Gibbs was one of the most talented underachievers ever. I still remember him in the background spewing up after one his best ever games. I really feel like they were both just so conditional.

I always wanted Simmo, Kruze, types - but no.

Murphy and Gibbs typify the malaise of Carlton over the past two decades - they really sum it up.

Gibbs to this day is the most frustrating Carlton player I have ever seen. Had all the talent, and just never reached the heights he could have. Now he's finishing his career in SANFL.

Geelong must be thanking their lucky stars Murphy elected to stay.
We would have got decent compo and they would have got 20-30 games before permanently relegating him to the Falcons.

Murph could have left for big bucks throughout his career. Always chose to stay a blue. That loyalty should be repaid.

Disagree - we would have paid him more to stay. He could have left on smaller money and chased success but chose to stay loyal (admirable) and got rewarded financially for it.

I remember last offseason when it was said on here that we can’t get rid of all our over 30s and “experienced players” because they are needed on the list. What I have seen is besides the odd decent game by Betts and Curnow, we must have the worst crop of over 30s players in the league, who give us nothing most weeks.


Another piece of logic was that we can’t get rid of Murphy before his milestone because “what will potential targets think about Carlton treating a club champion like that?”. I think if Teague remains the coach, not dropping players when they should be dropped this year would put some of our targets off.

We rest, or 'manage' Fogarty so that we can justify including Murphy.
Has Murphy been loyal? Sure, can't deny that, although I don't know how many offers he had from rival clubs over the years or how the dollars compared to our offers.
Has he 'earned' the right to be gifted his way to 300 games? Hell no!
Some of our efforts this year (and Murphy's) show that we just can't afford to be carrying guys at a time when we are supposed to be taking the next step towards finals. If our expectation was bottom 4, or Murphy was contributing every second week towards some wins, then maybe we could carry him to 300.
What's more important for the rest of the year; getting Murphy to 300, or getting more games into fringe players and possibly getting some wins and momentum heading into next year?
For me, it's a no brainer. He's even ruined his chance of being nursed through as the sub and then played on his 300th after last week.

It's a terrible situation if he gets to 300 games. No one deserves anything, you earn it. He doesnt earn the right to play again this year based on his unwillingness to get his hands dirty and form. He should have been delisted 2 or 3 years ago. It's pathetic he is still on the list.
