Does Murphy get to 300?

Is this extremely likely to be Murphy's last year (obviously not confirmed until he announces his retirement)? I know he hasn't been playing that well (out of his natural position?) but the way the media is talking, it seems to be a foregone conclusion.

If it comes down to the last gamer, maybe he should do a Mark Taylor (was it? the Bradman thing?) and go to the coach when he is on 299 games and say I think Honey should play in the last game not me. He might end up being remembered for that selfless act more than anything.

There are 8 games to go. He has done his calf (an old man injury) which he needs to get mended in 2-3 weeks and then play in 4 of the last 6 games. If gets stuck on 298 or 299 games we will be the laughing stock of the AFL, and it will not go down well within the playing group.

Agree. It is too close now to not get him to 300. We aren’t going to make finals either so just get him there ASAP and be done with it.

Say we win our next 3... we are 8-9 (sitting a game out of the 8), Murphy is ready to come in does he get into the team? Hell no, unless he's best 22 on form and fitness. We end up winning, 9-9, team balance is great, no injuries! We've had a stable 23 for 3-4 weeks, does Murphy get a game? Hell no... unless finals our 100% out of the question by the time he's over this calf, he don't play unless deemed 100% best 23.

Hey Murph, thanks for your sacrifice and effort for the last 16 or so years. But we decided we want to show the rest of the world what a pack of campaigners we are so you can be stuck on 298 or 299. We don't care. Enjoy your retirement.

have a chance against pies but not confident

Matty Boyd and Lenny Hayes are 2 players that played between 290 and 300 games. But never get to 300. Couldn’t get there because of injury. With their injuries their clubs could’ve put each on the bench to make sure they got to 300. Never happened.

Now, not saying that Murph shouldn’t get to 300, but can’t be at the expense of the team. Be great if he did. And if getting to 300 blends with team goals, even if it means with a little help at selection, fine. But it can’t be at odds with team goals. Ridiculous to think that it was cause team disharmony if team goals were placed above Murphy’s 300.

Depends a lot on the circumstances of Murphy’s injury and what happens over the next few weeks.

When a player is sub that game counts towards their match tally, regardless if they actually play part of the match. If worst comes to worst, he can be sub for three matches (and hope like hell he doesn't need to take the field if he's still injured) and then play his 300th when fit.

Great theory but it won't work, our sub is normally on the field by quarter time (love to see someone pull the stats on this).

The speculation is ridiculous Baggers will fluctuate at current position on the ladder there about, irrespective.
Marc Murphy is a club champion, great servant too throughout a decade of turmoil, for an elite player like he to have stuck it out is admirable, he’ll most definitely reach 300 games milestone.

Surely that depends on why he got stranded, no?

If he's fit in two weeks and we choose not to play him, it'll look bad.

But if his injury drags on a bit or he suffers a recurrence after playing another couple of games, then there's no reflection on the club at all. He just becomes one of many players who fell short of a milestone.

I'd also suggest that if he gets back on the park with 4-6 games left in the fixture, that he'll be expected to play to the best of his ability or face being dropped again. And if he's dropped for poor performance/intensity/effort then, once again, that's not on the club. It's on him.

Best guess is that once he's 90% right to go he'll get a game or two as the sub - can come on and play an outside roll for less than a full game if need be, or get the count up without taking the field, whatever eventuates. Reduces the chances of another injury ending his year.

Then he'd just have to get through one full game before getting the opportunity to run out for his 300th.

Sub.
Sub.
Full game
300th.
Bye.

What happens if he decides in game 299 that he doesn't want to risk another injury, and plays so poorly that he should be dropped?
He goes back to the VFL, is running out of available games to crack the 300 and doesn't want to risk injury in the VFL either... where does that leave us?
It's a slippery slope for both sides.

That leaves him on 299 through no fault of the club. He can't get to 300 without some risk of another injury, he has to run out onto the footy field at some point.

Though the challenge at selection isn't picking the players based on their last game, but on how you expect them to play in their next. Recent form is an indicator, but it's not the only one.

If Murph is poor in 299, there may well be a belief that he'll lift for 300.

Maybe the milestone itself is just flawed?

Can a 299 player be considered that differently to a 300 or 305 or 310 or 320? All should be considered as having great careers.
My personal opinion is that he would have been held in high regard (maybe even higher) had he retired last year on 287, or whatever it was, and gone out with Kreuz and Simmo.
More people would have respected him for doing the team thing and going out with something in the tank, rather than speculating whether he's best 22, being picked on merit and making a selfish choice by going on.
Can't change any of that now though. I hope he gets there, but I don't want it gifted to him and don't buy into the whole 'he's earned it' argument. I also don't want it to be at the expense of another player's development, or what's best for the team.
Other than that, I wish him well and will cheer him if he gets to 300, and/or at the end of the year when he hangs them up after falling agonisingly short.

Yeah very good point. As the experienced heads say players should retire with a little left in the tank to avoid similar predicaments that he finds himself in.

TBH I'm a p!ssed off that it's come to this.

He has been a great servant and great player, but the last couple of years he's been more greedy and entitled than anything.
He didn't take Geelong's offer. Any offer we gave him was going to be better, and he knew (like we all do) that if he went he'd be in the magoos within 1 season.

He clearly doesn't think that he deserves to play in the 2's or needs to earn his way back, and that's the club's fault.
It would be a shame if he doesn't get to 300, but if he gets gifted it through some sense of entitlement, then that's worse in my mind.
It is more important how he gets to 300 and not that he gets to 300.

The horse has bolted mate.
As soon as he was given a contract for this year it was always going to be a compromised season of double standards.
Hopefully the review identifies responsibility amongst other things in its findings and appropriate recommendations are delivered for consideration.

I really don’t get everyone’s angst about the Murphy will he/won’t 300…if he doesn’t get it this year he’ll just get it at some stage next year…all good. :p:p
