A draft being national in no way or shape means where you are born is irrelevant.

It's a basic fact of draft night that recruiting a kid from another state is a bigger risk than recruiting one from your own backyard. It's well documented that Aboriginal kids from remote communities have a hard time adjusting to a completely different lifestyle. Going to the other side of the country away from family can only make that harder.

I think you will find there is a direct correlation between states with a higher % of Aboriginals living there drafting a higher % of Aboriginals to their list, and it ain't hard to figure out why.

While this is quite factual, I'm going to continue to think it's because we Victorian's are all a bunch of hill billy racists.....

Gut feeling is not good. We sorely need players with elite kicking ability and Bonner was there for the taking at 32. Would've liked us to pick up Mitch Brown too, as Reid is a very risky conveyance, as is Nathan Brown to a lesser extent. Having a ready made, afl experienced key position player would've been nice.

Mitch Brown is nothing but a VFL player. Seriously, so much hype for a bloke that isn't even that good.

Pretty much. I have repeated it half a dozen times but it makes little difference to the conclusions that some people choose to make. I won't be commenting on Aboriginal issues again. Just not worth it.

Good.... Most of the time, what you say is just blatant racism. Tonight is no different.... Yes, you moved quite quickly into saying we should work to improve our indigenous development and recruitment but it's not what you started saying. Both you and popin felt that the club should have recruited indigenous because we only have one currently on our list.... No other reason but to "even the ledger" and be PC.

What rubbish. Government and most major companies have strategies around increasing their Indigenous workforce. Are they racist too?

I am a fan of Indigenous players and feel that having some on our list would improve our side. That's not racist. You do make me laugh Wicksy. I will always remember your thread about cancelling your membership if the club signed Cloke. Sadly though you are still here...

Oh FFS!

I don't know how many times its been mentioned, but we lack crumbers and outside speed and skill, which generally indigenous players have.

Everyone seems to be skipping over this argument for some reason.

Absolutely it does.... Shouldn't companies hire the man or woman who is better qualified for the job rather than for the colour of their skin.... That is the definition of political correctness gone mad and racism!!

You have a good memory. I didn't renew my membership and I still think he's overpaid and bent the club over.... The relevance to this thread evades me.

Guys, please get this thread back on topic. The issue of drafting indigenous players has been well and truly covered. Not resolved. Not agreed on. But done for now. If the posts persist, they will be deleted.

The topic is about Dekka's drafting. One point I'd like to make, is that he has picked all Melbourne-based lads. His infatuation with South Australia appears to have run its course for now. No danger of the 'go home' factor kicking in.

He did seem happy to bring through a cohort of SA lads there though, for sure. Maybe he thought having Grundy/Kennedy/Broomhead/Scharenberg (and later Kennedy out, Aish in) would help acclimatization and retention.

Reading through piles of posts trying to make sense of this thread....
What's gone on in the last few hours makes little sense, so you've probably wasted your time! I hope you guys are getting well paid for doing this!!

Our payment is all the love and thanks we receive from our fellow posters. Oh, wait...

My view is that our Indigenous representation could be improved. It doesn't have to be at the expense of any other player or be applied to one particular draft. I see it as a strategic direction over a number of years and very much aimed at making the list better.
Without wanting to take this thread further off-topic, it would depend on what model of drafting you aspire to.

Without statistics in hand, I would hazard a guess that indigenous players are over-represented in the small forward category, an area many on here have been crying out for us to draft for since another indigenous player in Andrew Krakouer hung up the boots.

There's a very good chance you could select an indigenous small forward, with little more than the might of Bigfooty groupthink behind his perceived talent (see Daniel Rioli) and we'd all laud the selection on a needs basis, whether he was best available or not.

As such it would be very easy to justify your strategic direction, regardless of what measure you use to determine list improvement.

If you ascribe to purely "best available" drafting however, there is no way to improve your list by taking anyone other than the best available selection at any pick, and you would diverge even further from optimal drafting the longer the policy of taking sub-optimal selections continued.
