boer retires? If not, who else are you planning on dropping?
