Nothing worse than picking a young guy who needs developing as Sub so they most likely miss playing that week. It's perfect, you pick Murphy who is still an ok footballer, you get him to 300, you do the right thing and that means a lot to creating a club players want to play for. Players would resent Teague if he didn't. No brainer this.

Successful clubs don’t do this. No player is bigger than club. I’m
It’s far worse to send a clear signal to an entire playing list that winning isn’t driving the football department. Even more so sending a clearer message to kids who would be fitter and more able to contribute that we are prioritising sitting a guy on the bench in track pants and sneakers over success and their opportunity to contribute.
if I’m a young kid on this list coming out of contract - this would be a scenario where I’d ask myself if the club matches my ambition.
There can’t be special circumstances when it comes to the 22+1 who put the jumper on each week. I now know the next time a current member of the footy dept, coaching staff etc talk about winning driving the club, they are lying - to themselves as much as us supporters. I hope they are swiftly moved on and we see a genuine commitment to success brought in.
This is poison. successful organisations would never tolerate such compromise.
He's still good enough to be playing.
He will always have an asterisk next to his name for me.Sorry mate, but the discussion is hugely worth it.
The club have bent over backwards to do the right thing for Murphy. And rightly so, because he was one of our best footballers this century.
But HE has letdown everyone trying to help him shockingly for at least 2 years. He has been playing self preservation footy like i have NEVER seen before. At best going at half pace and at quarter intensity. It has been horrible to watch and damaging for all involved.
He both can't, and won't put in. And for at least 2 years. And the closer he's been limped to a "landmark" that shouldn't really mean much, the harder it's been to pull up his stumps. Just shocking situation he's put the club in, because he hasn't helped them to pick him at all. Not even attempted to compete. Just thinking that it's a right to get him there.
There is so much wrong with HIS approach to all this that his 300th will be completely hollow to nearly all....despite what the media department will diligently produce.
Not on last night's effort he shouldn't. He will though. Marc Murphy's 300th has become more important than winning games, despite still being a slight chance at finals. Not on last nights effort he won’t

Assume you've missed a what or this doesn't make sense. Freudian maybe. He's still good enough to be playing. The players would know he's done
Two questions:
Are you suggesting Melbourne can’t win the flag because they did the same for Jones earlier this year?
Do you consider Hawthorn a successful club?
Jones only had to play 6 games to get to his 300 and fortunately they have won all 8 games he took part in.
Carrying Murph for 14 games when the team has been struggling kind of makes it harder thing to take.
Better to play VFL than to miss games sitting the bench as Sub.
Murphy is a respected player, the players would be hoping he gets 300 and be happy for him when be does. Culture is built around respect. You don't build respect by dogging blokes like Murphy. You do it by honouring and respecting your past and present stars.
He's still good enough to be playing.
I can name plenty of players who have, so what? Right through the history of the game players have been carried to this milestone in the final stages. To be fair, I couldn't give a rats what happened with Harvey . I am comfortable with the club doing the right thing and getting Murphy over the line.
It will happen, just celebrate the contribution that he has made over the years. He's earned it IMO.
I will be happy for him
I just don’t think it’s right he takes a spot off a youngster
Sub is the ideal role

The comment was that successful clubs don't do it, full stop. There was no mention of the number of games.
And there's a very reasonable argument to be made that Jones has been carried for more than the 6 games this year. He was well past it last year too.

It's hard for me to put into words for fear of offending everyone. Therefore I'll refrain, suffice to say I am troubled and angry on multiple levels.
I would suggest setting up the wing role with players like Setterfield, Ed, Kennedy, and Cottrell is a bigger issue.Finals chance more important or Murphy getting to 300! U decide... deserves a poll me thinks
They've been holding him out of the midfield unit almost the entire time, particularly when Barker was still actively involved. The guy's losing his agility and the coach wants him to play as far wide of the stoppage as possible while also not encouraging him to make searching runs for the football?Jones only had to play 6 games to get to his 300 and fortunately they have won all 8 games he took part in.

There are other regular players for us this year that would also fall into this category, and all of them (including Murphy) have spent time outside the senior team.Do you honestly believe that? Because if you do I challenge you to name a game this year when he’s been in our best players.
Another Paul Meldrum? Worked out alright last time we did thatMay as well have pulled someone off the street as Murphy last night.
If he had a shred of dignity or team first mentality, he’d pull the pin immediately.
What is motivating the man to destroy his own legacy ?
It’s only a bloody number …
Are you suggesting Melbourne is a successful club? Because I would challenge that characterisation, very strongly. Half a season of good footy doesn’t make a club successful. If you follow NFL, you wouldn’t need me to ask you if Belichik would condone this approach.
